'X-Files' - Season 5 Trivia Questions

1. As part of the VinylRight sales pitch, Gary told people that he wanted to put what in their hands?

From Quiz
"X-Files" - "Folie a Deux" I

Answer: crisp $100 bill

As Gary read from his computer monitor, the $100 was payment "for allowing us the privilege of introducing you to VinylRight siding, the thousand-year siding that never needs painting or maintenance." The man on the phone wasn't interested, and when Gary continued the pitch despite his protests, the man hung up.

2. What was Mulder posing as in the park?

From Quiz "X-Files" - "The Pine Bluff Variant"

Answer: jogger

Mulder went running after Jacob Haley when the arms dealer collapsed. Scully thought there was no way Haley could get away, but Mulder said he'd lost him. Scully was suspicious, so watched surveillance footage and saw that Mulder had let Haley escape.

3. What vice did Marty indulge in?

From Quiz "X-Files" - "Mind's Eye"

Answer: smoking

In her apartment, Marty lit her cigarette using the flame from the gas stove. When she was in police custody, she let Mulder strike a match for her to use as a light.

4. When the sheriff and the landlord were in Mr. Skur's house, what did the sheriff think was in the bathtub?

From Quiz "X-Files" - "Travelers"

Answer: glove

The landlord saw the bathtub, threw up, and ran downstairs. The Sheriff glanced over and said it was just a glove, but on closer examination, he saw that it was a human body, completely drained of soft tissue.

5. What did Mulder sprinkle around the cemetery?

From Quiz "X-Files" - "Bad Blood" III

Answer: sunflower seeds

When he got into the car with Hartwell, Mulder told him that "there seems to be one obscure fact which in all the stories told by the different cultures is exactly the same, and that's that vampires are really, really obsessive-compulsive. Yeah, you toss a handful of seeds at one, no matter what he's doing he's got to stop and pick it up. If he sees a knotted rope, he's got to untie it. It's in his nature. In fact, that's why I'm guessing that our victim's shoelaces were untied."

6. Scully described Mulder having a "breakthrough" while looking at the body. What did it involve?

From Quiz "X-Files" - "Bad Blood" II

Answer: shoelaces

Mulder walked away from Scully and Hartwell and went to the feet of the corpse. Bending over the shoes, Mulder asked, as though he'd discovered the secret of life, "Have you noticed that this man's shoes are untied!?" When Scully asked what he was getting at, Mulder simply said, "This means something. Sheriff, do you have an old cemetery in town off the beaten path, the creepier the better?" When Hartwell confirmed that they did, Mulder snapped his fingers at him and told him to take him there.

7. What did Scully remove from Ronnie's dead body?

From Quiz "X-Files" - "Bad Blood" I

Answer: fake teeth

Mulder tackled Ronnie to the ground and drove a stake through his chest. When Scully caught up to them, Mulder pulled back Ronnie's lip and showed Scully the kid's vampire teeth. Scully tapped the teeth and they fell down. She pulled out the fake fangs and showed them to Mulder. Realizing what he'd done, Mulder swore: "Oh, shi..."

8. Where was the shootout that killed Donald Gelman?

From Quiz "X-Files" - "Kill Switch"

Answer: Metro Diner

The virus program, seeking to impress its creator rather than just killed him, arranged to have numerous low-level criminals and the US Marshals come together in the diner. As expected, there was a huge shootout and Gelman was killed in the crossfire.

9. What kind of store was Melissa at where the other shoppers starting ripping at their own eyes?

From Quiz "X-Files" - "Chinga"

Answer: grocery

Polly clearly didn't want to be there, but Melissa got truly alarmed when the doll's eyes popped open and she spoke. Then Melissa saw the image reflected in the frozen foods case of Dave the butcher with a knife through his eye. Melissa rushed out of the store, but not in time. All the other shoppers were clawing at their eyes, bloodying themselves. Dave went to call the police, but as soon as he had done so, he was forced to stab a knife through his own eye, killing himself.

10. What tool had Bobby left outside?

From Quiz "X-Files" - "Schizogeny"

Answer: shovel

When Phil got home to find the shovel outside, he was furious and stormed upstairs, telling Bobby to go outside and "finish the job." Angry, Bobby threatened Phil with the shovel, yelling at him to get away. Then Bobby dropped the shovel and ran into the woods. Phil followed him and tripped on a root. As Bobby watched and tried to help him, Phil slowly slid into the soft mud until he was completely covered!

