Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Use some of the letters in CHRONICLES to fill in the missing word from 1 Samuel 17:51, in the NIV Bible: "David ran and stood over him. He took hold of the Philistine's sword and drew it from the sheath. After he killed him, he cut off his head with the sword. When the Philistines saw that their ____ was dead, they turned and ran."

Answer: hero

The correct word is 'hero'. The story of Goliath, the Philistine hero, is told in the 17th chapter of 1 Samuel. Scripture reports he was from Gath.

1 Samuel 17:4-7 in the NIV Bible says he was a giant of a man and I have included additional information about him in between the brackets: "His height was six cubits and a span. [That is, about 9 feet 9 inches or about 3 meters.] He had a bronze helmet on his head and wore a coat of scale armor of bronze weighing five thousand shekels [That is, about 125 pounds or about 58 kilograms.]; on his legs he wore bronze greaves, and a bronze javelin was slung on his back. His spear shaft was like a weaver's rod, and its iron point weighed six hundred shekels. [That is, about 15 pounds or about 6.9 kilograms] His shield bearer went ahead of him."

Scripture states David chose five smooth stones from a stream for his slingshot prior to his battle with Goliath, However, it appears David needed only one stone to achieve victory. 1 Samuel 17:49, in the NIV Bible states: "Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell face down on the ground."

David would eventually go on to become king of Israel and usher in a golden age for the nation. He was replaced as king by his son Solomon, whose mother was Bathsheba.
2. Unscramble the letters in CHRONICLES to fill in the missing word from Ephesians 1:7-8 in NKJV Bible: "In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the ______ of His grace which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence."

Answer: riches

The correct word is 'riches'. Ephesians was written by Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, and the book was addressed to believers in the early church at Ephesus, a community in present-day Turkey.

In regards to the words 'His blood' in the passage, notes in the New King James Study Bible have this to say: "The blood of Christ is the means by which our redemption comes. The Old Testament and the New both clearly teach there is no forgiveness without the shedding of blood."
3. Unscramble the letters in CHRONICLES to fill in the missing word from Isaiah 40:22 in the NKJV Bible: "It is He who sits above the _____ of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers, who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in."

Answer: circle

'Circle' is the missing word. Some people suggest this verse, which talks about God sitting above the "circle of the earth", clearly shows the world was round, and not flat, as was the common belief for centuries and centuries. However, notes in both the New King James Study Bible and the New International Version Study Bible suggest the word 'circle' refers to the horizon, or hemisphere over the earth.
4. Unscramble the letters in CHRONICLES to fill in the missing word from 1 Peter 3:18 in the NKJV Bible: "For Christ also suffered ____ for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit."

Answer: once

The correct word is 'once'. Simon Peter, one of the original Twelve Disciples, is credited with writing 1 Peter and 2 Peter.

Notes in the NKJV Study Bible have this to say about the passage and its relationship to Christians: "Christ's death on the cross was a once-for-all event. He died once for our sins. He does not have to be 'recrucified' each time we sin."

Notes go on to suggest Christ died "so that we can be reconciled to God".
5. Unscramble the letters in CHRONICLES to fill in the missing word from Psalm 72:12 in the NKJV Bible: "For He will deliver the needy when he _____, the poor also, and him who has no helper."

Answer: cries

The missing word is 'cries'. Although David is credited with writing many of the Psalms, the 72nd Psalm is believed to have been written by Solomon, the son of David. Solomon is also credited with writing Psalm 127.
6. Unscramble the letters in CHRONICLES to fill in the missing word from Song of Solomon 7:4 in the NIV Bible: "Your neck is like an ivory tower. Your eyes are the pools of Heshbon by the gate of Bath Rabbim. Your ____ is like the tower of Lebanon looking toward Damascus."

Answer: nose

It's difficult to understand a nose that is likened to a tower as being a sign of beauty, but such was the case for Solomon when he wrote the Song of Solomon.

In the seventh chapter, Solomon tells of the beauty of his bride.

Verses 5-9, in the NKJV Bible go on to state:
"Thine head upon thee is like Carmel, and the hair of thine head like purple; the king is held in the galleries.
How fair and how pleasant art thou, O love, for delights!
This thy stature is like to a palm tree, and thy breasts to clusters of grapes.
I said, I will go up to the palm tree, I will take hold of the boughs thereof: now also thy breasts shall be as clusters of the vine, and the smell of thy nose like apples;
And the roof of thy mouth like the best wine for my beloved, that goeth down sweetly, causing the lips of those that are asleep to speak."
7. Unscramble the letters in CHRONICLES to fill in the missing word from Exodus 8:16 in the NKJV Bible: "So the LORD said to Moses, 'Say to Aaron, 'Stretch out your rod, and strike the dust of the land, so that it may become ____ throughout all the land of Egypt'."

Answer: lice

The missing word is 'lice'. The incident involving lice was one of the ten plagues inflicted upon the Egyptians as the Pharaoh refused to grant permission to the Israelites to leave the country for Canaan. Only after the tenth plague did the Pharaoh grant permission to the Israelites to leave.
8. Unscramble the letters in CHRONICLES to fill in the missing word from Leviticus 26:19 in the NIV Bible: "I will break down your stubborn pride and make the sky above you like ____ and the ground beneath you like bronze."

Answer: iron

The missing word is 'iron'.

To put the Scripture into context, here's how Leviticus 26:18-21, reads in the NKJV:
"And if ye will not yet for all this hearken unto me, then I will punish you seven times more for your sins.
And I will break the pride of your power; and I will make your heaven as iron, and your earth as brass:
And your strength shall be spent in vain: for your land shall not yield her increase, neither shall the trees of the land yield their fruits.
And if ye walk contrary unto me, and will not hearken unto me; I will bring seven times more plagues upon you according to your sins."
9. Unscramble the letters in CHRONICLES to fill in the missing word from Job 37:10 in the NIV Bible: "The breath of God produces ____, and the broad waters become frozen."

Answer: ice

'Ice' is the correct word. In this incident, Elihu, one of Job's friends, is speaking.

Job's friends included Bildad (a Shuhite), Eliphaz (a Temanite) and Zophar (a Naamathite). They were later joined by a fourth friend, Elihu, who appears in the 32nd chapter of Job. Their conversations with Job comprise a major portion of the book.
10. Unscramble the letters in CHRONICLES to fill in the missing word from 1 Chronicles 15:27 in the NIV Bible: "Now David was clothed in a robe of fine linen, as were all the Levites who were carrying the ark, and as were the musicians, and Kenaniah, who was in charge of the singing of the _____. David also wore a linen ephod."

Answer: choirs

The missing word is choirs.

1 and 2 Chronicles are two books that tell of the rich history of the Israelites. Originally the two books were one. In fact, Chronicles appears as one book in the Hebrew Bible. No one knows for certain who wrote the two books, but Jewish tradition has it the books were written by Ezra.
