It's Not The Way That You Do It Quiz

Fun Boy Three et al said, in 1982, "It ain't what you do, it's the way that you do it". Some games offer a degree of freedom to complete the objectives. In this quiz, it's about what you do, rather than the way that you do it. (Some spoilers within.)

Question 1 of 10
1. Intended as a brief prelude to a much larger game, you (as Big Boss/Punished Snake) have several tasks to complete at a clandestine American military camp in Cuba in the mid-1970s. With a small handful of objectives, it's up to you to decide how best to complete them. Of course, going out there with guns blazing is just going to attract the attention of the military personnel straight away and make your task of extracting key targets or collecting classified intel just a little bit tougher. Then again, you could take it nice and slowly and be methodical in your infiltration of the base. Tranquilise your enemies, hide the bodies, stay in the shadows and rescue your main targets, Chico and Paz, without attracting too much attention.

Question 2 of 10
2. Framed for the murder of Empress Jessamine, you're tasked with removing the corrupt powers-that-be of Dunwall one at a time. How you go about it is up to you: you can take the silent, stealthy approach or complete your objectives with weapons blazing. You can have a clear conscience and take your targets out in nonlethal ways or spill the blood of your enemies in your quest for retribution.

Question 4 of 10
4. Although this sandbox game has no long-term definitive goal, per se, your objective in the short term is to simply survive. Dropped into a cuboid world, you can choose how you want to go about your life: chop down a few trees and build a makeshift hut to survive the night, or find shelter in a small cave. It's really up to you what you build and which tools and weapons you create.

Which phenomenally popular sandbox game created by Mojang is this?

Question 5 of 10
5. From pretty early on in the game, it's obvious what you're gearing up for - a one-way trip into the heart of your deadliest enemy's territory. It requires a team like no other with unwavering loyalty and an upgraded and strengthened Normandy starship to have a chance at surviving whatever lies on the other side of the Omega 4 Relay. Whether you, as Commander Shepard, decide to be either a Paragon or Renegade in terms of your morality, one thing is certain: it won't be easy.

Which space-faring and grandiose RPG title from 2010 is this?

Question 6 of 10
6. With Elder Dragons wreaking havoc across the land, it's pretty clear that dragonslaying is high up on your Tyrian to-do list. The path you take, however, is entirely up to you. You can choose your race, your profession and your back story. You can choose how you want to venture through the world and who you help or hinder. All your choices will lead you to the same place: the undead-infested region of Orr where you'll face the Elder Dragon Zhaitan.

7. Imbued with the unimaginable power to manipulate electricity, you, as Cole McGrath, have the ultimate goal of defeating yourself from an alternate future. Of course, how you go about this is up to you. With your new powers, you can use them for the good of the city, saving citizens and fighting back against rebellious and dangerous gangs, or take no prisoners and establish yourself as the city's top dog, laying waste to anyone and everyone unfortunate enough to be in your wake.

Question 8 of 10
8. Amongst all the fiendish puzzles in this philosophical game, you'll also be interacting with an artificial intelligence who tries to get you to question your existence and defy the instructions given to you by a mysterious omnipresent voice. Whether you choose to ascend and join Elohim, or defy him and venture to the top of the tower to discover the truth of your existence, this project to preserve humanity's knowledge is as complex as it is thought-provoking.

Which 2014 puzzle game by Croteam is this?

Question 9 of 10
9. In contrast to his previous adventures, Nathan Drake can, in some places, pop his guns away and stealthily move through the environment, alerting no one and not even touching a hair on their heads. That's not to say he can't rough some of them up if he doesn't want to, but at least he has the option to go unnoticed now. Anything to make finding Henry Avery's lost treasure easier, eh?

Which 2016 game and final outing for the dashing Nathan Drake is this?

Question 10 of 10
10. The princess has been captured by a giant tortoise-like bad guy. It's pretty obvious that you'll be trying to get her back from his lair. How you get there is your choice. You could, of course, play through the game normally, bouncing on Goombas, chomping on mushrooms and jumping over perilous chasms, and complete each and every level in order until you're done. Or, you could make use of the game's hidden warp zones and skip significant portions of the game, making your journey to save the princess a lot quicker.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Which Kojima Productions-developed 2014 prelude to "The Phantom Pain" is this?

Answer: Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes

"Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes" contains one primary mission and a handful of Side Ops, intended to both introduce both new and veteran players to the series' revised mechanics (as well as the shift to an open-world format) and to give a bit of back story ahead of the game's follow-up, "Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain".

