1.18/19 "A Voice in the Wilderness" Quiz

At the beginning of this episode, Dr. Tasaki is investigating the earthquakes that have been occurring on the planet, since there has previously been no record of tectonic activity. He tends to be a little overzealous in his research, even to the point of disobeying instructions meant to insure the safety of himself and his crew.

This is the first episode where they actually mention the name of the planet...probably because the planet was never of any actual interest before, nor had it any involvement in the plot.

Talia and Sinclair are waiting for the transport tube. Talia says: "It seems like every time I get into the tube, Mr. Garibaldi's there. It's like he *knows*." Sinclair: "Talia, Mr. Garibaldi is many things, but he's not omniscient." [Tube opens and Garibaldi is there looking rather smug] Talia: "I think I'll take the stairs." Sinclair: "I think I'll join you."

Answer: G'Kar

G'Kar is not present at the negotiations, which Londo enjoyed (probably since he has had to negotiate with him a lot recently), so they have a conversation about him behind his back. Londo: "What a pleasure it is to deal with someone reasonable. Negotiations are so much more enjoyable when certain individuals are not here to interfere." A little later in the conversation...Delenn: "I would suggest that there is a difference between being unreasonable and being angry. Ambassador G'Kar is angry most of the time, but even the greatest anger fades with time." Londo: "My dear Ambassador Delenn, I'm sure that for you this is true, but for G'Kar and his people; they will do all that they can to destroy us, until the universe itself decays and collapses. If the Narns all stood together in one place and hated, all at the same time, that hatred could fly across dozens of light-years and reduce Centauri Prime to a ball of ash. That's how much they hate us."

Varn appeared in hologram form to Sinclair in his quarters and Londo in a hallway. Varn calls out to Draal as a disembodied voice outside of Draal's quarters. Delenn is present when Draal hears the voice, but does not hear it herself. Later, when Delenn, Londo and Draal are meeting about the situation, Delenn says: "Strange. I wonder why he appeared just to you [Londo], Draal and the Commander." Draal: "Perhaps because we are most familiar with the third principle of sentient life."

Garibaldi explains that his girlfriend was named Lise Hampton. Later in the series we learn that she marries William Edgars. It seems that the two of them are not fated to be together, but after Edgars dies, she finally gets back together with Garibaldi, and eventually marries him (after putting him through de-tox).

Garibaldi asks Talia to help him get a message through to Lise on Mars. Garibaldi: "The Psi Corps has an intelligence and training operation in Syria Planum." Talia: "How did you know about the center? That's supposed to be classified." Garibaldi: "It is, but it has never stopped me before."

Answer: She didn't want him to go to Babylon 5.

Garibaldi explains to Talia that even though their relationship was rocky, Lise thought that they had finally gotten it right...then Garibaldi decides to go to Babylon 5. There relationship ended when he left. This is more fully explained in Garibaldi's flashback in "Babylon Squared" -- Lise: "I don't understand you Michael. We've got a good life here, we've got history. You have met this Sinclair character twice and now you are off to Babylon 5, just like that. Doesn't what we have mean anything to you?...I think you've got something to prove, that somehow maybe taking this job, will mean the last five years didn't happen, but I'm part of those years, Michael, and I will not go to Babylon 5 with you.

It's got to be one or the other."

Londo (to Draal and Delenn): "Six thousand years of recorded history, a history that includes remarkable composers, astonishing symphonies, but what is the one song that half of them sing to their children generation after generation? You put your right hand in; you put your right hand out. You put your whole self in and you turn yourself about. You do the hokey-pokey; you give a little shout. That's...what it's all about.

It doesn't mean anything. I have been studying it for seven days. I had the computer analyze it. I swear to you: it does not mean A *thing*!"

Here's the full quote. That's how much they hate *us*." Sinclair: "You don't have to respond in kind." Londo: "Of course we do.

It is a natural law. Physics tells us that for every action, there must be an equal and opposite reaction. They hate us, we hate them, they hate us back and so, here we are, victims of mathematics."

Here is the full quote said by Ivanova after Tasaki has disobeyed orders and entered the planet's atmosphere: "And just one more thing. On your trip back I'd like you to take the time to learn the Babylon 5 Mantra: 'Ivanova is always right. I will listen to Ivanova. I will not ignore Ivanova's recommendations. Ivanova is God. And if this ever happens again, Ivanova will personally rip your lungs out.' Babylon Control out...Civilians! [Looks up] I was just kidding about the God part -- no offense."

This is after Ivanova and Sinclair have made it through the planet's defenses and booby traps and are walking through the core of the Great Machine. Ivanova: "Commander?" Sinclair: "Yeah?" Ivanova: "I think I've gotta go to the bathroom." Sinclair: "Tell me about it."

