Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these baseball greats did not hit at least 10 World Series home runs in their career?

Answer: Joe DiMaggio

Yankee Mickey Mantle retired with a record 18 World Series home runs in 12 World Series. Ruth hit 12 in 10 appearances, and Dodger Snider hit 11 in his six World Series. DiMaggio hit eight while being in the promised land 10 times.
2. Which World Series was the first-ever that was won with a walk-off hit?

Answer: 1924

Earl McNeely won it all for the Washington Senators in the 1924 series against the New York Giants. In game seven in the bottom of the 12th inning, McNeely's double scored Muddy Ruel to give Walter Johnson and the Senators a four games to three World Series crown. The pitch was dished up by Jack Bently of the Giants. It was the Senators' first World Series appearance.
3. Which of these pitchers struck out 12 batters in one World Series game, and still lost the game?

Answer: Orlando Hernandez: 2000

The others were already retired in the years listed. El Duque's Yankees lost game three of the 2000 World Series to the Mets, and he set a record for most strikeouts in a series game while losing.
4. Who was the first person ever to play in a World Series game, then later in his career, umpire in one?

Answer: Bill Dinneen

Dinneen pitched for 12 seasons in the National and American League. He was a pitcher for the Boston Americans in the first World Series in 1903. He went 3-1 against the Pittsburgh Pirates in Boston's five games to three win. Bill later became an umpire, and called the game in eight World Series between 1911 and 1932.
5. The Yankees were the first American League team to sweep two different World Series in four games. Which National League team was the first to sweep two different series in four games?

Answer: Cincinnati Reds

The Big Red Machine of Cincinnati was the first NL team, and swept the Yankees in the 1976 series, then swept the Athletics in 1990. The Yankees swept eight series in the 20th century, and were the only American League to do it more than once. The Reds were the only National League team to accomplish this more than once also.
6. In which World Series for the first time, did the total attendance between the two teams top the 400,000 mark?

Answer: 1959: Dodgers / White Sox

There were only two World Series in the 20th century that reached 400,000 in attendance. The first was the Los Angeles Dodgers' first World Series in Los Angeles against the White Sox in 1959. The Dodgers won in six games, four games to two with over 420,000 attending between the two teams.

The Dodgers played at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The second time was in 1997 when the Marlins defeated the Indians in seven games, with over 403,000 attending.
7. Who was the first pitcher in history to pitch in all seven games of a World Series?

Answer: Darold Knowles

The others were all starting pitchers. Knowles did it in 1973 in relief when his Athletics took on the Mets. Darold pitched a total of only 6.1 innings in the entire series. Oakland won the series four games to three.
8. Who was the first-ever person that was ejected for whatever reason from a World Series game?

Answer: Hughie Jennings

Jennings was player-manager of the Detroit Tigers in 1907 in the series against the Cubs. He was tossed after arguing a stolen base call. Medwick of the Cardinals, although Major League records show that he was officially ejected in 1934, was removed by the umpires for his own protection from Detroit Tiger fans. Pitcher Andujar and manager Whitey Herzog were ejected as a Cardinal package in 1985. Ruth was never ejected from a World Series game.
9. The World Series MVP Award began in 1955 with Dodger pitcher Johnny Podres winning it. Who was the first player to win two World Series MVP awards?

Answer: Sandy Koufax

Koufax was the MVP in the 1963 series against the Yankees, then won it again in the Dodgers' win against the Twins in 1965. Jackson also won two World Series MVPs in 1973 and 1977. Mike Schmidt won his only World Series MVP with the Phillies in 1980.
10. Which World Series saw the first-ever grand slam hit?

Answer: 1920

Elmer Smith of the Indians hit the big one in game five of the World Series against the Brooklyn Robins (later Dodgers). It was appropriate as the Indians and their fans were rebounding from the death of Ray Chapman, who died as a result of being hit in the head by a pitch during the season. Cleveland won the series five games to two.
