Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What were the names of Hershel's first and second wives?

Answer: Josephine and Annette

Beth and Maggie are Hershel's daughters. Patricia was the wife of Otis, one of Herhsel's farmhands. Six years after Maggie's birth, her mother Josephine died. Hershel eventually remarried a woman named Annette, who had a son named Shawn, and together Hershel and Annette had Beth. Shawn and Annette turned to walkers toward the start of the apocalypse.

Hershel kept them in his barn because he hoped a cure could be found and their humanity restored. Both wives appear in the show in photographs.
2. Of what ethnic background is Hershel?

Answer: Irish

In the season 2 episode "Judge, Jury, and Executioner," Hershel talks to Glenn about his Irish ethnic background. In the season 3 episode "Seed," while camping outside the prison, Hershel asks Beth to sing an Irish song. He first asks her to sing one of Irish folksinger Paddy Riley's songs, but when Maggie protests, he asks her to sing "The Parting Glass," an Irish traditional song, instead.
3. When did Hershel give up drinking?

Answer: On the day of Maggie's birth

Hershel says he spent too much time at the town bar in his alcoholic days and nearly destroyed his first marriage to Josephine in the process. But he gave up drinking on the day of Maggie's birth. He has a relapse, however, after Shane and a few others kill all the walkers he keeps in his barn, and he goes into town looking for a drink. Rick and Glenn find him at his old haunt, The Carriage Bar.
4. When Hershel makes his first appearance in "The Walking Dead," whose life does he attempt to save?

Answer: Carl's

Season 2, episode 2, "Bloodletting," Otis, who accidentally shot Carl while hunting, lead Rick to the farm. Herhsel, a former veterinarian, goes to work treating Carl but finds he needs medical supplies. He sends Shane and Otis to scavenge for supplies at a local high school.
5. When Rick's group stays at his farm, Hershel grows increasingly irritated with them and wants the group to leave. Which of the following is NOT one of the reasons?

Answer: Rick's group brings alcohol into his alcohol-free house

Daryl takes Hershel's horse to search for Sophia without first getting Hershel's permission. He's not thrilled about Maggie and Glenn's relationship. He also doesn't like that Rick took Beth's boyfriend Jimmy to search for Sophia without asking. He feels the group is taking advantage of him and his generosity in allowing them to stay on his farm.

It probably doesn't help that Shane got his farmhand Otis killed on a supply run for medicines, either. (Hershel doesn't know at this point that Shane actively murdered him.) Dale, and then Rick, confront him about he walkers in the barn, but he doesn't perceive the walkers to be a problem, and he doesn't want Rick's "help" in dealing with them.

He just wants the group off his farm.
6. What is the name of Hershel's horse in season 2?

Answer: Nervous Nelly

Daryl is thrown by Nervous Nelly when the horse is spooked by a snake. He ends up badly injured. Hershel tells him that if he had bothered to ask to borrow the horse, he could have warned Daryl that she spooked easily, thus her name of Nervous Nelly.
7. Who does Hershel convince to wrangle walkers into the barn with him?

Answer: Rick

Rick wants to prove he's willing to give up killing so that his group can stay on Hershel's farm, and so he agrees to help wrangle walkers into the barn. But in Season 2, "Pretty Much Dead Already," Shane shoots the walker Hershel is wrangling, which causes him to collapse to the ground in grief. Shane then frees the locks of the barn and, together with other members of the group, slaughters every one of the walkers inside.

After Beth's walker mother attacks her, Hershel is finally convinced that walkers are dangerous, must be killed, and can't be saved.
8. What object did Hershel pawn to pay his debts as an alcoholic? (Hint: He got it back and later gave it to Glenn.)

Answer: His pocket watch

Hershel pawned the watch to pay his drinking debts, but his first wife Josephine was later able to get it back for him. Hershel gives the watch to Glenn in the season 2 episode "Judge, Jury, and Executioner," saying, "No man is good enough for your little girl, until he is." Maggie later lays the pocket watch on Glenn's grave at the Hilltop. Watches are common symbolic theme in "The Walking Dead." Dale, too, was fond of his wrist watch, about which he gives a speech in season 1.
9. Hershel never shoots or stabs another living human being in "The Walking Dead" - only walkers.

Answer: False

In Season 2, "Triggerfinger," Rick, Glenn, and Hershel have a run-in with Tony's gang at the Carriage Bar. A shoot-out erupts between the two groups, and Herhsel ends up shooting one of Tony's gang - Sean - in the chest. Walkers then come to consume him. Hershel then attempts to save him by shooting at the walkers, but Sean is eventually overrun and consumed.
10. In season 2 of "The Walking Dead," Herhsel joins Dale in pleading for the group not to kill the captive Randall Culver.

Answer: false

Randall is a member of Tony's gang, whom Rick, Glenn, and Hershel encounter at the Carriage Bar. He was wounded in the shoot-out and brought back to the farm, where Daryl interrogates him and learns the gang is a bad one. Dale doesn't think Randall should be killed and seeks Hershel's support in the episode "Judge, Jury, and Executioner." But Hershel ignores his plea and waves him off, saying, "I don't want to know. I leave it with Rick."
11. What appendage does Hershel lose through amputation?

Answer: Lower leg

In the season 3 episode "Seed," Herhsel steps over a dead inmate, but it turns out to be a lurking walker. It awakens and bites him in the calf. Rick ties off his leg with his belt above the wound and uses a hatchet to amputate. Hershel passes out in the process. Carl runs to get medical supplies from the prison infirmary, and Carol stops the bleeding.
12. Which of the following roles does Hershel NOT serve for the group?

Answer: Supply Runner for the prison

Hershel was a veterinarian and applies those medical skills to serving as the camp's medic in the prison, treating people as needed and being especially sacrificial during the sickness that sweeps the prison. He teaches Carol medical skills and is eventually aided by new members of the camp, Dr. S and Bob Stookey.

Hershel was also a farmer and puts those skills to sue gardening. He first suggests planting seeds at the prison in season 3, and he starts a garden in the prison yard sometime between season 3 and 4. Herhsel served as the head of the prison council, which also consisted of Carol, Sasha, Glenn, and Daryl.
13. What does the Governor use to decapitate Hershel?

Answer: Michonne's katana

In "Too Far Gone," the Governor takes Michonne and Hershel hostage and brings them before the prison to have a confrontation with Rick. Rick tries to make peace, but the Governor abruptly partially decapitates Herhsel with Michonne's katana. In the eruption that follows, he hacks into Hershel until he has removed his head entirely.
14. Who kills Hershel's reanimated walker form?

Answer: Michonne

In "After," Michonne uses her katana to stab Hershel's reanimated head. Herhsel makes additional appearances in "The Walking Dead" after his death. In the season 4 episode "A," he appears in flashbacks about prison life. In the season 7 episode "The Day Will Come When You Won't Be," Herhsel appears in one of Rick's flashbacks.

In the season 9 episode "What Comes After," Rick hallucinates he is back on Hershel's farm, and Herhsel tells him he has to wake up.
15. "You step outside," Hershel says, "you risk your life. You take a drink of water, you risk your life. And nowadays you breathe, you risk your life. Every moment now you don't have a choice. The only thing you can choose is ______" what?

Answer: what you're risking it for

Hershel says these words in season 4, episode 3, "Isolation," when he is risking his life to treat others for the sickness that is spreading through the prison.

Herhsel was played by actor Scott Wilson, who passed away in October of 2018 at the age of 76.
