Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Betsy- "The day I died started out bad and ___________."

Answer: got worse in a hurry

This is the very first line in the book. Betsy died in April, on her 30th birthday. She was late for work that day, fired due to cut-backs, and killed in a car on pedestrian accident. Fortunately for her, she'd been attacked a couple months earlier by the Fiends.
2. Which American state does Elizabeth 'Betsy' Taylor live in?

Answer: Minnesota

Betsy hates her name, Elizabeth Taylor. She loves fashion, especially expensive shoes, and talks about her home city of Minneapolis. She takes the bus to work, or she did before her death, and shops at the Mall of America.
3. What is the name of Betsy's cat?

Answer: Giselle

Giselle was an adoptee from the local animal shelter. She tended to wander away from home on a regular basis, and was actually the reason for Betsy to be hit by the car on the night she died. She went outside after Giselle and a Pontiac Aztek skid on the icy road. Betsy's last sight before dying was of Giselle on the front porch waiting to be let in.
4. Betsy died on her birthday. What age was she forever destined to be?

Answer: 30

It was April, and her thirtieth birthday. She not only got fired on her own milestone birthday, but she died as well. She'd planned a party for that night, but a "freak April snowstorm" caused her to have to postpone it. It was just as well, since her father and "stepmonster" Antonia cancelled on her via answering machine message.
5. Betsy met Detective Nick Berry after she was attacked outside of this local eatery.

Answer: Khan's Mongolian Barbecue

This was where the Fiends first found Betsy. She described her attackers as clawing and biting at her, but doing no real damage. We find out later in the book that she's full of garlic, which clots blood, so they lost interest in her quickly. Nick was the first man Betsy fed off of after she awakened as a vampire. He became sickeningly obsessed with her because of her special seductive powers, and Eric, Dennis and Tina had to help return him to normal.
6. Which of the following is NOT one of Betsy's attempts to re-kill herself after her initial death?

Answer: impaling herself on a lightning rod

She spent about a half hour on the bottom of the river, but discovered she had no need to breath. Then she tried to electrocute herself on a power line, drank the bottle of bleach, stabbed herself with the Wal-Mart knife, and finally traded herself with would be rapists on the street.

She saw a woman with a young child, Justine, on the street being threatened by two big men. She intervened, and saved the duo.
7. Betsy came to believe she was a zombie. Who was it that explained to her she was a vampire?

Answer: a little girl named Justine

After having rescued Justine and her mother, Betsy's fangs showed up for the first time. She told Justine she was a zombie, but was corrected by the youngster. Justine pointed to her fangs and said she was a vampire, not a zombie.
Betsy did try to find a priest, but had no luck. She entered a Presbyterian church and entranced a janitor and a minister, but found no priest.
Nostro (short for Nostrodamus) labeled her an acolyte and a supplicant, and eventually labeled her as an enemy.
8. Who is Betsy's rich best friend?

Answer: Jessica Watkins

She described Jessica as looking like an Egyptian queen. Jessica had inherited her father's fortune at age 14 after her parents died. She was so happy that Betsy was undead; Jessica bought her a house and car to ease some of the money worries. In the second novel she bought a fancy house for them all to live in after Betsy's home is found to be infested with termites. All three incorrect choices are characters from the Showtime series "The L Word".
9. It was foretold that Betsy would be Queen of the Vampires. Who turned out to her king?

Answer: Eric Sinclair

Nostro, or Noseo as Betsy called him, reigned terror over vampires for hundreds of years. He hated Betsy and wanted her dead; though he was the reason she was created to begin with. He created the Fiends, they attacked Betsy, and she rose as the vampire queen.

She was different from all other vampires, as was also foretold. She did not have to feed often, she was not allergic to any holy artifacts, and sun posed no threat to her at all. Eric Sinclair was tall, dark, and handsome. He had black hair and eyes, broad shoulders, and a wary truce with old Noseo.

After the Fiends devoured Nostro, he and Betsy consummated their short relationship. This brought his own destiny, as King of the Vampires, to light.
10. What was Betsy's first solid meal after becoming a vampire?

Answer: pork loin and risotto

Betsy's mother Elise made this dish for her vampire daughter. Betsy soon discovered the sad truth that she could no longer eat solid foods. She tossed all of the meal back up, and mourned the loss of food. She did find out that beverages were no problem at all, but they did not satisfy her as they once had.
11. When Betsy first found Marc he was contemplating suicide.

Answer: True

She spotted him six stories above her ground position and scaled the building to get to him. He was ready to jump and explained to her he was tired of his life. They made a deal. She'd feed off of him, which he wanted, if he agreed to skip the suicide mission.

After she fed, he felt completely rejuvenated and ready to live his life. He admitted to her that he was gay, which explained why she couldn't make him do her bidding, and he soon decided to move into her house.
12. Who sired Eric Sinclair?

Answer: Tina

Tina found Eric in a graveyard mourning the death of his parents. She sired him and they'd been friends every since. She told Betsy she been born, as a human, during the time of the Civil War. Eric stated that his human life began the same year as World War II. Nostro sired Dennis, which Betsy learned the hard way toward the end of the book.
13. What item, belonging to his sister, did Eric give to Betsy?

Answer: cross necklace

Betsy was the only vampire that could bear the cross. He had Tina take it to Betsy after he was sure she was their new queen. Tina arrived in time to help Betsy live through her second encounter with the Fiends. The two were in a deep pit inside Nostro's basement. Betsy took the necklace and wore it around her neck in this book and books to come.
14. Who turned out to be the traitor, taking Betsy to Nostro at the end of the book?

Answer: Dennis

Dennis had been asked by his sire, Nostro, to take up residence inside Eric's home. He'd been there as a spy for many years. He did not initially see Betsy as a threat, but finally realized she would be after she decided to kill Nostro. Betsy avenged her kidnapping by killing Dennis.
15. Who killed Nostro?

Answer: the Fiends

Betsy felt sorry for the Fiends when she learned how they came to be. She found out that they were newbie vampires that hadn't been allowed to feed. This caused them to go insane and become monstrous looking. She set them free, and they followed her. Then, she set them loose on their tormentor, Nostro. They promptly ate him.
