quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The Colour Of Magic": Where does Rincewind go at the end of this book?

Answer: Over the edge of the Disc

Rincewind goes to Roundworld in "The Science Of The Discworld". He is in the Dungeon Dimension at the start of "Eric". He goes to Four Ecks in "The Last Continent".
2. "The Light Fantastic": What is the last word in this book, not including "The End"?

Answer: Disappeared

"Turtle" was the last word of the second to last paragraph, "choice" was the last word of the third to last paragraph, and "while" was the last word of the fourth to last paragraph.
3. "Equal Rites": In this book the witches challenge inequality. Where?

Answer: Unseen University

This is the witches' first outing. They are in fact from Lancre, and they go to Genua in "Witches Abroad"; the vampires they tackle in "Carpe Jugulum" are from Uberwald.
4. "Mort". Who is Mort?

Answer: Death's Apprentice

Mort ends up marrying Death's adopted daughter and they produce a child, Susan Sto-Helit.
5. " " The title is missing. What is the title of the fifth Discworld novel?

Answer: "Sourcery"

"Thief Of Time" and "Nightwatch" are the twenty-sixth and twenty- seventh Discworld novels and do not feature in this quiz. "The Science Of The Discworld" discusses quantum and creation theories, giving them a unique Discworld slant.
6. "Wyrd Sisters": What is Verence's profession?

Answer: Fool

He eventually becomes king with the help of Nanny Ogg and Granny Weatherwax. He marries Magrat Garlick. This book has some similarities to Shakespeare's "Macbeth".
7. "Pyramids": Who is the hero of this book?

Answer: Teppicymon XXVIII

He is known as Teppic for short. His father was Teppicymon XXVII. Teppic was trained at the Assasin's Guild before he was forced to take over his father's throne in the kingdom of Djelibeybi.
8. "Guards Guards": What is the first line of this book?

Answer: "This is where the dragons went"

"Now read on ..." is the first line of "Lords And Ladies", "It was a warm spring night..." is the first line of "Feet Of Clay", and "It was a moonless night..." was the first line of "Jingo".
9. "Eric": Which word is crossed out on the front cover of this book?

Answer: Faust

Eric tries to enslave a demon. Unfortunately, he ends up pulling Rincewind out of the Dungeon Dimension instead. It is actually quite difficult to decide which of these two characters is the most hopeless.
10. "Moving Pictures": Who has to hold up the collapsing ceiling of Holy Wood Hill?

Answer: Detritus

He is probably the only one who would have had the strength. Detritus is a troll, Carrot claims to be a dwarf, Angua is a werewolf, and Colon is a human.
11. "Reaper Man": Which of these organisations featured in this book?

Answer: Reg Shoe's Fresh Start Club

This society represents the rights of the undead. Reg Shoe is a zombie. Vampires and werewolves are also welcome. This book features a backlog of the undead because Death has gone absent without leave.
12. "Witches Abroad": Where do the witches go to?

Answer: Genua

They go there to do battle with Granny's evil sister Lilith. Genua is like some kind of Carribean island, either that or the American deep South. Lilith has an unhealthy obsession with mirrors.
13. "Small Gods": Where does Brutha meet the Great God Om?

Answer: In a garden

Om has been reduced to appearing as a tortoise because he only has one true believer left, which is Brutha. The villain of this book is the Exquisitor Vorbis.
14. "Lords And Ladies": Which Shakespeare play is this a parody of?

Answer: "A Midsummer Night's Dream"

This book puts Granny and the other witches up against a group of elves. This book also includes the wizards from Unseen University. It is interesting to compare and contrast them with the witches.
15. "Men At Arms": At the start of the book Carrot is writing a letter. How does he start this letter?

Answer: Dearest Mume and Dad

Carrot's spelling is not the best. Perhaps this is not surprising, as he was brought up as a dwarf. This must have been a difficult upbringing, as there are several references to Carrot being over six feet tall.
16. "Soul Music": What instrument does Imp play?

Answer: Guitar

Rock and Roll comes to the Discworld As The Band With Rocks In goes on tour, but there is too much magic involved- surely it will all end in tears? If you do not know you will have to read the book.
17. "Interesting Times": Which of these is the correct curse?

Answer: "May you live in interesting times"

This book is mainly set in the Agatean Empire, which closely resembles China in the past, complete with Terracotta army. Rincewind is our star and we are reintroduced to Twoflower, who last featured in "The Light Fantastic".
18. "Maskerade": Who is Mr Pounder "collected" by following his death?

Answer: The Death of rats

He was considered to be sufficiently rat-like for this to occur. The same thing happened to Mr Clete in "Soul Music". Mort had to collect souls as Death's apprentice, as did Susan Sto-Helit, Death's granddaughter.
19. "Feet Of Clay": What is the motto on the coat of arms of Mr Rudolph Potts, the baker?

Answer: Quod subigo farinam

"Si non confectus non reficiat" is the motto of the Vetinari family. "Nil mortifi sine lucre" is the motto of the Assasin's Guild, and "Protego et servio" was the motto of the Vimes family before it was withdrawn.
20. "Hogfather": Who fills in for the "Hogfather"?

Answer: Death

Death was hilarious when he was put in this position. However, I can not help thinking it would have been just as funny had it been any of the three alternatives.
21. "Jingo": Which country does Ankh-Morpork go to war with in this book?

Answer: Klatch

Commander Vimes finds himself in the unfortunate position of trying to prevent all-out war between the Discworld's two superpowers. With Seargent Colon and Corporal Nobs to help him, he might have his work cut out.
22. "The Last Continent": Which place does it most resemble?

Answer: Australia

For a start it is called Four Ecks, which is a brand of Australian beer. Also, there are kangaroos all over the place. I think this book is the best one about Rincewind and the other wizards.
23. "Carpe Jugulum": What does the title mean in English?

Answer: Seize the throat

"Carpe Jugulum" is the motto of the Magpyr family who feature in the book. (They are vampires) "Carpe diem" means seize the day. The line features in the film "Dead Poet's Society".
24. "The Fifth Elephant": Where is the majority of this book set?

Answer: Uberwald

The title is a pun on the film "The Fifth Element". If you read Pratchett a lot, you will find that he continuously uses puns and parodies, which greatly adds to the humour.
25. "The Truth": This book is about the Discworld's first what?

Answer: Newspaper

"Moving Pictures" is about the first movie. "Soul Music" is about the first rock band. "Lawyer" was just a red herring; there is not a book about the first lawyer.
