Better Call Saul - Season 1 Trivia Questions

1. The episode begins in a flashback with Jimmy's friend Marco in a bar in Cicero, Illinois. What is Marco doing at the bar?

From Quiz
"Better Call Saul" - Season 1 Episode 10

Answer: Bar bets

At the cost of a $20 bill, Marco amazes two young bar customers at his ability to remove the bill without upsetting a bottle cap. When the men ask how he does it, Marco asks if they have another twenty.

2. The episode begins with Jimmy and Chuck sitting on a park bench. There is an overhead electrical transformer nearby and Chuck becomes increasingly nervous. What does Jimmy suggest to his brother to help him relax?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" - Season 1 Episode 9

Answer: Remove his shoes and socks

At his brother's suggestion Chuck removes his shoes and socks and wiggles his toes in the grass. This calms Chuck for only a short while before he insists on returning to his electricity-free home.

3. The episode opens with a flashback to a younger Jimmy working at his brother Chuck's law firm. What is his position at Hamlin Hamlin & McGill?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" - Season 1 Episode 8

Answer: Mail boy

In flashbacks, Jimmy's character wears a youthful wig. He happily and diligently delivers mail throughout the office, greeting and chatting with the other employees.

4. The opening scene of this episode takes place on a bench at the Albuquerque Police Department. What is on the wall above the bench?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" - Season 1 Episode 7

Answer: Wanted posters

Jimmy and Mike sit on a bench awaiting the homicide detectives from Philadelphia. They return the notebook stolen from one of the cops and explain that they found it in the parking lot. The frustrated cop does not believe them, but cannot prove otherwise.

5. As the episode opens, what form of transportation is Mike using?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" - Season 1 Episode 6

Answer: Railroad

The last episode ends with Mike parking in front of a house as a young woman comes out and drives past him with a hesitant nod of recognition. In the flash back, this young woman meets Mike at the Albuquerque train station.

6. Gale Boetticher was one of Walter White's associates in "Breaking Bad", and he lived on Juan Tabo Blvd. Where did that street name show up in the "Uno" episode?

From Quiz "Breaking Bad" Easter Eggs -- Season 1

Answer: On Jimmy's paycheck from the court

Next to Walter White's address, Gale Boetticher's was probably the best known on "Breaking Bad". He lived at 6353 Juan Tabo, and Walt emphasized knowing the address when he sent Jesse Pinkman to take care of Boetticher. In the "Uno" episode, Jimmy received a payment of $700 for defending three hooligans, but he was expecting $2100 - $700 per defendant. When he complained to the cashier, he pinned the check against her window, and his address could be plainly seen: 160 Juan Tabo NE. Incidentally, while Jimmy was arguing with a court clerk, the camera cut away from him to a shot of the lobby, and dead center of the picture was a coat rack with what appeared to be Heisenberg's hat and jacket on it. Another Easter egg or just a coincidence?

7. Jimmy decided to give the class action lawsuit to Hamlin Hamlin & McGill after all, and he met with Howard Hamlin. When Howard gave him the $20k "of counsel fee" check, what did Jimmy give him in return?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul": 1.10 "Marco"

Answer: Chuck's shopping list

When Howard asked Jimmy how he found out that Chuck was behind the refusal to let Jimmy work as a lawyer at HHM, Jimmy admitted that he "figured it out on his own. About time, right?" Howard told him that "he never wanted it to go this way", and he started to tell Jimmy what he would have done, but Jimmy cut him off, so we didn't find out whether Howard would have hired him as a lawyer. When Jimmy gave Howard the shopping list, he explained that Chuck needed deliveries every day, with the ice being the most difficult. Jimmy said he would "sneak into a motel and fill a garbage bag" with ice but suggested that Howard could just buy it. Howard seemed genuinely shocked that Jimmy had been doing these chores daily for Chuck for more than a year.

8. Who told Jimmy in the "Mijo" episode that, "I like ripping off thieves 'cause they can't go to the cops. They have no recourse"?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul": Who Said What in Season One?

