Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Gomez is hanging what picture in the playroom when Morticia enters?

Answer: Dewey for President poster

When Morticia hears he's hanging pictures, she hopes Gomez isn't hanging the one of Cousin Grisly facing the firing squad down there because it looks so nice in the hall. Gomez was hanging posters to get the playroom into the election spirit of men the Addamses had supported in the past: Thomas E. Dewey (who was defeated by Truman), Alf Landon (who was defeated by FDR and Morticia said he was a good loser), Al Smith (who lost to Hoover), Wendall Willkie (who lost to FDR), and Adlai Stevenson (who lost to Eisenhower...twice), and Stephen Douglas (who lost to Lincoln). Gomez and Morticia remarked that Uncle Blight masterminded many of the losers' campaigns and was nicknamed "Kiss of Death". Even Lincoln asked for Blight's support, but Blight gave it to Stephen Douglas instead. Gomez decided he would be supporting Quimby in the local city council election.
2. With Gomez hanging a Quimby for city council poster outside the home, a Hilliard campaign worker convinces Gomez to switch sides (despite Gomez having contributed a significant amount to Quimby). What is NOT one of the pitches the Hilliard campaign gives to sway Gomez to switch candidates?

Answer: Lower taxes

Gomez is intrigued when he hears 'drain the swamps' and asks for a picture of the candidate. It's Mr. Hilliard - the truant officer who initially came to the Addams house to get the children to attend school and met with the school board to get rid of the 'awful' Grimm fairy tale books that Gomez and Morticia didn't like. Gomez called Mr. Hilliard a fine man who had the shakes last time he came around. Gomez promises to not only change his vote but to go out and campaign for Mr. Hilliard. Gomez said changing horses in midstream was the Addams way. Morticia is mortified when she reads his platform, but Gomez says politicians always lie and the swamps are safe.
3. Mr. Hilliard is excited when he learns the Addams family is now going to support his election.

Answer: false

Mr. Hilliard wants nothing to do with the Addams family, but he's told that they're good for a nice contribution. Hilliard would rather lose than go over to the house and take their money.
4. Which is NOT a poster painted by Gomez, Morticia, Mama, or Fester?

Answer: Vote for Quimby

Mama and Gomez made "Hilliard is nice, vote for him twice."
Uncle Fester wrote "Tippecanoe and Hilliard too" on his.
Morticia wrote "Vote for Hilliard, Everybody's Fiend". She was missing the r but thought it looked better without it.

Mr. Hilliard did not like Morticia's sign. Gomez didn't think Hilliard would notice the missing r.

Later in the episode, Mama has a broom with a sign on it saying "Sweep Hilliard in."
5. Gomez wants to make a substantial contribution to the campaign. How substantial?

Answer: $20,000

Mr. Hilliard initially asks for a check of $5,000 so he can leave the house, but Gomez says that's a 'drop in the bucket' so Mr. Hilliard asks for $10,000 instead. Morticia responds $20,000 is the minimum they will give. But then they go on with ideas for the campaign. Mr. Hilliard just wants the money!
6. Gomez and Morticia seem to think they are keen election campaigners and offer Mr. Hilliard some suggestions. What is NOT a suggestion they offer to Mr. Hilliard?

Answer: Give out samples of Mama's cookies at campaign events

They think putting Lurch on TV will help appeal to the women's vote. Gomez believes you can't top Lurch's animal magnetism. Mr. Hilliard then requests just $10,000 instead of the $20,000.

Gomez and Mortician then suggest using the children to appeal to the 'junior voters', but Mr. Hilliard points out that children can't vote. Mr. Hilliard lowers his request to $5,000, but Morticia says they still need to let the children on tv or else they will be very disappointed. And Gomez points out they wrote speeches already. Mr. Hilliard lowers his request to $2,500.

When Morticia brings up Uncle Fester's campaign song, Mr. Hilliard lowers his request to $1,000 before he even hears the song. Lurch and Fester prepare to sing the song and Gomez says the song gets you right in the heart... Mr. Hilliard drops to $500 before hearing a note.
7. As Mr. Hilliard is trying to leave the Addams house, Gomez and Morticia corner him and tell him he can't leave before he sees the campaign mascot. What is the mascot they propose?

Answer: Kitty Cat

After Fester sings, Mr. Hilliard claims the campaign has more money than they need and says all his campaign promises are lies. This is exactly what Gomez told Morticia Mr. Hilliard would say (after all, they love their swamp and like the streets being dark and gloomy).

They love Mr. Hilliard even more and stop him from leaving before they show him the mascot (after all, the Democrats and Republicans have one, why doesn't he?). So Morticia calls Kitty Cat, who comes down the stairs, frightening Mr. Hilliard. Gomez and Morticia know they backed the right candidate.
8. Gomez is working on a campaign speech. Why does Morticia tell Gomez not to talk about education?

Answer: too controversial

She tells Gomez not to start with 'my friends' because he should get right to the issues. He shouldn't talk about peace because everyone wants it - including Mr. Quimby, the opposing candidate (and the one Gomez originally supported). Gomez asks if they should have high taxes or low taxes, but Morticia asks if that is a dangerous position. Education is too controversial, in her opinion. Social welfare is out too, but she doesn't give a reason why. Finally, the biggest issue: Swamps! But Morticia says the less said about that, the better. (Probably because Mr. Hilliard claimed to have lied on his campaign.)
9. What does Mr. Hilliard do when he finds the Addams family is out campaigning for him?

Answer: He starts chasing Fester in the street

Mr. Hilliard had just received news that he was projected to win the election when his campaign manager called to let Mr. Hilliard know that the Addams family was in the 4th Ward. Gomez and Morticia were at home watching the news when Mr. Hilliard was shown in the streets chasing Uncle Fester with a stick. Mr. Hilliard then went to the Addams home to try and convince them to stop campaigning for him.
10. When Mr. Hilliard threatens to get a lawyer if the Addams family doesn't leave him alone, Gomez takes out his card. Gomez is a lawyer! Morticia says that Gomez is responsible for what?

Answer: Putting more criminals behind bars than anyone else in the United States

Mr. Hilliard couldn't believe that Gomez was a prosecutor. But Gomez wasn't - he was a defense attorney. Apparently Gomez is the anti-Perry Mason (or anti-Matlock). But the conversation is interrupted by a telephone call fr Mr. Hilliard... the early returns are in! It's a landslide: for Mr. Quimby. Telephone calls start coming in and Hilliard is losing in each return. Gomez starts suggesting that Mr. Hilliard demand a recount while Morticia believes fraud was involved. Then Mr. Quimby calls to claim victory. It was over.

Mr. Hilliard quit politics in the end. Gomez believed it was because the Addams family got into the campaign too late. But the Addams family did make someone happy: Mr. Quimby had told Gomez that he wouldn't have won if it weren't for them. In the end, Mr. Hilliard was appointed head of the school board by the mayor and Gomez added Mr. Hilliard's campaign poster to the playroom wall.
