Mulder went running after Jacob Haley when the arms dealer collapsed. Scully thought there was no way Haley could get away, but Mulder said he'd lost him. Scully was suspicious, so watched surveillance footage and saw that Mulder had let Haley escape.

When Scully was getting too close, following Mulder to his hotel room and in his car, she was stopped on the road and escorted to an office to meet with Skinner and a CIA operative. Skinner told her that Mulder was on a "deep-cover assignment" and that only he and the US Attorney had been privy of it until that point. Apparently, the terrorist group had contacted Mulder after hearing him speak out about government conspiracies at a conference.

First the man broke the pinky finger. Then, as the interrogation continued, he twisted it to induce excruciating pain, eventually reducing Mulder to tears. Only at that point did Haley profess to believe Mulder! Mulder later referred to the tactic as a "terrorist lie detector."

Scully originally thought it would be, but tests showed no trace of it there. As Scully sat outside Mulder's hotel, she realized that the toxin had been on the money and the terrorists were hitting banks so they could duplicate it on a larger scale.

All the terrorists were wearing Halloween masks so that they couldn't be recognized, but Mulder had his fingers in a splint, so Scully was able to pick him out later on the surveillance tapes. Haley was in a werewolf mask, Bremer was in a purple demon mask, and the finger-breaking terrorist goon was in the skeleton mask.

The terrorist goon who'd broken Mulder's finger shot the teller in the side when he saw him reaching for the alarm, but didn't kill him. He told Mulder to "finish him," but Mulder was hesitant and before he could get to it, Bremer walked up behind him and pushed him aside, telling him that the weapon was "traceable." Bremer then shot the teller himself (though we can't tell if he killed him) and rushed the terrorists out of the bank.

After the double-crossing of Mulder, Haley, and Bremer was revealed, Bremer gave Haley some car keys and told him to get out of there. Then he and the goon took Mulder to a deserted area and instructed Mulder to kneel down and put his hands behind him back.

The goon prepared to shoot Mulder, but before he could, Bremer shot the goon. Then Bremer told Mulder how to get out of there and sent him on his way.

The key pouch Bremer had given Haley was sprayed with the biotoxin, so before Haley got far, he was killed. The car drifted off the road and Haley's body sat inside, the skin being corroded by the toxin.
