Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the movie "Gladiator", starring Russell Crowe, what were Maximus's last words, spoken after defeating the Emperor Commodus in a fight in the Coliseum arena?

Answer: "Lucius is safe."

These words were said to Lucilla, in reference to her son, who was, to his mother's terror, heir to the throne of Rome. Commodus threatened to kill him to force Lucilla to do what Commodus demanded - supporting him as emperor, refraining from helping Maximus free Rome, and giving him his own son and heir. Maximus' last words were to tell Lucilla that Commodus could no longer threaten or harm her son.

All of these quotes were said by Maximus in the moments before his death, after being stabbed by Commodus, but 'Lucius is safe' were his actual last words.
2. In the movie "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope", Obi-Wan-Kenobi was struck down in a fight with Darth Vader, while Luke Skywalker looked on. What were Obi-Wan-Kenobi's last living words?

Answer: "If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine."

This cryptic line was said to Darth Vader after Obi-Wan appeared to surrender the fight. Although never explained in the "Star Wars" movies, this meant that, if Darth Vader were to strike Obi-Wan down, he would become a "force ghost", and much more powerful than he was as a living Jedi.

Obi Wan, also known as Ben, was thought by many movie fans to have martyred himself to inspire Luke to defeat Darth Vader, and also so that he could assist him from beyond the grave.

Alec Guinness claimed that it was his idea to have Obi-Wan killed in the first "Star Wars" movie, as he disliked playing the role. George Lucas, however, has always denied this.
3. In "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix", what were Sirius Black's final words, said during the battle between the Order and the Death Eaters in the Ministry of Magic, before being killed by his cousin, Bellatrix Lestrange?

Answer: "Nice one, James."

This was said to Harry, after Harry successfully defended himself against a Death Eater. Without thinking, Sirius accidentally called Harry by his fathers' name. Sirius saw a lot of James in Harry, and people were always reminding him that he was not James. Despite how much Sirius protested that he knew this, perhaps, in his final words, he demonstrated just how much he didn't know.

During this fight scene, Sirius did also say "Get away from my godson!" to Lucius Malfoy, before punching him in the face, although this was right at the beginning of the fight.
4. In the movie "Leon", Leon tragically died blowing up himself, along with a building and several enemies, in an attempt to save twelve year old Mathilda. What were Leon's final words?

Answer: "This is from Mathilda."

This is said to the bad guy Stansfield as Leon hands him something. Stansfield then looks and discovers that is the pin from a grenade. Leon sacrificed himself to kill Stansfield and protect Mathilda, as Stansfield was hunting him and Mathilda to finish the job he started when he murdered her family.

According to the first draft of the script, Leon's full name was Leone Montana. Leon was played by Jean Reno, Mathilda was played by a young Natalie Portman, while the main bad guy, Stansfield, was played by Gary Oldman.
5. In "V For Vendetta", V, the main character, died after being shot numerous times in a viciously violent fight with Creedy and his henchmen, but what were V's final words?

Answer: "That's the most beautiful thing you could have ever given me."

These words were said to Evie, after she told him, crying, that she did not want him to die. Perhaps to a secretive outsider and outcast such as V, for somebody to care whether he lived or died really was the most amazing gift they could ever give.

In an early draft of the script, V's final words were actually "My love... Ave Atque vale...".
6. In "Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring", what were Boromir's final words, spoken to Aragorn/Strider after being shot by three arrows defending Merry and Pippin against Orcs from Isengard?

Answer: "I would have would have followed you, my brother...my captain...my king."

With these words, Boromir was accepting Aragorn's rightful position as King of Gondor, in place of Boromir's father, who was Steward of Gondor, and only a guardian of the throne. This was important to both Boromir and Aragorn, as Boromir had spent the majority of the movie insisting that Gondor neither had nor needed a king.

In the original books by J.R.R. Tolkein, Boromir actually died at the beginning of the second book, "The Two Towers".
7. In the movie "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest", what were Captain Jack Sparrow's final words before he was killed by the kraken?

Answer: "Hello beastie."

Captain Jack Sparrow said this, addressing the Kraken before it killed and consumed him. This was Jack's way of accepting that, by dying, he was, for once, about to sacrifice himself to help somebody else. This was because, if he died, the Kraken would stop hunting him and the rest of the characters, and the crew would be able to escape unharmed.

We all know, of course, that Jack didn't STAY dead. Will, Elizabeth, Barbossa and crew rescued him from Davy Jones' Locker in "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End."
8. In "Titanic", although we never actually saw his death on screen, Jack Dawson seemed to have said his goodbyes to Rose while waiting on a floating wardrobe door for a lifeboat to return and rescue them. What were Jack Dawson's final words?

Answer: "Never let go."

Although we never actually saw Jack's death on screen, these were the final words he spoke in the film.

These words were said to Rose towards the end of the movie, when she seemed to be giving up on any possibility of survival and started saying her goodbyes. Jack told her not to say goodbye, and that she would survive, and then, ironically, seemed to say his own goodbyes, despite telling Rose not to.
9. In "The Mummy"(1999), what was Imhotep's last line (spoken in Ancient Egyptian before turning back into a mummified corpse, after having his mortality restored and being stabbed by Rick O'Connell?

Answer: "Death is only the beginning."

Said to nobody in particular, Imhotep had also scratched these words into the inside of his coffin, after being buried alive thousands of years earlier. This showed how the character refused to accept his own death.

"Imhotep" was actually the architect who developed the first pyramids in ancient Egypt, notably the Pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara in approximately 2600 BC. His ability was such that he was later said to have descended from the gods. His name means "one who comes in peace".
10. In "Carry On Cleo", what were Julius Caesar's last words, after being fatally stabbed at the end of the film?

Answer: "Infamy! Infamy! They've all got it in for me!"

These famous words were cried out by Caesar, to nobody in particular (possibly a humourous cry for help) as he fled from his bodyguard, Bilius, who was trying to kill him. This was also the scene in which Caesar (played by Kenneth Williams) said the equally hilarious line "I may not be a very good live emperor but I'd be a worse one dead!"

Jon Pertwee, who played the Doctor in "Doctor Who", also played a small role as a soothsayer in this movie.