Answer: Nacho

Jimmy had told Tuco and Nacho about the $1.6 million that Craig Kettleman had embezzled from the county when he and the skateboarders were being threatened in the desert. Nacho later showed up at Jimmy's sad little office in the back of the salon to propose a finder's fee for Jimmy if Jimmy could tell him where Kettleman was keeping the money. Nacho had decided that he wanted to steal the money; he just needed to know where it was.

9. In the "Uno" episode, to whom did Jimmy say, "The only way that entire car is worth 500 bucks is if there's a $300 hooker in it"?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul": The Best of Jimmy Season 1

Answer: Two skateboarders

While distracted while driving, Jimmy hit a skateboarder who smashed into his windshield. The victim's brother had filmed the accident, and when the two tried to shake down Jimmy for cash in lieu of calling the police, Jimmy called their bluff. He kicked the skateboarder who supposedly had a broken leg and pointed out that they didn't pick a good victim for their scam since his car wasn't worth the $500 they wanted.

10. What does Chuck's neighbor across the street do when he takes her newspaper from the driveway?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" - Season 1 Episode 5

Answer: Calls the police

Apparently there is little crime in Albuquerque, New Mexico, as a patrol car and two policemen respond to a 50-cent newspaper theft call. Chuck, a prominent attorney, attempts to engage the cops in a legal debate through his locked front door.

11. In a flashback to Jimmy McGill's delinquent younger days, what did he and another young man find in alley?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" - Season 1 Episode 4

Answer: Unconscious man

Probably a con-man from birth, Jimmy and the unconscious fat man are actually partners in the scamming of Jimmy's companion with a fake Rolex watch. A hint of the future is given when Jimmy makes the comment "s'all good, man".

12. At the beginning of the episode, what did Mike give his granddaughter Kaylee, which he talked Stacey into keeping?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul": 1.9 "Pimento"

Answer: A dog

In the "RICO" episode, we saw Mike show up at the veterinarian office with a dog that he said he got from the shelter. The dog was an excuse to visit the vet, who ran a side business handling shady transactions. Mike then brought the dog to his daughter-in-law's house as a gift for Kaylee, who seemed thrilled with the pup, but her mom wasn't as enthused. When Mike pointed out that burglars avoid homes with dogs, Stacey didn't quite buy that the little dog would scare anyone away, but she gave in and let Kaylee keep the dog. While Mike was at their house, he received a call from the vet with his first assignment.

13. The episode opens with a flashback to James' pre-lawyer days, and attorney Chuck is visiting him in jail. Where are they?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" Season 1 Episode 3

Answer: Chicago

A grungy, long-haired Jimmy is happy to see his older brother Chuck, a prominent New Mexico attorney. The Cook County jail is not the best setting for a family reunion, as Chuck has not heard from Jimmy in several years.

14. At the beginning of the episode, as Jimmy was making the rounds, delivering mail, he brought Kim Wexler a letter and asked her to open it for him. What did the letter say?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul": 1.8 "RICO"

Answer: He had passed the bar exam.

Jimmy had once worked for Hamlin, Hamlin & McGill, no doubt thanks to his brother, but unbeknownst to Chuck, Jimmy had aspired to move up from the mail room. He had received his law degree through distance learning from the University of American Samoa ("Go Land Crabs!"), and on his third attempt, he'd passed the bar exam, allowing him to practice law in New Mexico. But his desire to move up in the firm was squashed by Howard Hamlin, which could be the reason that Jimmy had such a dislike for him later on.

15. James sees two skateboards on the front lawn of a house. He knocks on the door and tries to peek through the window. While this is happening, what's going on with the two skateboarders doing inside?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" - Season 1 Episode 2

Answer: They are gagged and bound

The two young con men are learning that it is not wise to threaten and insult a little old lady in front of her grandson. Beaten, gagged and bound, they are excited in a muffled kind of way when James arrives at the home.

16. Apparently, Jimmy's coffee-spilling routine didn't fool the Philadelphia detective for very long - he knew that Jimmy and Mike had conspired to take his notepad. What excuse did Jimmy provide for having the notepad?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul": 1.7 "Bingo"

Answer: They found it in the parking lot.

