5. PROFESSIONAL SPORTS: On May 27, 2015, at least six prominent officials of the governing body of which major sport were arrested, under indictment by the US Department of Justice, for crimes which included bribery and fraud?

Answer: FIFA - Football (soccer)

On May 27, 2015, indictments issued in the USA charged ten officials of FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) with crimes growing out of schemes to influence the awarding of FIFA World Cup matches to sponsoring countries, the awarding of game broadcasts to certain telecommunication networks, and the arrangement of sponsorship deals with equipment manufacturers.

The USA took jurisdiction for these crimes because the illegal transactions were conducted in US dollars. The crimes were to be prosecuted under laws heretofore used to bring down Mafia organizations and drug cartels: the offenses included bribery, racketeering, money laundering, and fraud. Of the ten indicted FIFA officials, six were arrested at a luxury hotel in Zurich, Switzerland, where they were attending a FIFA meeting. FIFA had been suspected of all manner of corrupt practices for many years; but these prosecutions were one of only a few instances involving the lodging of actual criminal charges. US officials vowed the indictments would not be the last brought from these criminal practices.
