Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who gave up Kirk Gibson's game winning HR in game five of the 1984 World Series?

Answer: Goose Gossage

This was a go-ahead home run in the 8th inning. This put Gibson's Tigers ahead of Gossage's Padres. The Tigers swept the series. The more famous Gibson HR was his shot off of Eckersley in game one of the 1988 World Series, when Gibson was a member of the LA Dodgers.
2. Who drove in Enos Slaughter from first base in the 8th inning of Game 7 of the 1946 World Series?

Answer: Harry Walker

Despite what most people believe, Walker's hit was a double, not a single. It is possible that Slaughter would have been thrown out, but Red Sox shortstop Johnny Pesky didn't throw home quick enough, leading to the Cardinals win.
3. Who did Grover Cleveland Alexander strike out in game 7 from the bullpen in the 1926 World Series?

Answer: Tony Lazzeri

In a clutch moment, Alexander comes out of the pen to strike out Lazzeri with the tying runs at the plate, leading to the Cards win.
4. Which Yankees manager won the World Series in each of his first 5 seasons with the club?

Answer: Casey Stengel

Stengel's Yanks won in 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952, and 1953, his first 5 seasons. Stengel later won the series in 1956 and 1958 as well.
5. Which of these pitchers did not win 3 games in a single World Series?

Answer: Sandy Koufax

Wood won 3 games in the 1912 Series for the Red Sox against the Giants. Brecheen won 3 games in 1946 for the Cardinals against the Red Sox. Lolich won 3 games in 1968 for the Tigers against the Cards.
6. What year did Troy Glaus win the World Series MVP?

Answer: 2002

Glaus won as the starting 3B for the 2002 champion, the Anaheim Angels, who defeated the San Francisco Giants in 7 games.
7. Which world champion was known as "the hitless wonders"?

Answer: 1906 White Sox

The 1906 White Sox, with a team average of .196, struggled on offense. However, their pitching led them to an upset over their crosstown rivals, the Cubs.
8. What year did Walter Johnson win his only World Series?

Answer: 1924

The 1924 Senators beat the NY Giants in 7 games. It took extra innings in the 7th game, where the Senators took advantage of 2 ground balls hitting a rock in front of Giants 3B Fred Lindstrom, which helped the winning run score.
9. Who was the Dodgers pitcher the day that Don Larsen threw a perfect game in Game 5 of the 1956 World Series?

Answer: Sal "the barber" Maglie

The former Giant Maglie was the opposing pitcher. Interestingly enough, he had a perfect game of his own until there were 2 outs in the 4th inning, when Mickey Mantle hit a HR.
10. Before Carlton Fisk's walkoff HR in game 6 of the 1975 World Series, which Red Sox player homered in the 8th to send the game to extra innings?

Answer: Bernie Carbo

Carbo's shot in the bottom of the 8th off of Rawley Eastwick set the stage for Fisk's heroics. However, the Red Sox lost the series in 7 games.