The episode began with Jimmy and Mike sitting on a bench beneath a rogue's gallery of wanted pictures in the courthouse. Detectives Abbasi and Sanders appeared; Abbasi was irate and threatened to take both of them into custody. Jimmy told the detective that they just now had found the notepad in the parking lot as they were coming to meet with the detectives. When Abbasi told Mike "wait 'til I get you back to Philadelphia", Jimmy intervened, "I'm confused. The State of Pennsylvania can extradite people for returning lost property?" After Abbasi left, Mike told Jimmy thanks and that he could leave, and then Mike and Detective Sanders sat and chatted. They were apparently old friends. Sanders told him that if Mike's daughter-in-law had nothing to tell them that it would be the end of it, so he advised Mike to talk to her, but Mike said he was leaving it up to her. Sanders clearly believed that Mike was guilty ("[Abbasi] needed to learn that some rocks you don't turn over"), but he wasn't going to do anything about it.

17. In the train station restroom, what did Mike use to replace the bandage on the bullet wound in his shoulder?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul": 1.6 "Five-O"

Answer: Sanitary napkin

After being met by his daughter-in-law Stacey at the train station, Mike said he needed to use the restroom. He bought the sanitary napkin in the women's restroom after first checking that the room was empty by pretending to be a janitor. He then went into the men's room and changed the bandage on the bullet wound in his shoulder.

18. When the police went to Chuck's house to ask him about his neighbor's newspaper, Chuck lectured them on probable cause. What did the officers see through a window that they believed was probable cause for kicking in his door?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul": 1.5 "Alpine Shepherd Boy"

Answer: Destroyed electric panels and stockpiled fuel

While Chuck was ranting about legal procedures, one of the policeman went around the back of the house and saw the destroyed electric breaker boxes and containers of fuel through a window. He called the other officer to have a look, and that officer stated that Chuck sounded like a "tweaker". When the officers gave Chuck a final warning to open the door, he asked them to leave their electronic devices outside, especially their Tasers, but the officers instead broke down the door and Tasered him.

19. In the flashback sequence at the beginning of the "Hero" episode, Jimmy's acquaintance asked him what his name was. What did Jimmy tell him?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul": 1.4 "Hero"

Answer: Saul

The flashback sequence took place in the "Slippin' Jimmy" days in Cicero, Illinois. Jimmy and his acquaintance were prowling the quiet streets one evening, looking for some fun. When he asked what Jimmy's name was, Jimmy told him it was "Saul. S'all good, man". The seed was planted.

20. When Tuco's grandmother saw the blood stain on the carpet in the "Mijo" episode, what did Tuco tell his grandmother that it was?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul": 1.2 "Mijo" and 1.3 "Nacho"

Answer: Salsa

The two skateboarders had followed Tuco's grandmother into the house to shake her down for money, and Tuco became upset when the skateboarders called his grandmother a slang word. He sent her up to her room to watch her telenovela while he dealt with them by knocking them out with her cane. She heard the noises downstairs and came to check. When she saw the stain, Tuco told her it was salsa, and she told him to clean it up with club soda. He was trying to clean up the stain when Jimmy McGill showed up.

21. When we first see Saul in the first episode of "Better Call Saul", where was he working?

From Quiz Introducing "Better Call Saul"

Answer: A Cinnabon in Omaha

"Better Call Saul" started with a black and white scene from the future: As Saul had told Walter White at the end of "Breaking Bad", he was living out his best case scenario, working as the manager at a Cinnabon in Omaha. Wearing a name tag that said "Gene", he was barely recognizable, balding with a droopy mustache. He was later shown at home, watching a VHS tape of his glory days - his old Albuquerque "Better Call Saul" commercials, while drinking a Scotch and Drambuie.

