Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Boston Bruins are a member of the "Original 6" Club. The Flyers however, had only been around for a short time. How many seasons had the Flyers been in the NHL in 1974, the first year they made it to the finals?

Answer: 7

The Flyers came to be during the expansion season of 1967-68. They along with the Oakland Seals, L.A. Kings, Pittsburgh Penguins, Minnesota North Stars, and St. Louis Blues, were added to the league. While the Blues were the first of the expansion teams to reach the finals, the Flyers were the first to win the Stanley Cup.
2. Up to this 1974 Finals series, the Bruins had an incredible unbeaten streak against the Flyers at the Boston Garden. The streak was extended when Boston won game 1 by a 3-2 score. With that win, how many games was the unbeaten streak extended to?

Answer: 20

This unbeaten streak was extended to 18-0-2, and was the reason why the Bruins were heavy favorites to win the Cup considering they had home ice advantage.
3. After losing game 1, the Flyers played well in a defensive game 2, but they appeared to be heading for another Boston Garden defeat as the Bruins led 2-1 with a minute to play. Then with less than a minute to go, an unlikely hero stepped up for the Flyers and scored the tying goal sending the game into overtime. Who was this unlikely hero?

Answer: Andre Dupont

Although Dupont was one of the better defensemen in the NHL, scoring goals wasn't his forte. He only scored 3 goals during the regular season in 1973-74. But during the playoffs, "Moose" scored 4 goals, but none was bigger than this game tying goal with time running out.

This set up Bobby Clarke's dramatic overtime goal giving the Flyers a 3-2 victory, breaking a 7-year losing streak in Boston, and more importantly tying the series at a game each heading home to the Spectrum in Philadelphia.
4. During the 1973-74 regular season, the Flyers established themselves as one of the elite teams in the NHL through intimidation. Never was this intimidation factor more prevalent than at the fabled Philadelphia Spectrum, the venue for games 3, 4, and 6(if necessary) of this series. What nickname was given to the Flyers because of their rough style of play?

Answer: Broad Street Bullies

The name Broad Street Bullies had been synonymous with the Flyers since this era of hockey. It was because of this rough style of play that intimidated teams throughout their history of playing at the Spectrum. The once dominant Soviet Red Army hockey team, once considered the best in the world, were so intimidated by the Flyers, that they left the ice during their historic confrontation in 1976.

While 2 of the names I made up, Schultz's Army was the name of a group of fans who would wear German Army helmets with the Flyers logo painted on them, in support of Dave "The Hammer" Schultz.
5. After winning games 3 and 4 in Philadelphia, the Flyers took a commanding 3 games to 1 lead into Boston for game 5 needing just one more win to secure The Cup. The Bruins had other plans. Boston kept their hopes alive winning game 5 in resounding fashion. The Bruins won this game by what score?

Answer: 5-1

The Bruins, in what seemed to be a last hurrah for the season, didn't want to go gently into that good night and pounded the Flyers 5-1 closing the gap to 3 games to 2. All they had to do is win in Philly to force a game 7 at the Garden where the Flyers had won 1 game in 7 years.
6. Coming back to The Spectrum for game 6, the Flyers didn't want to take any chances and decided to roll out their good luck charm and decided to play "God Bless America" instead of the "Star Spangled Banner". In a surprise move, the singer most famous for singing this song wanted to sing it live. Who was this famous singer?

Answer: Kate Smith

When the Flyers played "God Bless America", more often than not they would win the game. Kate Smith performed the song live for the Flyers faithful 4 times with the Flyers winning 3 of those games. To honor Ms. Smith after her death in 1986, the Flyers erected a statue of her outside of the Spectrum.
7. In game 6, the Flyers scored first in the 1st period when Andre Dupont took a shot from the point which was deflected in front of Gilles Gilbert for the goal. Who made the deflection and was credited for the goal?

Answer: Rick MacLeish

That goal was all the Flyers needed as Bernie Parent shut down the Bruins high scorers Phil Esposito, Bobby Orr, Johnny Bucyk and company. The win gave the Flyers the first of 2 concsecutive Stanley Cup championships.
8. To Flyers fans, as time ticked off the clock at the end of game 6, there is no greater call than, "Ladies and gentlemen, the Flyers are going to win the Stanley Cup! The Flyers win the Stanley Cup! The Flyers win the Stanley Cup!" Who said those now immortal words?

Answer: Gene Hart

"The Voice of the Flyers" and Hall of Fame broadcaster Gene Hart was a member of the Flyers family until his death in 1999. His love for the sport of hockey was heard in his broadcast of the games. The term beloved doesn't begin to describe how Flyers fans felt about Mr. Hart.

His daughter, Lauren is herself a recording artist and sings the National Anthem at most Flyers games and has sung for the Eagles and 76ers as well.
9. The Conn Smythe trophy goes to the MVP of the entire playoffs. Who won the Conn Smythe for the 1974 NHL Playoffs?

Goaltender Bernie Parent won the Conn Smythe in back to back years in 1974 and 1975 as he lead the Flyers to back to back Stanley Cup championships. Parent also won the Vezina Trophy as the outstanding goaltender for the seasons of '74 & '75. Sadly, his career was cut short by a freak eye injury against the NY Rangers in 1979.
10. To celebrate the city's first world championship since the 1966-67 76ers, a multitude of fans turned out to cheer their hero's in a parade down Broad Street. What was the estimated size of the crowd that showed up to cheer the Flyers?
