Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Name the 1989 cop buddy movie starring Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell: "___ and Cash".

Answer: Tango

Stallone played Raymond Tango and Russell played Gabriel Cash. They are framed by a crime lord (played by Jack Palance) for the murder of an undercover FBI agent and must escape prison to prove their innocence.

Although Stallone offered Russell a role in his "The Expendables" franchise, Russell turned him down. They were, however, reunited in 2017 in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2". Stallone played Stakar Ogord and Russell was Ego.

2. The 1964 movie "Zulu" depicted the Anglo-Zulu war battle at Rorke's Drift in 1879. While the movie starred Stanley Baker, it was also the first major role for an enduring British actor. Who was he?

Answer: Michael Caine

"Zulu" was apparently an accurate depiction of the Battle of Rorke's Drift where 150 British soldiers held off 4,000 Zulu warriors. This was Mr. Caine's 17th film role but his first major role. After subsequently starring in "Alfie" (1966), Mr. Caine's star was firmly in the ascending.

3. Complete the title of the 1959 Howard Hawks film in which John Wayne confronts a powerful rancher and his gang after he's arrested the man's brother; "Rio ____".

Answer: Bravo

Nathan Burdette, played by John Russell, arrives in Rio Bravo with the intent of removing his brother from the cell, in which sheriff John Chance (Wayne) is holding him, by any means possible. With the townsfolk scared to intervene after one of Burdette's men shoots and kills a friend of Chance, the sheriff is left to confront the gang with the aid of two deputies, a drunk played by Dean Martin and an old man with a game leg (Walter Brennan), and a young gunslinger (Ricky Nelson) who had arrived in town with Chance's friend. The film, which was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry, also featured Angie Dickinson.

Howard Hawks would direct two other westerns that featured John Wayne and held "loose variations" to the story line of "Rio Bravo": "El Dorado", a 1966 feature that had Robert Mitchum in a similar role to Dean Martin's and James Caan adopting the Ricky Nelson role, and "Rio Lobo", a 1970 movie whose story line features a town under the control of a powerful rancher and John Wayne's character only has limited help at his side.

4. "Hotel Rwanda" tells the story of one man's fight to save his family and over a thousand refugees as extremists, from which population group, who perpetrated the Rwandan Genocide of 1994?

Answer: Hutu

After decades of violent strife between the Hutu and Tutsi peoples in Rwanda and Burundi, the Hutu Presidents of both countries were assassinated in 1994. Within hours of their plane being shot down, Hutu extremists stoked a campaign of genocide in Rwanda that led to the deaths of more than 800,000 people, most of them in the Tutsi minority.

"Hotel Rwanda" tells the story of Hutu hotelier Paul Rusesabagina's efforts to save his Tutsi family and the 1,268 souls who took refuge at the Hotel des Mille Collines.

5. In 1967, Walt Disney Productions made a film about an orphan cougar cub that was raised in captivity. What was the name of this lonesome cougar?

Answer: Charlie

6. Humphrey Bogart starred in the four classic movies below, but in which one does his character die being killed by bandits?

Answer: The Treasure of the Sierra Madre

Bogart played Fred Dobbs in "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" (1948). John Huston adapted and directed the movie from the 1927 novel of the same name by B. Traven. Dobbs and Bob Curtin (played by Tim Holt) are down on their luck Americans stuck in Mexico in 1925. They hear of gold existing in the Sierra Madres and set out to find it. They are successful with the help of an old prospector named Howard (played by Walter Huston, John Huston's father and the patriarch of the Huston family). Huston senior won an Academy award for Best Supporting actor for the movie. Paranoia and greed set in and Dobbs soon double crosses his partners shooting Curtin and leaving him for dead. Unfortunately for him, the bandits catch up to him and kill him before he can enjoy the gold they found.

7. Peggy Ashcroft won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in her role as Mrs. Moore in David Lean's 1984 drama, "A Passage to ____".

Answer: India

David Lean could not have asked for a more fitting finale to a glittering career, producing a film that critics hailed as his finest since "Lawrence of Arabia" (1962) that collected eleven Academy Award nominations. It would win two; Maurice Jarre for his wonderful score and the delightful Dame Peggy Ashcroft who, at 77 years of age, became one of the oldest winners of the award.

The story centres around Adela (Judy Davis) who sails to British Raj India and is assaulted while on an excursion to the Marabar Caves. Their guide Aziz is arrested sparking a hotbed of controversy that sees Aziz jailed and then taken to court. To reveal more would spoil the ending.

8. Into this melting pot comes a 1949 movie starring Bing Crosby, which was based on a Mark Twain novel called "A Connecticut (what) in King Arthur's Court"?

Answer: Yankee

This was one of my childhood favourite movies. Hank Martin, played by Bing Crosby, is a mechanic from the early 1900s who sustains a bump on the head that transports him back to Arthurian Britain, in the early 500s AD. He demonstrates his power using modern technology, including producing flame from matches and 'predicting' an eclipse. He (naturally) falls in love with Lady Alisande La Carteloise, played by Rhonda Fleming. Martin has a series of adventures and saves the kingdom before taking another knock to his head and waking up in his own time.

9. In a 2000 American action film, starring Jet Li and Aaliyah, who "Must Die"?

Answer: Romeo

"Romeo Must Die" is considered Jet Li's breakthrough role in the American film industry. The film was loosely based on Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet". Jet Li plays Han Sing, a former Chinese police officer who learns his brother has been murdered in the United States. Seeking retribution, Han heads to Oakland and takes on the Chinese and American mobs.

10. All of the movies in this quiz have titles that featured letters from the NATO phonetic alphabet. Identify which one of these four titles consists ONLY of letters from this alphabet and nothing else.

Answer: Whiskey Tango Foxtrot

Only "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot" is made up solely of NATO phonetic alphabet letters. Whiskey = W, Tango = T, Foxtrot = F.

"Luna Papa" - Papa is part of the alphabet (P), Luna is not.
"Alpha Dog" - Alpha is part of the alphabet (A), Dog is not. Alpha is the ATIS spelling. The normal spelling is Alfa. Dog was part of the Joint Army/Navy Phonetic Alphabet during WWII but was replaced by Delta in the NATO alphabet.
"Camp X-Ray" - X-Ray (spelled Xray) is part of the alphabet (X), Camp is not.

"Whiskey Tango Foxtrot" is a 2016 movie starring Tina Fey and was based on the Kim Barker memoir "The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan" (2011). The memoir and movie follow Barker (Fey) as she becomes a war correspondent in Afghanistan and Pakistan during Operation Enduring Freedom. As noted, the title of the film spells out WTF which is military slang for a phrase containing an expletive, meaning in more polite terms 'what in the world?' or 'what on earth?'. Basically it is a phrase of disbelief for the situation a soldier finds himself in.

The other NATO letters featured in this quiz are:
Q1 - Tango (T)
Q2 - Zulu (Z)
Q3 - Bravo (B)
Q4 - Hotel (H)
Q5 - Charlie (C)
Q6 - Sierra (S)
Q7 - India (I)
Q8 - Yankee (Y)
Q9 - Romeo (R)