22. Where is the main character working in the series opening scene?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" - Season 1 Episode 1

Answer: Cinnabon

Actor Bob Odenkirk is barely recognizable in a mustache, glasses and paper hat as he performs the menial tasks of a fast food worker. Fans familiar with "Breaking Bad" will know that character development moves rather slowly in Vince Gilligan's world.

23. A somber Slippin' Jimmy gets out of jail and meets Marco in their regular bar hangout. What announcement does he make that surprises his friend?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" - Season 1 Episode 10

Answer: He is moving to New Mexico

Jimmy explains to Marco that his latest run-in with the law necessitated his brother flying in from Albuquerque, and that he needs to make big changes in his life. As Jimmy tries to console his friend, an impatient Chuck is waiting in a taxi whose driver is beginning to honk the horn.

24. What kind of pet does Mike buy for his granddaughter Kaylee?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" - Season 1 Episode 9

Answer: Dog

Mike adores Kaylee and buys her a dog. He explains to the financially struggling Stacey that has all expenses are paid and there is a bag of food in his car. Mike even agrees to keep the dog at his place and allow Kaylee to visit frequently. Seeing Kaylee and the dog playing happily, Stacey agrees to keep the animal.

25. Jimmy enters Kim Wexler's tiny office and asks her for what favor?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" - Season 1 Episode 8

Answer: Open an envelope

Jimmy does receive a huge kiss on the lips from the beautiful Kim. Shocking to everyone, Jimmy passes the New Mexico Bar Exam.

26. How is Chuck treating his electromagnetism allergy?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" - Season 1 Episode 7

Answer: Short outdoor exposures

While making his daily visit to his brother's, Jimmy is disturbed that Chuck is not in the house but in the back yard exposing himself to a nearby electrical power source. Chuck explains that he is attempting longer sessions each time and has worked up to two minutes.

27. Why does Mike need to use the men's room?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" - Season 1 Episode 6

Answer: Change bandages

Mike first enters the women's bathroom where he purchases a sanitary napkin. He later goes into the men's room to re-dress a shoulder wound.

28. As Jimmy was heading to his dilapidated car in the "Uno" episode, he walked past a vehicle that would become Saul Goodman's set of wheels in "Breaking Bad". What type of vehicle was it?

From Quiz "Breaking Bad" Easter Eggs -- Season 1

Answer: Cadillac DeVille

The writers got us with this one. If you watched "Breaking Bad", you weren't surprised to see Jimmy heading toward the shiny white Cadillac, but he walked past it and put his briefcase on a 1998 Suzuki Esteem that had seen better days. The tacky yellow car with a red rear door was purposely selected for the character; creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould apparently even considered having the word "Esteem" as a decal on the car. The white Cadillac surfaced again, although only in words, in the "Marco" episode when Marco told Jimmy that he must be the "king of the desert, driving around town in a white Cadillac".

29. Jimmy put on his "Matlock" suit and went back to hosting Bingo for senior citizens, but he had a meltdown. What reoccurring letter brought it about?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul": 1.10 "Marco"

Answer: B

Jimmy apparently had decided to resume his elder law career, and the Bingo game started out well enough: "O-64 as in Oh to be 64 again" and "N-32, N as in Nancy Reagan", but then he had a string of "B"s, and as he struggled to come up with phrases, the words "betrayal" and "brother" came out: "I'm sure a lot of you have brothers, not like mine though". Then when the fifth B came up, he said, "B, as in this B thing is really starting to tick me off". He then started his rant about Albuquerque, calling it a "God-forsaken waste land" and "a soulless, radioactive Georgia O'Keeffe hell-scape".

30. In the "Nacho" episode, who asked Jimmy, "You didn't do the sex robot voice, did you?"

From Quiz "Better Call Saul": Who Said What in Season One?

Answer: Kim

Jimmy had called the Kettlemans to warn them that they might be in danger since he knew that Nacho wanted to go after their money. He at first tried to disguise his voice using a paper towel tube, but they couldn't understand him, so he ended up quickly warning them in his own voice. After the Kettlemans disappeared, he confessed to Kim, telling her what he had done, and she immediately asked him the above question, to which he answered yes.