11. What was Robert Modell learning to do at his rehabilitation session?

From Quiz "X-Files" - "Kitsunegari"

Answer: walk

He could barely push the large plastic wheel across the room, but eventually did. The orderlies then tied him into a wheelchair to take him back to his room.

12. Who did Scully and Mulder find in the Old Man's barn?

From Quiz "X-Files" - "The Post-Modern Prometheus" III

Answer: the reporter

They went to the Old Man's home because he was the only person in the area registered to have the tablets found at the scenes of the encounters. Sure enough, they found some more tablets in the barn. Then they heard a noise in the hay loft and ordered whoever was there to come out. Through the door stepped the bird-like reporter, who told the agents that she'd seen the Great Mutato burying the old man in the barn.

13. As he dressed to leave town, Dr. Pollidori and his wife Elizabeth had an argument about their future. She wanted kids and he wanted bigger and better things. He ultimately posed the question, "What do you want: a baby or a ____ ____?"

From Quiz "X-Files" - "The Post-Modern Prometheus" II

Answer: Nobel Prize

Though like his small-town neighbors, Pollidori seemed entranced by the idea of being on "The Jerry Springer Show", he saw his scientific work as a means of getting out of the small town and into a more exciting world. His wife wanted a baby, though, and it was creating a rift between them.

14. Where were Booger, Izzy and their friend headed?

From Quiz "X-Files" - "The Post-Modern Prometheus" I

Answer: comic book convention

Shaineh Berkowitz, Izzy's mother, seemed upset at first that he was going, particularly since the car seemed so unlikely to sustain the trip. However, with an admonition to Booger to drive safely, Shaineh let the boys leave.

15. What did Sloan, the callous surveyor, say was going to be put up on the spot of one of the markers?

From Quiz "X-Files" - "Detour"

Answer: a Blockbuster

The other surveyor, Marty, was significantly more concerned for the environment, and was also ragging on Sloan to hold the marker still. Sloan, to be irritating, said, "All right, let's shoot this next one real carefully, Marty, 'cause this is where they're gonna put the Blockbuster."

16. When the cops found Mulder lying naked in the Fells Point Industrial Park, what was he saying?

From Quiz "X-Files" - "Unusual Suspects"

Answer: "They're here!"

Mulder was underneath some cardboard, naked and curled up into the fetal position, yelling, "They're here." He'd been sprayed by the Ergotimene histamine gas that Susanne Modeski had helped to develop. In small doses, of course, the gas caused anxiety paranoia in it's subject. "They're here" was also on the alien invasion booth at the convention that Mulder had seem interested in.

17. When Mulder told Scully that he'd seen the monster, she tried to attribute it to Folie A Deux. He told her it wasn't that, nor was it what else?

From Quiz "X-Files" - "Folie a Deux" II

Answer: Helsinki Syndrome

Helsinki Syndrome was what a terrorist analyst in 1988's "Die Hard" referred to mistakenly. The actual name of the condition is "Stockholm Syndrome", which is where hostages start to identify and sympathize with their captors. Mulder insisted that what he saw "was real, and there may be a way to prove it." Scully was very dubious, though, and refused to do an autopsy on Backus' body based on Gary's claims.

18. What did August Bremer ask for at the movie theater?

From Quiz "X-Files" - "The Pine Bluff Variant"

Answer: popcorn

The usherette initially went to get the popcorn from the concession counter, but Bremer complained and said he wanted it fresh. The girl reluctantly went to pop a new batch.

19. Where did the cops find Marty when they came to Paco Ordonez's hotel room?

From Quiz "X-Files" - "Mind's Eye"

Answer: shower

They entered the hotel room and found Ordonez's body on the floor of the bathroom. Then one of the cops pulled back the shower curtain, revealing Marty. She was holding a bloody sponge and the police assumed her guilt, even after realizing that she was blind.

20. What did Mulder bring Arthur Dales the second morning?

From Quiz "X-Files" - "Travelers"

Answer: coffee

Mulder was intent on getting into the apartment and brought coffee as an offering. He still had to threatened Dales with a subpoena, though, to get inside. Dales did eventually let him in and they talked about Dales' old case. Shockingly, Mulder was smoking during this scene!

