Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We were introduced to a new character in the early pages of the book. What was the name of Jessica's pilot?

Answer: Cooper

Cooper had been with Jessica, and her parents before her, for many years. Betsy described him as an attractive older man with a potent Irish accent. Before the trip to Cape Cod, Jessica had sent a detailed memorandum about Betsy for Cooper to read. She cited many unattractive character quirks that Betsy took issue with, but none of the vampiric considerations slowed Cooper down.

He did seem a bit hurt that Jessica hadn't revealed the news three years earlier, when it had all first occurred.
2. Which Wyndham werewolf expressed deep grief after viewing Antonia's body?

Answer: Derik

When Eric, Betsy and Jessica arrived at Logan airport they were met by three members of the Wyndham pack. Michael, the pack leader, was there with his wife Jeannie and Derik accompanied them. Antonia had once told Betsy that Derik was her only true friend within the pack, and he demonstrated this fact with an overwhelming display of grief. Derik was normally a very happy wolf and Betsy had never seen him in such a state.

He was offended by the condition of Antonia's body, but no one had wanted to touch her until they knew what was allowed.
3. According to Betsy, the Wyndhams lived in this type of dwelling.

Answer: Castle

Betsy's own home, a mansion on Summit Ave., was quite impressive itself. When they arrived at the Wyndham home, Betsy was taken slightly aback at the gorgeous red brick and stone castle before her. It was on a field of green with the Atlantic Ocean as a backdrop. Everyone was impressed with the home. Betsy confirmed that it was the first time she realized that something could actually smell gorgeous as well as appear that way. In case anyone was wondering what a saltbox house is, it is a dual storied wood frame home once popular in New England.

It has a roof that slopes downward to create both a two storey section (in the front) and a one storey section (in the rear).
4. In an extremely refreshing change of pace, MaryJanice offered readers the viewpoint of another one of the main characters. Which main character was writing to their future self in diary format?

Answer: Marc

We had read others' viewpoints in books before, but they were not from our beloved main characters. Marc had decided to keep a diary for his future self. In the first installment he revealed that he kept diaries before, as many people before him, and then discarded them soon afterward. Like he'd said, he stopped his writing on life and gotten back to the business of living it. Also in that first installment, he revealed he'd been sexually attracted to one woman, Betsy, because she'd unintentionally worked her mojo on him.

In the second entry he talked about Tina and her love of Zyr vodka, her immense creepiness that no one else seem to notice, and her lack of respect for his existence. She didn't ignore him maliciously, but held her service for her king and queen.

He just didn't understand why she couldn't be bothered to grab a gallon of milk when she shopped for the lot of liquids she brought home. We learned more about his opinion of Laura in segment three, and about the time he tried to read the "Book of the Dead" and vomited blood before he could read page one.
5. What happened after Betsy escorted Lara to the playground?

Answer: Lara taught a bully a lesson

Jeannie warned Betsy about the fact that Lara was not a human child. She explained that a wolf cub was stronger, faster and crueler. Betsy, in true fashion, paid little heed to Jeannie's warning. I am sure she thought that as a super strong vampire herself she could handle whatever came their way. Well, a young boy, about ten years old, began bullying his little sister, about five years old.

His mother catered to him, and asked that he stop doing it. This infuriated Betsy, because the woman wouldn't parent her child. Finally, Lara had enough of his behavior and hoisted him into the air above her head.

She made it clear to him that his job as older brother was to look out for a little sister and not torment her. This act finally inspired the whiny mother off her butt in an attempt to "save" her bully son. Betsy tried to coax Lara into letting the boy down, but she had to stop and mojo the woman back to her seat. Finally, Lara tossed the older boy about six feet, face first.

Then, she went to his little sister and comforted her.

She admitted to Betsy on their way back to the castle that the entire situation was of Lara's own making. She had wanted to size up a potential enemy in Betsy, and that now she had the answers she needed.
6. Marc was the person who told Laura to use her "followers" to her own end. Did this advice send Laura over the bend (make her lose her mind)?

