Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Created by Quantic Dream, what 2010 PS3 exclusive involved a detective named Ethan Mars and a serial killer?

Answer: Heavy Rain

"Heavy Rain" was criticized by more hardcore gamers due to the focus on video and story elements rather than game elements. Quantic Dream, the makers of "Heavy Rain", set out to make a dramatic game, though. They certainly succeeded.
"Heavy Rain" followed several characters all influenced by the Origami Killer, a serial murderer who abducted children and drowned them. The player was able to take on several roles in the game in order to solve the mystery.
Regardless of the approach to gameplay, "Heavy Rain" was a very popular game and it received critical acclaim from many gaming outlets. IGN and Gamespy awarded it 'PS3 Game of the Year'. Quantic Dream also created "Indigo prophecy" back in 2005.
2. In 2002, what Nintendo Gamecube game began on a train and included the characters Tom Nook and Mr. Resetti?

Answer: Animal Crossing

"Animal Crossing" became a major title for the Gamecube, ushering in a new wave of games for one of Nintendo's weaker consoles. Despite low console sales, "Animal Crossing" attained Player's Choice designation early on and resulted in a number of sequels on later systems. "Animal Crossing: Wild World" showed up on the DS and "Animal Crossing: City Folk" appeared on Wii many years later. Tom Nook was a character who owned the main store in Animal Crossing while Mr. Resetti was a character known for speaking quite loudly when approached (about saving and resetting, of course).

The latter made an appearance as an assist trophy in "Super Smash Bros. Brawl". "Animal Crossing" was a Nintendo version of "The Sims"...with animals. Players arrived in town on the first train, took a house, and lived their lives by partaking in activities in town in real-time.
3. Available for the Playstation 2 and Wii, what video game from Clover Studio and Capcom featured a wolf named Amaterasu?

Answer: Okami

Set in a stylized world based on Japanese watercolours, this interesting platformer placed the player in the role of Amaterasu, a wolf goddess with the power of a celestial brush at her disposal. The point of the game was to head through the land fighting demons and performing miracles for the people of Japan. "Okami" was quite popular with players and critics alike and it won many awards upon its release.
Designers at Clover Studio (who also made the "Viewtiful Joe" series) went on to form Platinum Games (known for "MadWorld" and "Bayonetta"). "Okami" was their best-received game.
4. In 1996, what PC game by Blizzard involved a protagonist setting out to kill the devil in a dark world of dungeons and hellfire?

Answer: Diablo

"Diablo" was an early hit for the team at Blizzard Entertainment. Although "Warcraft" released two years earlier on the PC, "Diablo" also received a great deal of fanfare resulting in a 2000 sequel, "Diablo II: Lord of Destruction". This would prove to be a good idea for Blizzard; "D2" became one of the most famous online games to date and solidified the importance of Battle.net in an increasingly interactive gaming world. The original "Diablo" included the characteristic dark atmosphere of the series and involved a fairly basic four-player online multiplayer. Since its release it's sold over two and a half million units and received countless awards in the gaming community.

The sequel has achieved similar fame (with more players).
5. Released in 2008, what EA Games PC title allowed players to guide a monster from the primordial soup to the space age in a single game?

Answer: Spore

"Spore", created by Will Wright of "The Sims" fame, was released in 2008 and made waves for its unique approach to the third-person God-style game in which the player created an amoeba from scratch and evolved it through stages of existence to space age creatures. Players could start in at any point in the timeline if they wanted to and customize the characters from start to finish to see the results. "Spore" sold millions in the first week alone and was well-received by critics. Unfortunately, "Spore" faced problems with copy protection and security code systems as well as backlash from the scientific community due to certain inaccuracies.
6. Nintendo DS achieved a fair bit of fame because of this particular 2006 game designed by Dr. Ryuta Kawashima. What was its name?

Answer: Brain Age

"Brain Age" was originally released in 2006 and received a great deal of popularity, especially with the burgeoning 'casual gamer' crowd. Nintendo attributed this game to their new Touch! Generations logo along with others such as "Big Brain Academy", "Elite Beat Agents", and "Crosswords DS".

The game allowed players to analyze their supposed brain age as calculated by different lateral thinking tests. More and more of these would be unlocked the more the player completed these games daily. Touch! Generations would later move to the Wii with games like "Wii Fit", "Wii Sports Resort", and "Endless Ocean". "Brain Age" sold over eighteen million copies becoming the fourth best-selling game on the handheld while its sequel sold over fourteen million (coming sixth).
7. Released on the Xbox 360 and PS3 in 2011, what Atlus-made video game involved a puzzling dream world, a bar known as the Stray Sheep, and questions about fidelity?

Answer: Catherine

Cited as an 'adult thriller' before its release, "Catherine" was an unsurprisingly difficult game from Atlus (known for being a bit relentless already with the "Shin Megami Tensei" series). The game was supposedly so difficult that Atlus announced a mode to precede Easy Mode.
The game followed Vincent, a man already in a relationship with a girl named Katherine. When a new 'Catherine' entered his life, things went a bit topsy-turvy. His nightmares started to become horrible puzzle towers, he started questioning his relationships, and his life was in danger.
"Catherine" was the first game to be developed and distributed by Atlus although they'd been a major name in video gaming for ages.
8. Found on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, what 2008 game involved a craft known as the USG Ishimura and the Necromorphs therein?

Answer: Dead Space

Developed by EA's Redwood Studios (also known as Visceral Games), who also created "Dante's Inferno", "Dead Space" was an extremely well-received "Alien"-inspired title involving frightening alien creatures in space. The game was an atmospheric delight creating a genuinely creepy game where no one could hear you scream.

The player took on the role of Isaac Clarke as he tried to escape the horrors on the USG Ishimura, a space mining craft, while searching for his girlfriend. "Dead Space" was followed by a much-anticipated sequel in 2011. Both games were critically lauded, commercially successful award winners.
9. What 1995 game for the Super Nintendo (SNES) featured a final boss battle against Giygas?

Answer: Earthbound

The second game in the "Mother" trilogy, "Earthbound" was a popular RPG for the SNES which was notoriously lengthy and exceptionally 'out-there'. You played as Ness, a boy with special powers, and along for the trip were Paula, Jeff, and Poo. As the group made their way through numerically-ordered cities like Onett, Twoson, Threed, etc. they encountered cults, circus zombies and a mirror world containing an evil statue.

In the end of the game, the player faced off against Giygas to prevent him from gaining power over everything. Lavos was the final boss of "Chrono Trigger", Smithy was at the end of "Super Mario RPG', and "Quest 64", for the Nintendo 64, ended with a battle against Mammon.
10. Released on the Wii in 2009, what video game from Majesco featured a creature with a fondness for jellybeans?

Answer: A Boy and His Blob

"A Boy and His Blob" followed the story of a young boy who awoke one evening to find a blob from the planet Blobolonia in his backyard. This white blob would become his close friend and the two of them would band together to fight the evil dark blobs and their emperor to save both of their worlds. Using jellybeans, Boy could make Blob shift into any given shape at will from ladders to parachutes to cannons and balloons.

Although the Wii version was released in 2009, an original version, "A Boy and His Blob: Trouble on Blobolonia", was released on the NES in 1989
