Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the DOS game "Alien Carnage" originally called? (Hint: The main character of "Alien Carnage" still has this name.)

Answer: Halloween Harry

"Alien Carnage" originally went by the name "Halloween Harry" - the name of the game's protagonist. Like many other games of the DOS era, "Alien Carnage" had its first episode released as shareware, while the remaining three were to be purchased from Apogee. "Alien Carnage" was originally released under the name "Halloween Harry" for its first two version releases, then after version 1.2, Apogee suggested that it be renamed, so as to avoid confusion with the fact that it may be a Halloween themed game.
2. What DOS pinball game featured tables such as "Android", "Enigma", and "Toy Factory"?

Answer: Epic Pinball

"Epic Pinball", named after the company that published it - Epic MegaGames (which was later known as Epic Games), was a DOS pinball game that featured twelve tables, distributed between three floppy disks. There was also a bonus table, "African Safari", that was available on the CD-ROM edition, also called the "Full Edition".
3. In "Hugo's House of Horrors" for DOS, who is Hugo trying to save from the clutches of the haunted house?

Answer: Penelope

The "Hugo" series has a total of four games in its canon. The first being "Hugo's House of Horrors," the second being "Hugo II, Whodunit?" - which is a murder mystery style game, "Hugo III, Jungle of Doom!" which is very reminiscent of "Indiana Jones" in theme, and the fourth, and supposedly final installment, was "Nitemare 3D" - a "Wolfenstein 3D" clone that had Hugo entering the mansion to save Penelope by blasting baddies with different guns.
4. Which of these games had an SNES port as well as a SegaCD port, that was set in a fantasy world featuring a female bounty hunter as the protagonist?

Answer: Popful Mail

"Popful Mail" tells the story of Mail trying to catch her most elusive bounty "Nuts Cracker" (clever name, I know.) The game is an action platformer with RPG elements, such as leveling up, gaining experience points from enemies, and being able to hold multiple items/weapons. One of the most important, and most lauded features of the game, was the ability to save your game almost anywhere, with the exception of dialogues and cutscenes.
5. What are the names of the two playable characters in "Contra" for the NES?

Answer: Bill and Lance

Bill and Lance have been present for "Contra" and "Super C" for the NES, but in "Contra III: The Alien Wars" - it's set in the future, so their descendants Jimbo and Sully take over to fight the evil Red Falcon. Bill is brought back from a cryogenic state in "Contra: Shattered Soldier," and poor Lance was left to freeze in place of a sultry female protagonist named Lucia, who is a cybernetic soldier that was originally planned to be built by none other than Dr. Mandrake from "Contra: Hard Corps".
6. Which of these games for the PS1 was a pseudo-3D (2.5D) side scrolling platformer focusing on "Missions" that featured cute styled characters and enemies in a fantasy world?

Answer: Tomba!

"Tomba!" featured a spiky pink haired boy, the title's namesake. It was developed by WhoopeeCamp who made "Tomba!" and "Tomba 2!," then went out of business afterwards, despite well received reviews. The mission style gameplay of "Tomba!" is reminiscent of "Chapter" style gameplay, where after completing a certain objective, you'll receive a new objective and have to perform another series of actions and visit new areas and new characters.
7. What game is the 1986 spiritual predecessor to "Double Dragon"?

Answer: Renegade

"Renegade" was a 1986 arcade game released by Taito. "Renegade" is simply a localized version of a Japanese game that roughly translates to "Hot-Blooded Tough Guy Kunio." It was known for revolutionizing the beat-em-up genre by incorporating many staples we're used to, such as four-way movement, enemies with health, and punch-jump-kick style controls. "Double Dragon" was the spiritual and technological successor to this game.
8. What popular series of video games was "Battletoads" made to rival?

Answer: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Like the TMNT beat-em-ups, "Battletoads" features anthropomorphic animals - in this case, toads. The exaggerated fists and feet of the playable characters as well as the extremely high level of difficulty set "Battletoads" apart from the rest of the competition. "Battletoads" has infamously been known for its difficulty ever since.
9. "Demon's Crest" is the sequel to what game?

Answer: Gargoyle's Quest II: The Demon Darkness

"Demon's Crest" is the third game in the series, and was made for the SNES. The game features a main character named Firebrand who is a demon searching for all of the crests (Earth, Time, Water, Air, and Heaven.) Each of these crests allows Firebrand to don a new form and take on new abilities. Strangely, "Demon's Crest" doesn't have a credits listing, and therefore it is unknown who actually composed the game's universally lauded soundtrack.
10. What weapon is not available in the id Software masterpiece, "DooM?"

Answer: Super Shotgun

The Super Shotgun, or "SSG" for short, is one of the most powerful non-plasma and non-explosive weapons in "Doom 2", as it fires twenty bullets at once, from two shells. "Doom 1" did not feature this weapon, as it had the standard array of weapons: Fist, Pistol, Shotgun, Chaingun, Rocket Launcher, Plasma Rifle, and BFG 9000.
11. Which of these games was generally forgotten due to "Doom's" presence on the market, as it is a "Wolfenstein 3D" engine based game? (Hint: This game was developed by Capstone Software and was released in 1994.)

Answer: Corridor 7: Alien Invasion

While "Corridor 8: Galactic Wars" was planned, it was cancelled, most likely due to the fact that "Corridor 7" had such poor sales. This was because the game was released right around the time that "DooM" had first hit the market, which has widely been regarded as one of the best, if not arguably, the best first person shooter to date.

The source code for "Corridor 7" has been released for the mod community to do with it what they please.
12. What other platform did the PS1 smash survival horror hit "Resident Evil" get ported to?

Answer: Sega Saturn

While it's not uncommon for PS1 games to have Windows ports (like "Twisted Metal 2"), "Resident Evil" saw itself initially on the PS1 and Sega Saturn. The Dreamcast would have been too far along in the console chronology to have featured what would have been at that time, a dated game. "Resident Evil 2" saw a port to the Nintendo 64. All three of the first "Resident Evil" games were released on Windows, but did not run on DOS.
13. What is the name of the main character from "Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest"?

Answer: Benjamin

"Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest" wasn't very well received by many RPG fans, as it features a heavily simplified version of the gameplay mechanics most RPG players are used to. The player could only have one other person in their party, and by default, these characters are automatically controlled, meaning they would attack and use spells or healing on a situational basis.

This could prove frustrating to RPG players who are accustomed to the normal command menu and "Wait" battle system in most other RPGs of the era.
14. Which of these games, based on a Manga, features a character who goes by the pseudonym "Duke Togo"?

Answer: Golgo 13: Top Secret Episode

"Golgo 13" is the longest running Manga that is still in production, and has yielded a total of six video games to its namesake. "Golgo 13" - the titular character, goes by the before pseudonym. "Golgo 13" was developed by Vic Tokai, the developer known for titles such as "Decap Attack" and "Clash at Demonhead".
15. Which game had an expansion released for the Nintendo 64 Disk Drive that granted the player a "Car Editor" on top of a completely remade soundtrack in stereo?

Answer: F-Zero X

The Nintendo 64 Disk Drive was a complete commercial failure. It was slated for release in the United States, but never made it and therefore only resides in Japan. The Expansion pack, aptly named "F-Zero X Expansion Kit" was released in April of 2000.

The car editor allowed players to use pre-made parts to make a custom vehicle, making sure to balance the stats and name it. It also features a track editor, so players can make their own courses to race on.