Answer: Yes

Ah, I could practically hear the clock ticking on Laura's sanity in the previous novel. Though he had no intention of making it happen, Marc was the catalyst in Laura's mental decay. She was tired and embarrassed about her Antichrist followers. So, Marc suggested she send them out to "test their loyalty" on church runs, food banks, etc.

She was excited and relieved, but unfortunately it was too late. She quickly lost her mind and decided she knew what was best for her sister. She organized murders, took Tina, and cut off the entire cellphone account for the Summit Ave. crew. Betsy later found out that it was Satan whispering in Marc's ear that led to his ideas. Poor Marc!
7. Derik had always had an ambiguous aversion to BabyJon, but which Pack member kept forgetting he existed?

Answer: Michael

During the meeting where Michael explained about a mandatory Council meeting, Derik paced the floor like a madman. He unconsciously avoided BabyJon no matter how many times Betsy nudged the car seat into a new location. Michael didn't even seem to see the baby at all. Later, the gang discovered that Michael could see the baby, but immediately forgot his existence when he stopped looking at BabyJon.

The consensus was that he couldn't view BabyJon as a threat (we learn why later in the book), so he would immediately forget about him the moment he looked away. Derik wasn't Pack leader, so that did not happen to him.

He just knew when he looked at the baby that something indeterminable was wrong with him.
8. At the funeral, Betsy chewed out the entire lot of Pack that was present. What did she get as a "reward" for her indiscriminate words?

Answer: a piece of wood through her heart

On werewolf in particular, Cain, was giving Betsy a hard time about allowing Antonia to die under her watch. Betsy had had enough of all their bogus judgments and told them all how the "cow ate the cabbage"! She made it clear that it was their fault she died.

They'd shunned her telepathic powers and hated her lack of ability to wolf out. Derik felt more pain, as he HAD been her friend and didn't make her feel welcome enough to stay. For her impatient efforts to show them all the light, Betsy received a chair leg through the chest.
9. Betsy encountered a ghost out on the beach near the Pack castle. Whose mother was this ghost?

Answer: Michael's

The woman was wearing a 1960's style outfit and cat's-eye glasses. She wanted Betsy to ask her son to NOT name his daughter after her as he'd planned. Her name was Theodocia and she did not want another girl saddled with that name. Betsy told a stunned Michael this news just as they were leaving to save the world from Laura, the Antichrist.

I am sure this was an homage to the 1988 movie "For Keeps" starring Molly Ringwald and Randall Batinkoff. In the film, Darcy wouldn't think of name for her newborn daughter and that left Stan to make the decision. So, he named their baby Theodosia after his paternal grandmother.
10. Which choice did NOT happen in this novel?

Answer: Laura had Tina killed for Betsy's own good

Betsy met Derik's wife Sara at the funeral. Sara was very warm and inviting, which relaxed Betsy somewhat. Sara was extremely pregnant and enjoyed visiting with BabyJon after the service. After Betsy cried on Derik's wolfie shoulder, he forgave all his anger toward her and made sure the Council did as well. It was closer to the end when everyone discovered that BabyJon's secret power was that he couldn't be harmed by supernatural creatures. He was invulnerable to their attacks. Derik was wigged out by it, Michael was rendered incapable of remembering him, and a newly changed young wolf bit him and left no marks. The vampires tried to bite him too, Sinclair specifically, and this caused Betsy to involuntarily attack him and save BabyJon. BabyJon had a built in supernatural force field, though not in a literal sense. If she had killed Tina, Laura wouldn't have made it through the post-Cape Cod "family reunion". She had Tina boxed inside a coffin for days, and stored in her apartment. Sinclair and Garrett had gone through the same thing, only for a longer period of time, when held in the evil clutches of Marjorie the Evil Librarian. Yes, that title does need to be capitalized. It holds the same tone and significance of the capitalized Pack and Council.

So, another chapter came to a close in the life of our vampire queen. I was sure while reading the diary entries that either Marc or Tina was a goner. But, they survived to die another day. . .