21. What film character did Hartwell think was obsessive-compulsive?

From Quiz "X-Files" - "Bad Blood" III

Answer: Rain Man

After Mulder shared his thoughts about vampires being obsessive-compulsive, Hartwell chimed in, "Yeah, obsessive... Like Rain Man. It's like when that old boy dropped them matchsticks, he had to pick them all up. Same thing, right?" Mulder corrected him, saying that Rain Man had counted the matches rather than actually picking them up, but agreed that if he'd picked them up he would have been a vampire.

22. As Mulder left for the cemetery, he told Scully to do an autopsy. When she asked what she was looking for, Mulder grasped her shoulders and said what?

From Quiz "X-Files" - "Bad Blood" II

Answer: "I don't know."

Holding onto her shoulders, Mulder thought for a bit and then said with grave sincerity, "I don't know." Then he turned and walked out. Scully smiled sheepishly at Hartwell as he left, explaining that Mulder "does that."

23. What did Mulder say Gelman invented?

From Quiz "X-Files" - "Kill Switch"

Answer: internet

When Scully gave him a skeptical look, he clarified, saying "Well, he didn't quite invent it, but he's a Silicon Valley folk hero. He was writing internet software even before there was an internet." When Scully asked why she'd never heard of him, Mulder explained that "on the eve of the deal that was going to set him up as another Bill Gates he went hiking in the Sierras and said he'd think about it. Never came back."

24. What did Polly's doll say?

From Quiz "X-Files" - "Chinga"

Answer: "Let's have fun."

At various points through the episode, the doll also said, "I want to play," "don't play with matches," "don't play with knives," and "let's play with the hammer." Whenever the doll spoke, though, it was an omen of bad things to come.

25. According to Mulder, what position had Phil's body been found in?

From Quiz "X-Files" - "Schizogeny"

Answer: vertical

When Scully shared her conclusion that Phil had died when Bobby held his head under the mud for too long, Mulder reminded her that the body had been found in a "standing vertical position" and the coroner had been forced to use a "backhoe to remove the body." Mulder clearly thought that it would have been difficult for such a scrawny boy to so thoroughly embed a grown man's body in the soil without some help.

26. What did Modell talk Todd at the sports store into thinking he was holding?

From Quiz "X-Files" - "Kitsunegari"

Answer: snake

Specifically, it was a timber rattler. Modell encouraged Todd to carefully take the snake into the back room, then he called Mulder from the store phone.

27. Judging from the photo album, what sport had the Great Mutato participated?

From Quiz "X-Files" - "The Post-Modern Prometheus" III

Answer: baseball

The Reporter showed Scully and Mulder a photo album with pictures of the Great Mutato riding a horse, sitting atop a trailer, and holding a baseball bat. I guess even monsters can participate in that all-American sport!

28. What was the headline on the paper Scully bought outside JJ's Country Diner?

From Quiz "X-Files" - "The Post-Modern Prometheus" II

Answer: FBI Hunts Hometown Monster

The subtitle was "Agent Admits Stories: 'Believed to be True'". Scully realized that the line was lifted from an argument Mulder had made when they had first seen the Great Mutato out by the woods; that regardless of how ridiculous unverified rumors may be, they are "unverifiable, and therefore true in the sense that they're believed to be true."

29. What show was Shaineh Berkowitz watching when she had her "encounter?"

From Quiz "X-Files" - "The Post-Modern Prometheus" I

Answer: The Jerry Springer Show

Shaineh was watching an episode about a baby werewolf. Apparently, the wolf baby's mother Dolores had mentioned on the show a visit from Mulder, which was where Shaineh got the idea to write Mulder about her own strange experience.

30. When Agent Kinsley and Agent Stonecypher were telling Scully and Mulder about building a tower out of "ordinary office furniture," what did Agent Stonecypher say she had placed on top of the pile?

From Quiz "X-Files" - "Detour"

Answer: electric pencil sharpener

The two agents were waxing on about how great team seminars were and Agent Stonecypher recounted last year's, saying, "When I stood on Mike's shoulders and I put that electric pencil sharpener on top of the pile, we both knew, we could never have done it alone." Mulder seemed like he was developing an allergy to the car, so it was just his luck that they were stopped for the roadblock at the park trailhead!
