An Amateur Artist's Video Game Scribbles Quiz

Okay, not so much amateur as completely inept. Here is another quiz with some more video game locations. You don't necessarily need to know about video games to do well in this quiz; you just need to identify whatever it is I've drawn.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mario, the Italian plumber who stars in the long-running series of the same name (more or less) makes his home, along with his friends, in which location?

Answer: Mushroom Kingdom

The Mushroom Kingdom encompasses several different biomes, from desert to swamp to alpine mountains and ocean. Peach is the kingdom's princess but, more often than not, she is kidnapped by Bowser or his servants and taken away, causing Mario to come to her rescue by travelling through the Mushroom Kingdom.

In 'Super Mario Galaxy', Peach's castle is pulled out of the ground and taken up into space. Mario then leaves the relative safety of the Mushroom Kingdom and, indeed, the Mushroom World, and sets out across the universe to rescue Peach yet again.
2. 'Pokemon' games are set in different regions based on real-life Japanese locales. The Generation I games 'Pokemon Red', 'Pokemon Blue' and 'Pokemon Yellow' are set in which region?

Answer: Kanto

'Pokemon Red' and 'Pokemon Blue' are the first games in the 'Pokemon' series (not counting 'Pokemon Green' which was part of the original line-up with 'Red' in Japan only). Players start with one Pokemon, either Bulbasaur, Charmander or Squirtle, given to them by Professor Oak, and must work their way up to beating the Elite Four and the Champion at the Indigo Plateau, catching and training other Pokemon along the way, at which point they will be deemed the best Pokemon Trainer in the land. Kanto was given a visual makeover in the Generation III games 'Pokemon FireRed' and 'Pokemon LeafGreen', which themselves were remakes of the original two Generation I titles.
3. Link, the green-clad hero of the 'Legend of Zelda' series of video games, does battle with all manner of creatures predominantly in which land?

Answer: Hyrule

Ever since the first title in 1986, 'The Legend of Zelda' has been one of Nintendo's flagship franchises and has gained a huge audience all around the world. Much of the series takes place in the land of Hyrule, where an incarnation of the heroic Link fights an incarnation of Ganondorf for the safety of Hyrule.

In 'The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask' for the Nintendo 64, however, Link finds himself in the parallel land of Termina. In 'The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword' for Nintendo Wii, some of the game takes place above Hyrule in an aerial archipelago called Skyloft.
4. The name of which city features in the title of a 2002 'Grand Theft Auto' title, which was released after 'Grand Theft Auto III'?

Answer: Vice City

The titular Vice City is based on the American city of Miami, Florida, and is the primary setting for protagonist Tommy Vercetti's operations. Fresh out of prison, Vercetti, a hitman for the Mafia operating in Liberty City (a location featured in 'Grand Theft Auto III'), is sent to Vice City to complete a drugs deal, but a series of unfortunate events cause the transaction to go haywire. Vercetti then vows to make amends, slowly creating an empire of crime within Vice City.
5. Sure, the first level of a game is typically what players remember most. In 'Sonic the Hedgehog 2', the first level is Emerald Hill Zone. But, what is the name of the second level in this game?

Answer: Chemical Plant Zone

Set inside a toxic factory, Chemical Plant Zone features a host of hazards, including mechanoids and pools of toxic waste. This level is notorious amongst 'Sonic' fans, mainly due to its stark difficulty as the second level in the game in comparison to the previous level. Nevertheless, its popularity saw it jazzed up and reworked for 2011's 'Sonic Generations', adding a new third-person course for Modern Sonic to dash along, whilst maintaining a side-scrolling path for Classic Sonic.
6. Banjo the honey bear and Kazooie the red-crested breegull first appeared in 'Banjo-Kazooie' in 1998 on the Nintendo 64. What is the name of the usually peaceful location where they make their home?

Answer: Spiral Mountain

Spiral Mountain takes its name, rather unsurprisingly, from the spiral mountain in the centre of the area, providing access to Gruntilda's Lair which juts out from the cliffside and overlooks the mountain. When Banjo and Kazooie defeat Grunty in the first game, she topples off the very top of her lair and lands on the ground beside the mountain, trapped underneath a rock.

In 'Banjo-Tooie', Banjo's house is destroyed by a particularly nasty spell from Grunty, and her sisters drill through the side of a cliff and open up access to the rest of the Isle O' Hags, of which Spiral Mountain makes up a considerably small portion.
7. Whilst not a fictional location, the events of 'Assassin's Creed II' and 'Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood' take place in which European country?

Answer: Italy

In the 'Assassin's Creed II' trilogy, which encompasses 'Assassin's Creed II', 'Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood' and 'Assassin's Creed: Revelations', players assume the role of Ezio Auditore da Firenze, an Italian assassin from Florence. In 'Assassin's Creed II', Ezio travels across northern Italy from Florence to Venice, frequently stopping at his family's villa at Monterrigioni in between.

At the end of the game, Ezio finds himself in Rome chasing after Rodrigo Borgia. This is where 'Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood' picks up the story, with Ezio remaining in Rome for the duration of the game. Ezio's story arc is concluded in 'Assassin's Creed: Revelations', but it does not take place in Renaissance Italy.

Instead, a mature Ezio finds himself in Constantinople.
8. Do a barrel roll! The first level in 'Star Fox'/'Starwing' for the SNES is set on which planet of the Lylat System?

Answer: Corneria

Before beginning the game, players are able choose whether they wish to take the easy, intermediate or difficult path through the Lylat System to the planet Venom where the game's antagonist Andross awaits. No matter which difficulty players choose, however, the game will always begin on Corneria, a lush, verdant planet serving as the Lylat System's population hub. Corneria once again appears as the first level in 'Star Fox 64'/'Lylat Wars'.
9. In 'Mass Effect 2', Commander Shepard frequently expresses his endorsement for various stores aboard which space station?

Answer: Citadel

One of the most familiar lines from 'Mass Effect 2' is spoken by Commander Shepard during his exploration of the Citadel space station. Upon talking to a shop owner, Shepard can endorse the shop by saying, "I'm Commander Shepard, and this is my favourite store on the Citadel." This advertisement then gets played out across the Citadel.

This can only happen, however, if Shepard saves the Citadel's Council from assault. Thereafter, Shepard can receive a small discount on any goods he purchases from that shop.
10. 2011's 'The Elder Scrolls V' is set in which province of the land of Tamriel?

Answer: Skyrim

As the legendary Dovahkiin, players must utilise their innate 'shout' powers and work with the people of Skyrim to stop the dragon Alduin the World-Eater from ravaging the land. During the game, the player may join various guilds, become embroiled in a brutal civil war, form alliances with other dragons and even venture into Sovngarde itself, the fabled afterlife of the Nords of Skyrim.
