Morticia and Gomez were using a crossbow to shoot apples that Thing was throwing into the air and said it was easier than shooting apples off Lurch's head.

Lurch was on the rack and Mama said it was the only thing that helped him forget his troubles. It turns out Lurch's mom said she would come visit but Lurch had been lying to her.

Uncle Fester suggested mining the front porch so it would blow up when she pushed the doorbell. (Gomez improved upon the idea by suggesting they just wire the doorbell so it would electrocute her and thus the porch wouldn't be damaged.) Morticia didn't like that idea - she didn't think it would be kind to let her get all the way to the door and then disappoint her like that.

Gomez suggested having Lurch play dead, but Uncle Fester didn't think Lurch could be convincing. Morticia agreed, saying Lurch was so vivacious.

Morticia was the one who thought the family should just play along with Lurch's lie and let him be the master for the duration of his mother's visit.

Answer: She didn't want dishpan hands

Morticia said she would be the maid, Gomez would be the butler, and Mama would be cook. But Mama refused to get dishpan hands for anyone and would stay in the cottage for the visit. Gomez agreed and said she could watch the children.

Uncle Fester refused this job. Morticia thought Uncle Fester would have enjoyed puttering around and planting crab grass. But Uncle Fester liked the backyard the way it was: bare. He decided to move into the cottage with Mama and the children.

So it was just Morticia and Gomez who would run the house.

Answer: Lurch broke the rope to the bell

Lurch kept trying to do the things that Gomez, as the butler, was supposed to do. And when Gomez instructed Lurch to ring for the maid (Morticia), he pulled so hard that the rope came out of the ceiling.

Later on, when Morticia brought Lurch the paper, she explained that wealthy men turned to the financial page first. But Lurch liked the funny page and insisted on reading that.

Lurch's mother rings the bell three times - so neither Gomez nor Morticia know which one of them she wants (one ring is for Gomez and two is for Morticia), so the pair decide to stay put until Lurch's mother makes up her mind. Good timing, because Gomez's back goes out - he slept on the couch and hurt his back so much and, combined with Lurch's mother's constant demands, his back is all kinked up.

Luckily, Morticia save the octopus and Cleopatra just in time.

Morticia calmed Gomez down by saying it was just a few more days and sent him on his way to answer Lurch's mother, who was quite irate. Lurch's mother said she didn't trust Gomez because of his shifty eyes and because a butler shouldn't have a mustache, but Gomez replied that he was born with the mustache. But then Lurch's mother accuses Gomez of being off in a dark corner with 'that hussy of a maid'.

At the end of this scene is when Lurch's mother says she will extend her stay until the house is running properly.

Morticia and Gomez were talking in the kitchen and Morticia was relating that Lurch actually believes he's in charge of the house. This time, it's Gomez who is telling Morticia to hold out for a couple more days. Lurch's mother comes into the kitchen while Gomez is kissing Morticia's arm. She begins accusing Morticia of planning to marry Lurch, then Gomez will get rid of Lurch so Gomez and Morticia could have all of Lurch's money. (Lurch's mother actually calls Morticia a 'shameless witch.') Lurch's mother says she reads a lot of detective novels and it's always the butler who does it.

Gomez thinks about it and declares her idea (of Gomez killing Lurch) isn't that bad.

Answer: Buying another house for emergencies

Uncle Fester wondered how someone could get fired from their own house. Mama refused to give up her bed - she had just gotten the nails nicely broken in.

Uncle Fester said Gomez and Morticia were being too soft on Lurch, so he and Mama decided to go over to the main house and get rid of Lurch's mother. Or at least set things right. But Morticia didn't want to spoil things for Lurch, so Mama and Uncle Fester decided to pretend they were neighbors and would say what wonderful servants Morticia and Gomez were.

Gomez said if he and Morticia were re-hired, he was asking for a raise.

Answer: Mama and Uncle Fester arrived to be the new servants

When Mama and Uncle Fester went to the main house to try and get Gomez and Morticia their jobs back, Lurch's mother thought they were the new aid and butler from the employment agency. Seeing that the maid was older and thus less likely to be trying to seduce Lurch, she felt confident that Uncle Fester and Mama were 'real employees' and she could leave the house in capable hands.

It took a bit longer for Lurch to remember he was the butler.
