Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first record to hit the number one spot in 1965 was performed by The Supremes. What was the title?

Answer: Come See About Me

'Come See About Me' was the third record in a run of five for The Supremes to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in the early part of the 1960s. This record originally hit the top spot in December 1964, regaining number one on January 16th 1965.

*Useless information* The Supremes released eight singles between 1961 and 1964 with not one of these charted in the Billboard top 20. The next seven releases gained them six number one hits.
2. According to Herman's Hermits who had 'a Lovely Daughter'?

Answer: Mrs Brown

'Mrs Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter' was the fifth single by Herman's Hermits and the first to reach number one in the US.
They also had their second (and last) US number one hit in 1965 with 'I'm Henry VIII I Am'.

*Useless information* Although both of these records are sung with a stylized 'cockney' accent, neither record was released as a single in the UK.
3. The first 'British invasion' record to reach the top spot in 1965 was on January 23rd. Which British female singer had a hit with 'Downtown'?

Answer: Petula Clark

'Downtown' is arguably Petula Clark's most succesful recording. It was a worldwide hit reaching Number one in the US, Australia, New Zealand, Rhodesia, South Africa and Canada. Petula also released versions recorded in French, Italian and Spanish which were equally as sucessful.

*Useless information* Petula Clark was only the second British female to reach the number one spot in the US (The first was Vera Lynn in 1952) and was the first British female singer to be awarded a Gold disc for sales of over one million copies of 'Downtown'.
4. A quirky British group had a number one Billboard hit with 'I'm Telling You Now'. The front man was Freddie Garrity, what was the name of his backing group? (Freddie and ...)

Answer: The Dreamers

Freddie and the Dreamers were a British band formed in 1963 in Manchester UK. Freddie Garrity was known for his 'trademark' eccentric behaviour, leaping and jumping around the stage whilst performing.

'I'm Telling You Now' was the group's only US number one recording.

*Useless information* Freddie Garrity used to wear a pair of 'horn rimmed' glasses on stage... these had no lenses in them.
5. Who 'Lost That Lovin' Feeling' when they reached number one in February 1965?

Answer: Righteous Brothers

The Righteous Brothers were a duo consisting of Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield, both former members of the American group The Paramours.

'You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling' was a record written by Barry Mann, Phil Spector and Cynthia Weil.

*Useless information* BMI - (the performing rights organisation which collects royalties on behalf of performers) - stated, in 1999, that 'You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling' had received more TV and radio plays than any other record in the 20th century.
6. Hitting the number one spot for three weeks in the summer of 1965 was a song performed by an American duo. Who performed the song that contained the following lyrics? "They say our love won't pay the rent Before it's earned, our money's all been spent I guess that's so, we don't have a pot But at least I'm sure of all the things we got"?

Answer: Sonny and Cher

Sonny and Cher Bono were a husband and wife American pop duo.

'I Got You Babe' was the only Billboard Hot 100 number one that Sonny and Cher, as a couple, ever achieved.

*Useless Information*. Sonny and Cher first started performing under the name "Caesar and Cleo". Although they recorded a few tracks they never acheived any recognition.
7. The Beach Boys only had one number one record in 1965 which track was this?

Answer: Help Me Rhonda

Despite being one of the most successful groups in the US the Beach Boys only achieved four number one Billboard Hot 100 singles.
8. September 1965 and Barry McGuire reaches number one on the Billboard 100 charts with one of my favourite protest songs. What word is missing from the title? 'Eve of _____'

Answer: Destruction

One of my favourite all time recordings. Written in 1965 by P. F. Sloan, who also penned hits for the Mamas and the Papas, Jan and Dean and Herman's Hermits, this was - in my opinion - one of the greatest protest songs of all time.

*Useless Information* according to Barry McGuire (http://barrymcguire.xanga.com/364332725/item/) The single was actually unfinished when it was released. The vocal track was placed on the record but was meant to be re-recorded and 'polished' unfortunately, or fortunately, a copy was leaked to a DJ working at KFWB in Los Angeles and the rest is history.
9. October the 2nd 1965 and The McCoys reached number one with 'Hang on Snoopy'.

Answer: False

The track is actually called 'Hang on Sloopy'. It is the official rock song of Ohio and is played before the fourth quarter of every football game played at Ohio State University.

*Useless Information* Originally the track was recorded by a group called 'The Vibrations' in 1964 and was entitled 'My Girl Sloopy' becoming a top thirty hit for the group.
10. Christmas time again and the the last number one of the year. Listed at number one on the 25th December 1965 was another British group, Singing 'Over and Over' what word is missing from the groups name? The Dave Clark ---.

Answer: Five

'Over and Over' was the only US number one for The Dave Clark Five and only reached number 45 in the UK.
