Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the beginning of Leg 8, teams departed from a castle in what country?

Answer: Poland

Leaving a Pit Stop at Niedzica Castle in Poland, teams were given a clue telling them to fly to the city of Tel Aviv, Israel, thousands of miles away. Once they landed, they needed to find the Israeli Towers in the city's downtown core and take an elevator to the top of the tallest building to find their next clue box.

The first flight out contained four of the teams and arrived in the city at approximately 1:15am. The second, containing a final team, landed at 3:00am. Teams were bunched up soon after.
2. In the container truck Road Block task in Leg 8 (in Israel), which team member needed to start the task over from the beginning?

Answer: Renae

After visiting Tel Aviv, teams needed to hop on a train to travel ninety-five kilometers to the city of Haifa. Once there, they found their next clue, a Road Block, waiting at the Port of Haifa. Here, one member of each team needed to be a 'driving force'.

This team member needed to operate a container truck and connect a shipping container to the rig. Then, they needed to drive the rig around a marked obstacle course and back the trailer into an appropriate spot before receiving their next clue. Jeff, Renae, Dave, Tyler, and Tom completed this task. Because Renae drove outside of her tight obstacle course, she was forced to restart the task from the beginning.
3. In Leg 8 (in Israel) teams needed to answer questions and correctly match their teammate's answers. How many questions were asked?

Answer: Five

After the Road Block, teams needed to travel to Tel Aviv by taxi in order to reach the region known as Old Jaffa. Once teams located the Hasimta Theater they found their next clue box requiring that team members split up. Each team member needed to answer a series of five questions about other teams in the race. Only when both member's answers matched would they be able to receive their next clue. These questions included:
Which team's relationship do you most envy?
Which team would be the first to lend a helping hand?
If it came down to a foursome, which team would you pair up with?
Which team has been the most strategic?
Which team is most deserving to win?
4. Only one team completed the 'Find Unseen' Detour task in Israel in Leg 8. Which team was it?

Answer: Sam and Renae

After answering their questions, teams progressed to Jerusalem Beach for a Detour task. In 'Find Unseen' (completed by Sam and Renae) teams needed to use a metal detector to search the sands for a key to open a nearby chest. The marked-off area contained many keys, only five of which would work.

In 'Make 13', the other task, teams needed to play a local game known as matkot in which they had to volley a ball back and forth using paddles (at a specific distance). Once they paddled the ball thirteen times (combined) they would receive their next clue. Matt and Tom, Jeff and Luke, Nathan and Tyler, and Dave and Kelly completed this task.
5. Which team was eliminated in Israel in Leg 8?

Answer: Dave and Kelly

After the Detour, teams were told to locate their cars in a nearby lot in order to drive to the next Pit Stop at the ruins of Masada, two hundred kilometers away in the Judean Desert. Matt and Tom were the first to arrive after a strong leg of the race.

This was their second first place win of the race. For coming in first, they won themselves a $5,000 personal computer package from Bing Lee. After a long day and several wrong turns in the desert, Dave and Kelly were eliminated from the race in the field, unable to reach the Pit Stop.

They became the seventh eliminated team.
6. In Leg 9 (in Israel), teams had to drive to the site of which of these?

Answer: The Dead Sea Scrolls' archaeological dig

In the beginning of Leg 9, teams remained at the site of the Pit Stop, Masada, and created recorded messages on memory sticks to send to their families. They were told to head up the mountain via cable car to locate King Herod's Winter Palace where they would find their next clue box.

After locating this spot nestled into the side of the mountain, they needed to return to their cars and drive one hundred kilometers north to West Bank to find the site at which the Dead Sea Scrolls were found, Qumran.
7. During the deciphering Road Block task in Israel in Leg 9, team members needed to decode a message written in what language?

Answer: Hebrew

Upon arriving in Qumran, team members were chosen for a Road Block asking 'who's not lost in translation?' For this task, the selected members needed to decipher a Hebrew scroll (reading from right to left, as is expected). Tom, Jeff, Nathan, and Sam utilized a parchment and key to solve this puzzle and were told to travel by taxi to the main post office in Jerusalem, the capital city of Israel. Once there, they needed to hand in their recorded messages to receive their next clue from the postmaster behind the counter.
8. What large item did teams need to carry during the 'Pilgrim's Trail' Detour task in Israel (in Leg 9)?

Answer: Cross

After visiting the city's post office, teams were given their Detour clues. In the first option, 'Pilgrim's Trail', teams were told to visit the Old City of Jerusalem where they would need to pick up a cross weighing 80kg and walk it through the narrow streets of the city, past the nine stations of the cross, to Via Dolorosa and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Matt and Tom, Jeff and Luke, and Tyler and Nathan competed this physical task; some of them got hopelessly lost along the way.
9. Sam and Renae completed the 'Holy Grail' Detour task in Israel in Leg 9. What did they need to deliver to an archaeologist?

Answer: A clay pot

In the 'Holy Grail' Detour task, teams needed to go to the Western Wall to locate a dig site underground. Once they found their site in the cartel tunnels, they would need to dig in the ground for a clay pot. Once they found this they needed to transport it to the adjacent ruins of the City of David, wade through an aqueduct, and deliver the object to an archaeologist to collect their next clue. Only Sam and Renae completed this task.

After the Detour, teams needed to walk along the Ramparts Walk at the Dung Gate to find the next cluebox.
10. Which team was first to arrive at the Pit Stop in Leg 9?

Answer: Matt and Tom

After finding the cluebox on the Ramparts Walk, teams were told to head to the next Pit Stop of the race atop the Aish HaTorah World Centre overlooking Jerusalem's Wailing Wall, also known as the Western Wall. Here, Matt and Tom once again placed first.

This time they won a $10,000 prize from NAB to be given after the race. All places remained the same in this leg despite setbacks and pushes ahead. Sam and Renae arrived in fourth place and, because it was a non-elimination leg, they became marked for elimination going into Leg 10.
