Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Scully described Mulder having a "breakthrough" while looking at the body. What did it involve?

Answer: shoelaces

Mulder walked away from Scully and Hartwell and went to the feet of the corpse. Bending over the shoes, Mulder asked, as though he'd discovered the secret of life, "Have you noticed that this man's shoes are untied!?" When Scully asked what he was getting at, Mulder simply said, "This means something.

Sheriff, do you have an old cemetery in town off the beaten path, the creepier the better?" When Hartwell confirmed that they did, Mulder snapped his fingers at him and told him to take him there.
2. As Mulder left for the cemetery, he told Scully to do an autopsy. When she asked what she was looking for, Mulder grasped her shoulders and said what?

Answer: "I don't know."

Holding onto her shoulders, Mulder thought for a bit and then said with grave sincerity, "I don't know." Then he turned and walked out. Scully smiled sheepishly at Hartwell as he left, explaining that Mulder "does that."
3. Doing her autopsy, what did Scully find the victim had eaten before his death?

Answer: Pizza

She further noted that it had been topped with "pepperoni, green peppers, mushrooms" and realized just how hungry she had become.
4. What coin-operated service did Scully take advantage of at the hotel?

Answer: vibrating bed

Scully, exhausted from her autopsy, collapsed on the bed and inserted 50 cents into the "Magic Fingers" box, starting the bed vibrating. Unfortunately for her, just as Scully had succumbed to the simple pleasures of a vibrating mattress, Mulder burst through the door and sent her off to do another autopsy. Mulder jumped onto the bed next to Scully, driving her off with the stench of mud, and lay on the bed laughing gleefully as Scully dressed and left the room.

When she got outside, Scully saw that her pizza had just arrived, and she had to send it in to Mulder.
5. Where did Scully find Mulder when she came back to the hotel to protect him?

Answer: on the floor

When Scully realized that the killer was drugging his victims with pizza, Scully rushed back to the hotel and busted through the door to find Ronnie bend over Mulder's prone body. Scully fired and Ronnie ran out of the room, knocking Scully over on his way outside. Scully walked over to Mulder and crouched next to him, softly slapping his face to rouse him.

He opened his eyes and started singing, "Who's the black private dick who's a sex machine with all the chicks? Shaft! Can you dig it? They say this cat Shaft is a bad mother ... Shut your mouth! Talkin' 'bout Shaft." As Scully described it, Mulder was "more or less unharmed."
6. In Mulder's version of events, Scully scoffed at his suggestion that the deaths were caused by a vampire. What reason did Scully give?

Answer: "Because they don't exist."

In Mulder's memory, Scully was more disbelieving than usual, and she quickly dismissed the vampire idea. Mulder conceded, "Well ... that's ... one opinion, and I respect that. Nonetheless, I'm thinking a murder has been committed here and we can go down there and help bring a killer to justice in whatever form -- mortal or ... immortal he may take." Scully retorted quickly, "It's not that Mexican goat sucker, either." At least they agreed on that aspect of the story!
7. Mulder recounted having made an "interesting observation" that Scully "apparently didn't hear." What did that observation concern?

Answer: number of caskets

Mulder commented to the mortician, "That's a whole lot of caskets." When Mulder asked why a town with a population of 361 would need the largest in-stock selection of caskets in the state, the mortician replied, "Repeat business." When neither agent laughed, he muttered, "mortician humor" and excused himself.
8. In Mulder's version of events, what did Scully say upon seeing Sheriff Hartwell?

Answer: "Hoo, boy."

Mulder remembered Scully being overwhelmed by Hartwell, to the point of acting like a young schoolgirl.
9. What unsightly physical characteristic did Mulder claim Sheriff Hartwell had displayed?

Answer: big buck teeth

When Hartwell opened his mouth to greet the agents, he revealed grotesquely exaggerated buck teeth. Mulder made a hilarious face when he saw them, as though trying to feel for himself what it would be like to have such teeth in his own mouth. Scully, of course, didn't seem to notice, and simply basked in the man's presence.
10. At the cemetery with Hartwell, what did Mulder mention as a sign of vampiric activity?

Answer: absence of birds singing

He also mentioned "broken or shifted tombstones" and "a faint groaning coming from under the earth. The sound of manducation -- of the creature eating its own death shroud." Hartwell said he didn't hear any birds singing, but then rethought the observation, noting that it was winter so they didn't have any birds.