Players will take control of Punished Snake (voiced by none other than Kiefer Sutherland) as he infiltrates the Cuban Camp Omega to rescue a couple of high-priority targets. The camp has multiple entry and exit points and a small army on alert, so players need to be constantly aware of their surroundings as they navigate to each target. Players are free to choose whatever route they like to complete the mission, though, of course, a stealthy, low-profile, swift approach is favoured more by the game's mission grading system.
Which video game developed by Arkane Studios in 2012 is this describing?

Answer: Dishonored

"Dishonored" focuses on Corvo Attano's mission to clear his name after being framed for the Empress' murder. Corvo, the former personal bodyguard to the Empress, escapes from his imprisonment and joins a group called the Loyalists, who believe in Corvo's innocence and help to clear his name by providing key targets to assassinate (or non-lethally incapacitate).

While he is able to obtain a range of otherworldly powers throughout the course of the game, as well as a variety of gadgets for dishing out the damage and whatnot, it is entirely possible to play through the whole thing without spilling a single drop of blood and without ever being detected either (feats which are rewarded with achievements or trophies, depending on platform).
3. Fancy tackling the dungeons of Hyrule and Lorule in whatever order you like? Go right ahead! The order doesn't matter here, as long as all the Sages are rescued. Be sure to stop by Ravio's shop and hire the special items you need first! Which 2013 "Legend of Zelda" game is this describing?

Answer: A Link Between Worlds

"The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds" is set in the same timeline as "A Link to the Past" and more or less the same version of Hyrule. With the Seven Sages sealed in paintings by the sinister Yuga (who intends to use their power to revive Link's perennial arch-nemesis Ganon), Link travels through both Hyrule and Lorule (a sort of 'dark world' version of Hyrule) to rescue them. With a bracelet given to him by a chipper merchant called Ravio, Link has the ability to transform himself into a moving, two-dimensional drawing and traverse along walls and enter cracks between Hyrule and Lorule.

What distinguishes "A Link Between Worlds" from its predecessors is the ability to tackle the game's dungeons in any order. As pretty much all items are available to Link right from the get go (courtesy of Ravio and a small fee to rent them), he can jump straight into whichever dungeon he chooses. Most dungeons require a particular item that is central to solving the puzzles within (the Tornado Rod, for instance, is required to complete the House of Gales).

Answer: Minecraft

What started as a simple concept became one of the world's most popular and widely-played video games. "Minecraft" is a simple, 3D, procedurally-generated sandbox game whereby players find themselves in a giant world and need to survive by using the resources available to them. For many playing in what the game classes as its classic Survival mode, it begins with punching a tree to get wood, which can then be used to make a workbench so that other items can be constructed, such as tools to harvest and mine more resources. Players not only have to manage their own health and hunger, they also need to defend against monsters (like skeletons, zombies, and the explosive creepers) that come out when darkness draws in.

For those who favour a less survival-based play style can opt to play the game in Creative mode, whereby there are no enemies and have unlimited access to all materials and resources. Typically, Creative mode is used by those who want to build elaborate structures and live out their architectural dreams vicariously through their in-game avatars.

Initially, the game was just a sandbox environment, but subsequent updates eventually added a sort-of goal to the game, known as The End. By scouring the world, players can find a stronghold and, within it, a portal to The End. On the other side awaits the Ender Dragon, whose defeat triggers the credits (though, once over, the game returns to the overworld and players can continue where they left off).

Answer: Mass Effect 2

Very rarely has a video game made the stakes feel so real as "Mass Effect 2" has done. With humans from across the galaxy being abducted by an alien race known as the Collectors, Commander Shepard is tasked by the Illusive Man, head of the pro-human Cerberus group, to tackle the threat head on and initiate a suicide mission into one of the most dangerous areas of the galaxy. The vast majority of the game consists of recruiting a genuinely likeable and interesting cast of characters to Shepard's squad aboard the Normandy SR-2 starship. Loyalty missions further strengthen their allegiance to the cause. To have the highest chance of keeping all squad members alive throughout the suicide mission, players need to make sure all loyalty missions are successfully completed and the Normandy has been upgraded to its maximum (upgrades are found throughout the Milky Way).

Working behind all of this is the game's morality system, which determines whether Shepard is considered a Paragon or a Renegade. Certain actions or conversation options affect Shepard's morality, with blue Paragon options being more heroic and empathetic, while red Renegade options reinforce Shepard's hard-hearted, often remorseless behaviour.
Which MMORPG, developed by ArenaNet and released in 2012, is this?