Captain Ellis Pierce arrives armed to the teeth at Babylon 5 on orders to secure the situation. Sinclair does not appreciate his arrival or his approach to the situation. Pierce: "I don't know if you appreciate how messy this situation can get." Sinclair: "I appreciate the fact that we had this situation under control and quiet
until you blew in here with a heavy cruiser. Now everybody's going to
wonder what's going on."

Ivanova says that the planet will blow in less than 48 hours, and Garibaldi says that it will take at least three days to evactuate the station...meaning everyone will not be able to get off in time. Later on, Garibaldi and Sinclair are evaluating the situation. Sinclair: "One last thing: a favor. If we have to evacuate, you know we'll never get everyone off the station. Ambassadors, women and children, civilians go first.

Some of the command staff will have to stay on board, until...I'd appreciate it if you could make sure Ivanova gets on the last ship out.

She'll want to stay, but she's got her whole career ahead of her." Garibaldi: "Understood. She'll be on it if I have to drug her and toss her in before the doors close."

Londo: "An Earth war cruiser parked alongside the station. Mysterious trips to the planet beneath us. Rumors that you have found someone down there and brought him back here. This to you is status quo, yes? You must lead a very interesting life." Ivanova: "Ambassador. Do you really want to know what's going on down there right now?" Londo: "Yes, absolutely." Ivanova: "Boom. Boom, boom, boom. Boom, boom. BOOM! Have a nice day."

Answer: 500 years

An alien ship approaches the station, scans the computer database of Babylon 5 and the Hyperion and makes contact. They are of the same race as Varn, and they say that they have been searching for the planet for 500 years.

When Varn learns of the ship of people from his own race that have arrived, he says: "No. Outcast. Violent. My people cast them out centuries ago. Signal was not meant for them. Was put here to hide from them. Given to me when the rest of my people died. Sacred trust, legacy for the future. I am guardian, protector. I live in the heart of the machine. We are one. 500 of your years have I waited in the machine."

Answer: Tasaki

Tasaki gets only as far as the upper atmosphere, although he is the one that discovers the fissure that leads to the interior. Ivanova goes down with Sinclair and they retrieve Varn. Delenn, Draal and Londo take Varn back down to the planet, where Draal takes Varn's place in the machine. Garibaldi follows them down to the planet in a shuttle.

Draal: "All my life, I have searched for a way to serve others. To me, there is no higher calling, no greater destiny than to live for another and, if necessary, to die for another, to somehow make the world a better place. I had done all I could on my world. I came looking for a reason, a way to live out my remaining years with direction and purpose.

Here I have found it! I will save lives. The wonders of this place will take centuries to explore. Let my life have meaning. Help me to do what we both know must be done." Later, after Draal has taken his place, Garibaldi and Delenn have a conversation on Delenn's choice to not inform the command staff of their plan. Garibaldi: "When you figured out that someone was going to have to take Varn's place down there, why didn't you come to us and let us handle it?" Delenn: "Because if I had, I know in my heart that Commander Sinclair would be the one down there right now.

He's looking for a purpose, but his destiny lies elsewhere." It appears that both Delenn and Garibaldi know that Sinclair is looking for a purpose ("Infection").

Answer: Franz

At long last, Garibaldi is able to get in touch with Lise, who is in the hospital for the injuries she received during the riots. Garibaldi wants to patch things up between them, but she tells him that she is married to a nice guy named Franz and is expecting a baby. Garibaldi later comments: "Franz? What the hell kind of a name is Franz?"

Answer: Cpt. Pierce

When the alien ship arrives, it gives Babylon 5 and the Hyperion an ultimatum: they must leave the planet within 10 hours, or they will be destroyed. Not one to be threatened, Pierce responds with another ultimatum. Ivanova says the above line to Sinclair in response.

Londo volunteers to help Delenn and Draal return Varn to the planet, since Varn had also called out to him for help. Delenn accepts the offer and says: "You can be of great service, Ambassador, if you are willing to dare greatly." Londo replies: "You are talking to the Centauri that led the raid on Frallus 12. Granted, it was a long time ago, but perhaps it is time to return to old habits." Londo flies them down to the planet in his personal flyer, apparently having the time of his life. Ivanova, not knowing that Londo is flying, comments: "My God. Whoever's piloting that shuttle's a madman!" Unfortunately, Londo is not entirely competent and mutters the above line while trying to land the ship.

This is from the conversation between Londo and Ivanova where he is trying to figure out what is really happening on the station. This conversation ends in one of Ivanova's classic 'BOOM' statements (quoted in an earlier question).
