Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many teams took part in the group stages?

Answer: 32

Thirty two teams took their place at the top table of European football. The groups were made up of four teams in which each team would play each other twice, giving each team six matches. The top two at the end of the six match sequence would move on to the second round, the knock out stage.
2. Which nations supplied four clubs in the group stages?

Answer: England, Spain & Italy

England supplied Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United. The Spanish sides were Barcelona, Deportivo La Coruna, Real Madrid and Valencia. The Italian contingent were made up of AC Milan, Internazionale (aka Inter Milan), Juventus and Roma.
3. Did a team from Israel participate in the group stages?

Answer: Yes

Maccabi Tel Aviv played in Group C and had to face three of Europe's biggest names. The opponents were Ajax, Bayern Munich and Juventus who had won many European Cups/Champions League titles between them. Maccabi finished bottom of the group with just one win and a draw.
4. Group A comprised the French side and 2004 ECL finalists Monaco, four times champions Liverpool, Spanish club Deportivo La Coruna and Greek side Olympiakos. How did the League table look after each team had opened their accounts?

Answer: Liverpool top with three points

Liverpool started with a 2-0 home win over Monaco. The English side took the lead through the summer signing of Djibril Cisse on 22 minutes. Steven Gerrard and Luis Garcia exchange passes inside the Monaco half before Gerrard sent Cisse through on goal and the Frenchman gave keeper Roma no chance with a powerful right footed finish from inside the area. The second goal came in the 84th minute with the Czech striker Milan Baros confidently controlling Josemi's long pass on the edge of the area before turning Squillaci and scored with his left foot from close range.

The Olympiakos v Deportivo match ended in a disappointing 0-0 draw with very little being made in terms of goal scoring chances.
5. Group B started in one of the competitions most controversial moments when the Roma v Dynamo Kiev match was abandoned by referee Anders Frisk. It later came to light that Frisk had abandoned the game due to being hit by a missile thrown from the crowd which caused a nasty cut to his face. What was the score at half time, when the game was abandoned?

Answer: Roma v Dynamo Kiev 0-1

Kiev had an awful away record in Europe and were expected to be beaten again but on 29 minutes Goran Gavrancic scored with a stunning free kick from more than 40 yards that looped over the Roma players and landed high in the net. The Roma players were incensed at a number of tackles committed on them and the atmosphere was becoming very heated. Frisk had cautioned Kiev player Verpakovskis for a poor tackle two minutes after the goal. Roma were hell bent on kicking everything that moved and it was truely amazing that only Totti was added to the referee's notebook. However, Phillipe Mexes of Roma was red carded after kicking out at Verpakovskis at the half time whistle.

What followed was appalling scenes and the game was abandoned. After the review of the incident UEFA gave a 3-0 win to Kiev and ordered Roma to play their remaining home ties behind closed doors. Mexes was banned for three matches for his incident, and referee Anders Frisk went on to quit refereeing in March 2005 after a further unsavoury incident during the Barcelona v Chelsea second round knock out first leg tie.
6. Group B saw a fantastic 3-0 home win for Bayer Leverkusen over giants Real Madrid. The game was played at a high tempo in which Madrid dominated for long periods, but who opened the scoring on 39 minutes?

Answer: Jacek Krzynowek

Polish midfielder Krzynowek scored on 39 minutes. The Pole deservedly scored the goal after a corner was poorly cleared and the left midfield player hit a glorious long range shot, which hit the post and went in off Madrid keeper Casillas.

The second half saw Leverkusen subject Madrid to some serious tests and on 50 minutes Franca doubled Leverkusen's lead after David Beckham gave him too much space on the edge of the box and the Brazilian powered the ball past the flailing arms of Casillas. The third goal came five minutes later when Berbatov made the most of the easiest of opportunities after Pavon could only get a touch on Franca's left wing cross. The ball ballooned in the air and the Bulgarian striker tapped the ball into the empty net from two metres out.
7. Group C saw the same result at both venues, what was the outcome?

Answer: 0-1 wins for the away sides

Both matches were won by one goal and both away teams triumphed. In Amsterdam, Ajax faced one of the tournament favourites Juventus. The game was decided in the 42nd minute when Del Piero with the outside of his right foot played a delightful ball into the box which was held up by Camoranesi. He laid it back to Pavel Nedved who scored brilliantly, stabbing the ball into the top corner of the net, giving Maarten Stekelenburg no chance.

In Tel Aviv German side Bayern Munich won when Pantsil of Macabbi brought down Ze Roberto in the area and a penalty was awarded. On 64 minutes Roy Makaay scored from the penalty spot. The Dutch striker gently rolled the ball beyond Strauber, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.
8. Group D had two of the competition's most explosive goalscoring sides face each other in France. Lyon the champions of France faced the 1999 winners Manchester United and led 2-0 at half time, but how did the game end?

Answer: Lyon v Manchester United 2-2

On 35 minutes Juninho's free-kick from the right fell to Tim Howard through a crowd of defenders. The United goalkeeper failed to hold on to it and Cristiano Cris stabbed it into the back of the net. Then on the stroke of half time Lyon score again as Frau brilliantly clipped the ball beyond Howard with the outside of his right boot following a fine pass from Sylvain Wiltord.

Manchester United hit back in style in the second half with Giggs, on the right, playing a cross field pass with his left foot to Ronaldo, who crossed it in for Van Nistelrooy to head past Coupet from close range. Then five minutes later it was all square when Roy Keane cut in from the right, passed it to Ronaldo whose pass was deflected into Van Nistelrooy's path ten yards out. Coupet was helpless in the Lyon goal as the United forward grabbed his second of the night and United's equaliser.
9. An early strike in the Group D match between Turkish side Fenerbache and the Czech Republic's Sparta Prague decided this fixture. Was the 16th minute goal by Pierre Van Hooijdonk, the Dutch International, the only goal of the match?

Answer: Yes

A great ball was sent in from the Brazilian Alex, and a towering header from the Dutchman was directed brilliantly across the diving keeper and into the bottom corner. Fenerbache v Sparta Prague 1-0.
10. Match-day one for Groups A to D saw how many red cards?

Answer: 2

Servet Cetin of Fenerbahce was dismissed for a second yellow card of the game when he committed a foul near the Sparta penalty area. The other card was shown to Phillipe Mexes of Roma for kicking out at Verpakovskis of Kiev as the half time whistle was blown.
