Mulder grabbed the roach off the underside of a table and crushed it between his fingers. The Sheriff said he'd annihilated it, and Mulder had to go to the local hospital to have the abrasions on his hand treated.

He found the cockroach on the sink basin and picked it up very carefully, so as not to crush it. As he and the Sheriff examined it, it started to wriggle, so Mulder promptly dropped it into the sink where it escaped down the drain.

When Mulder called her, Scully asked if one of the man's eyes was "bloodshot with a dilated pupil." He confirmed that it was, and Scully explained that it was a brain aneurysm, a pretty common result of straining too forcefully. I guess that makes sense; he did head for the restroom after telling Mulder he felt constipated!

She told him that she'd heard reports of roaches crawling into people's ears or nose. He repeated "nose" in horror and cringed as the idea sunk in. She then showed him her pet project and explained her theory of UFOs: that they were actually swarms of nocturnal insects passing through electrical fields.

He told Scully that he hated insects, and she tried to reassure him by saying that lots of people were afraid of insects. He corrected her that he wasn't scared of them; he hated them! He told her that when he was young, he'd been climbing a tree and thought he'd seen a leaf until he realized it was approaching him.

He described it: "I had a praying mantis epiphany and, as a result, I screamed. And not, not a girly scream but the scream of someone being confronted by some before unknown monster that had no right existing on the same planet I inhabited. Did you ever notice how a praying mantis' head resembles an alien's head? The mysteries of the natural world were revealed to me that day but instead of being astounded I was ... repulsed." Scully replied dryly, "Mulder, are you sure it wasn't a girly scream?"

When he called Scully, she originally thought he meant the man had died of anaphylactic shock, but he clarified that the man had seen the roaches and simply frightened himself to death. Then he told Scully that her theories about the other three deaths had been correct. She reminded him that she still hadn't explained the presence of the roaches and told him she would be coming up.

Answer: Ebola virus

Someone said that roaches were devouring people alive, and the man told Scully that people were spraying the Ebola virus around town. He told her that soon, "we're all gonna be bleeding from our nipples." At that point, Scully yelled for control, announcing her credentials and attempting to calm the crowd.

It worked for a moment, but then some women got into a fight over the last can of bug spray and knocked over a display of chocolates. When the chocolates spilled them onto the floor, someone yelled that they were cockroaches, resulting in ensuing panic and mass exodus from the store.

Answer: Madagascar

Mulder told Eckerle that Madagascar had roaches that hiss by blowing air through their upper thorax.

Answer: Dr. Jeff Eckerle

Eckerle was suffering from delusions and thought Mulder might be a cockroach. To protect himself, he shot at Mulder, hitting a gas pipe. Mulder ran from the plant, taking Scully out with him. They hid outside behind Mulder's car just before the plant exploded. Scully and Mulder stood up, covered in dung from the plant, and Mulder could utter just a single word: "Crap."

Answer: "His destiny."

Ivanov gave her a look of intrigued astonishment and they launched into a conversation about "Planet of the Apes" and possibilities for Ivanov's future projects.
