Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the more popular board games in Japan is similar in many respects to the Western version of chess. What is the name of this game?

Answer: Shogi

Shogi is a fascinating and vastly complex board game which is popular in Japan. It is played on a 9x9 board and the pieces are placed within the squares. Captured pieces may be used by the capturing player and placed on the board during a turn. There is an interesting and lively variant of Western chess called, "Bughouse," (Double Bughouse for 4 players) which also employs this technique of reusing captured pieces.
2. Stratego is a classic board game of strategy that is played on a ten by ten board. What is the object of this deceptively complex game?

Answer: capture the opponent's flag

The object of Stratego is to capture the opponent's flag. Players have forty pieces each and the pieces may be arranged in any manner within the forty square matrix closest to each player's side of the board. There are two lakes in the center within which no pieces may enter or cross. There are well defined strategies for expert players.
3. In the traditional game of American checkers or British draughts, how may the pieces move?

Answer: diagonally

The traditional rules for American checkers stipulate that the pieces move and capture in a diagonal manner. Naturally, there are many variants which allow for other methods of movement. American checkers is generally played upon an eight by eight board. The checkers are placed within the squares and there are 12 pieces for each player.
4. The game of backgammon is a popular board game with a rich history. How is the movement of the pieces determined?

Answer: rolling dice

Players roll a pair of dice in order to determine how their pieces may move. The numbers showing on each die may be allocated to one or two pieces during a turn. Even though the usage of dice introduces an element of random chance in the game, the player with the better strategy should win.
5. In the accompanying photo, the player with the White pieces is playing with a handicap. Which piece is missing?

Answer: the knight on b1

There are many ways for a game of chess to be played with "odds" offered to the weaker player. In this example, White has removed the knight on b1. This is often referred to as, "Knight odds." Interestingly enough, the value of such a handicap depends on the ratings of the players. For example, the handicap value increases with higher rated players.
6. In the game of Pictionary, how do players advance along the board?

Answer: correctly guessing a word from a player's drawing

The Junior Pictionary version of the game is shown in the photo. Each space on the board represents a category. An appointed player then tries to draw a picture based on the word shown on the card in its corresponding category. Correct guesses allow the team to advance along the board. The team reaching the ending square on the board first wins the game.
7. In the ancient game of Xiangqi, there is a geographical feature across the center of the board. Which kind of feature is it?

Answer: a river

Xiangqi or Chinese chess is an enormously popular board game in China. It is similar to Western chess in many respects. One of the major differences is the inclusion of a river across the middle of the board. Pawns or soldiers have limited mobility until after they cross the river. Elephants may not cross the river.

The Chinese characters represent: "Cho River" and "Han Boundary." (Translation from Korean Hanja to English)
8. What are the official board dimensions in the grand game known as Go or Wei Qi? (361 points of intersection)

Answer: 19 x 19

The former World Chess Champion, Emmanuel Lasker (1868-1941) said this about the game of Go: "The rules of Go are so elegant, organic, and rigorously logical that if intelligent life forms exist elsewhere in the universe, they almost certainly play Go." The stones are alternately placed on the intersections of a 19 by 19 square board.

The ultimate objective is to capture the most amount of territory on the board.
9. Korean chess is similar to Chinese chess in many respects. Each player has 16 pieces. How many "soldiers" or "pawns" does each player have? (4th and 7th ranks)

Answer: five

In Korean chess (Janggi) each player has five soldiers. For ease of reference they are also referred to as "pawns." The pawns may move forward or horizontally one point at a time. Captures are performed in the same manner. As the pawns may not move backwards, reaching the final rank is not advantageous. The pawns have a relative value of about 2 points.
10. In the accompanying photo of a Scrabble board, there are two blank tiles. Which two letters fit in the blanks? (1. Across: FROT* - Down: *EN) (2. Across: D*AL - Down: *QUIP)

Answer: H and E

Starting from the left-hand side of the board, the blank tile should be the letter, "H," forming the words, FROTH and HEN. On the right-hand side of the board, the letter "E" forms the words, DEAL and EQUIP.
