The Nintendo 64 is named for its 64-bit processing unit, while the earlier Super Nintendo Entertainment System had only 16. The PlayStation 2, meanwhile, used two 64-bit units in its 'Emotion Engine'. Bits ceased to be an accurate measure of a console's power after the Nintendo 64 era.

"Halo: Combat Evolved" was the first game in the original "Halo" trilogy, developed by Bungie Studios and published by Microsoft. An enhanced remake, "Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary", was published ten years later for the Xbox 360. The game is the first appearance of the now iconic character Master Chief, as he battles against the alien Covenant.

First introduced in "Donkey Kong Country" (1994), King K. Rool is the villainous leader of the Kremlings. One trademark feature of battles against the character is that he often falls to the ground, as if defeated, before later jumping up to resume the fight (sometimes after a faux credits sequence). King K. Rool appeared in all subsequent "Donkey Kong" games, until "Donkey Kong Country Returns" introduced the Tikis, acting as villains in place of the Kremlings.

While Bowser appeared in the GameCube sequel, "Super Smash Bros: Melee", he was absent for the first encounter, which featured only twelve playable characters: Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Link, Fox McCloud, Captain Falcon, Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Ness and Samus.

The game was originally a small budget title with a Japanese only release, but its success led to it being released globally and the sequel became the best-selling game on the GameCube.

Squall's design was inspired by actor River Phoenix, and the fur lining on his collar was included as something of a challenge to the game's full motion video designers. If the player hits R1 at the point the sword impacts upon an enemy, the gun is fired and additional damage is dealt.

The Kikwis of "The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword" might look vaguely penguin like, but they're just flower-like creatures. In "Super Mario 64" you race against a penguin (and later help it reunite with its chick), in "Endless Ocean" you can find penguins on your boat 'The Gabbino', and in "Kirby's Dream Land" the penguin King Dedede is the primary antagonist.

The legendary birds include Articuno (uno), Zapdos (dos) and Moltres (tres). They appear in several "Pokemon" games, including the initial titles "Pokémon: Red" and "Pokémon: Blue". Players only have one chance to capture each of them in these original titles, although it's always possible to turn the game off without saving and then return to the same area!

"Resident Evil 6"'s four campaigns are weaved together throughout the game, which received fairly negative reviews despite the amount of content it offered. Many players see the title as continuing the franchise's shift into action game territory, leaving besides its horror roots. Nonetheless, the game sold well (although less than anticipated), and "Resident Evil 7" was announced shortly afterwards.

"The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past" was a title on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, "The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask" was released for the Nintendo 64 and "The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess" appeared on the Wii and Gamecube. "Illusion of Gaia" (or "Illusion of Time", in Europe) is another Super Nintendo Entertainment System action-adventure title, similar to "Zelda" in its gameplay.
