Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the Trill, who tried to steal the Dax symbiont from Jadzia in the "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "Invasive Procedures"?

Answer: Verad

Verad had applied to the Symbiosis Commission to be joined, however they rejected his application. Verad, assisted by a couple of Klingons boarded DS9 whilst the majority of the inhabitants had been evacuated and forced Doctor Bashir to transfer the symbiont from Jadzia to him.

2. V is for Vidiian: The Doctor developed very strong feelings for Denara Pel, a Vidiian female. What did he create for her while he worked hard to save her life?

Answer: a holographic body

("VOY": "Lifesigns") Denara Pel was a Vidiian hematologist rescued by Voyager after they detected her distress signal. The Doctor, when examining her, found she had a neural cortical stimulator embedded on the side of her head which helped to keep her brain functions working. But too much of her brain cells had already died for it to work properly and she was near brain death so he quickly transferred her synaptic brain patterns to the holobuffers and then used her DNA to construct an unblemished holobody for her.

The Doctor and Denara only had a few days to find a way to repair her neural tissue or her synaptic patterns in the pattern buffers would degrade too much. Her real body was put into status. There was a twist to this episode when it was discovered that somebody had tried to sabotage their efforts.

A touching scene was when Denara saw her unmarred holographic face for the first time in a mirror. She was moved to tears because she had lived so long with a disfigured body due to contracting the Phage at age seven.

3. V is for Vidiian: Most Vidiians suffer from a terrible disease called the Phage which destroys their bodies. What gruesome practice do the Vidiians employ to prolong their lives?

Answer: They steal the organs of healthy individuals for themselves.

The Vidiians developed a type of transporter technology which removed organs from living beings. Neelix had his lungs taken and he only survived first by The Doctor creating holographic lungs for him and then getting a lung transplant when Kes insisted on donating one of her lungs when it was found out the Vidiians had that medical knowledge ("VOY": "Phage"). Due to the extensive use of tissue and organ transplants the Viddians who suffered from the phage had a horrifically altered appearance.

4. In the "TNG" episode "Devil's Due", legend told that Ardra promised 1000 years of peace and prosperity, but the planet would have to be turned over to her at the end of that time. Which planet?

Answer: Ventax II

Ardra staked a claim over the Enterprise-D as it was in orbit of the time of her return. Picard challenged her to arbitration with Lieutenant Commander Data as the judge, asserting that she was a fraud, but could he prove it?

Question by Daddy19
5. Geordi LaForge wouldn't look the same without his prosthetic eyepiece. What did the acronym V.I.S.O.R. stand for?

Answer: Visual Instrument and Sensory Organ Replacement

Born blind, Geordi's VISOR allowed him to see into the infrared and ultraviolet ranges and beyond. According to the episode "Hero Worship", Geordi received his VISOR after his fifth birthday.

6. What was the name of the recurring "TNG" character, a treasure-hunter who had a brief romantic relationship with Picard?

Answer: Vash

As an archaeologist, Vash crossed paths with Picard, who had an amateur's interest in the subject. Unfortunately, her unscrupulous ways made their attraction for each other incompatible for a long-term relationship.

7. Doctor Julian was Salutatorian (second in his class) at Starfleet Medical. Doctor Elizbeth Lense finished ahead of him. What position did she hold?

Answer: Valedictorian

The two officers were very close at medical school. Doctor Bashir often commented that he made a mistake in his oral exam and would have been Valedictorian if he had not done so. He confused a preganglionic fiber and a postganglionic nerve (as you do!)

Question by Daddy19
8. Vorik, a Vulcan, went through the pon farr while on the USS Voyager. Which crew member did he try to force to bond with him and become his mate?

Answer: B'Elanna Torres

Torres rejected him but he grabbed her briefly touching the sides of her head trying to force a bond before she got away. Though she had gotten away from him, that brief contact was enough to start a telepathic mating bond which caused Torres to go through pon farr herself making her temper to be even more volatile. If the pon farr was not resolved it would mean death to both of them.

Many exciting and dramatic events occurred in this episode. Some noteworthy events were: B'Elanna emotionally and physically out of control; strong development in the relationship between B'Elanna and Tom Paris; Vorik challenging Tom Paris to a Vulcan traditional fight to the death over B'Elanna; and a Klingon vs. Vulcan fight. If you don't remember these events I strongly encourage you to rewatch this episode, especially if you are a fan of the Tom and B'Elanna match.

9. Which starship crew got pulled into an area of space without any matter (except what got pulled in) called "The Void"?

Answer: USS Voyager

"The Void" was a seventh-season episode of "VOY" where Janeway and the crew of Voyager had to work to survive the cutthroat 'society' that existed within the Void; other ships that had been pulled there. Eventually it is cooperation that enabled escape from the deadly region of space.

10. In the "Star Trek: Voyager" episode, "Dragon's Teeth", Voyager was forced to land on a planet following an attack by the Turei. What was the name of the species that they found in stasis underground?

Answer: Vaadwaur

Historically, the Vaadwaur were an aggressive race that conquered other worlds by using a network of passages known as 'the underspace'. In the old Talaxian language, Vaadwaur meant foolish as the race were known to be untrustworthy. Would Captain Janeway be able to leave the planet with their Vaadwaur as their allies or would their new friends turn on Voyager?