Answer: Guild Wars 2

In fact, this could probably be said of most RPGs, since there is some degree of personal customisation and choice in each. Not everyone's experience will be exactly the same.

Set some 250 years after the events of the previous game (and the timesink of my adolescence) "Guild Wars", we explore the continent of Tyria to vanquish a threat much greater than anything seen before. Yep, the Elder Dragons, ancient, mystical beings almost as old as the land itself, are on the stir and threaten all life on Tyria. First on the chopping block is Zhaitan, the Elder Dragon of death. Players begin in one of five starting places (depending on their chosen race) and make their way down to the once-sunken-but-now-risen landmass of Orr to face Zhaitan head-on. Thing is, killing an Elder Dragon is a bit of double-edged sword. See, Elder Dragons, for all their corruption and defilement and destruction, maintain the balance of magic in the world. They awaken, absorb it all at once (which may or may not involve the devastation of most of the world's inhabitants too) and then go back into hibernation and slowly release that magic back into the world until they're ready to rinse and repeat. Slaying an Elder Dragon creates an imbalance and a surge of magical energy as it released back into the world.
Which Sucker Punch-developed 2009 game for the PlayStation 3 is this?

Answer: InFamous

The karma system is pretty much at the forefront of "inFamous", and players are immediately able to start choosing their good or evil path as soon as the game starts. Performing good actions, such as reviving citizens and restraining enemies, enhances Cole's Hero status and unlocks powers which have less of an effect on innocent bystanders if they happen to be in harm's way. Conversely, evil actions, like attacking citizens left, right and centre, shift Cole towards an Infamous status, and his powers become more destructive and without distinction between civilians and enemies.

While playing through the game twice can be mildly tedious, experiencing both karmic extremes results in different playing styles and variations in the game's main narrative. The karmic system carries forward into the sequel, "InFamous 2", and players are able to start off with a few extras based on their karmic state at the end of the previous game (should "InFamous 2" detect a save game from "InFamous" on the PS3).

Answer: The Talos Principle

If you're coming to "The Talos Principle" expecting a game like "Portal", you'll be both pleased and disappointed. It stands on its own two feet as one of the most creative puzzle games in recent years, in terms of both its gameplay and narrative. Players control a robotic character inside some sort of multi-environment simulation, solving a whole range of puzzles along the way. Throughout these environments, players are guided by a disembodied voice named Elohim, who attempts to guide them through to edification. Countering Elohim's God-like status is an AI named Milton, who can be interacted with at various computer terminals and who constantly questions the player on their surroundings, consciousness and existence.

Ultimately, players are presented with a number of choices: join Elohim (which ends the game and returns players to the beginning to start over), discover the secret of the tower and become a Messenger for future experiments, or ascend to the top of the tower (against Elohim's wishes) and discover the true nature of the simulation and their place within it.

Answer: Uncharted 4: A Thief's End

The "Uncharted" games have always had a bit of linearity to them, and that's not to say that's a bad thing. Far from it. However, with "Uncharted 4", developers Naughty Dog gave us the opportunity to approach certain encounters in a different way. Whether it's in the windy highlands of Scotland or the arid desert landscapes of Madagascar, Nate and co can stow their weapons and put their stealth skills to the test as they attempt to evade the wrath of the Shoreline mercenaries.

In a style reminiscent of recent "Assassin's Creed" games, Nate can crouch and move quietly through patches of long grass, popping up for a non-lethal takedown or avoiding enemies entirely.

This simple change to these encounters opens up an enjoyable alternative to progressing, as it shifts away from running in with guns blazing and favours creative thinking in how best to silently eliminate or evade the threats until the coast is clear.
Which classic NES video game (and arguably Nintendo's most famous) is this?

Answer: Super Mario Bros.

You would assume that a game like "Super Mario Bros." is fairly linear, and you'd be right... if you played it without warping. Of course, this method merely allows you to jump forward to later worlds in the game, cutting down your overall playtime as you direct Mario towards the ultimate goal of rescuing Princess Peach from Bowser's clutches.

"Super Mario Bros." contains three warp zones, two of which are located in the same level. World 1-2's hidden warp zone offers the opportunity to jump ahead to World 2, 3, or 4. World 4-2 houses the remaining two warp zones, with pipes leading to World 5 in one zone and World 6, 7, and 8 in the other.
