Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The episode opens with a flashback to that fateful day 14 years ago when a group of A500 artificial lifeforms went rogue, destroying the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards on Mars. On what special day, commemorating an event from the year 2063, did this happen?

Answer: First Contact Day

'First Contact Day' is an event witnessed in the 1996 film "Star Trek: First Contact" in which the crew of the "TNG" Enterprise go back in time to stop the Borg from preventing first contact with the Vulcans (and assimilating the Earth).

In "Maps and Legends" (as well as the "Short Treks" episode "Children of Mars") we see the celebrations for 'First Contact Day' underway (or at least referenced) when the attack by the synths occurs. A specific android, designation F-8, is introduced in this episode with Data-like skin and eye colouring, but a much inferior model, unable to grasp humour or social interaction to the level that Data demonstrated.

We see F-8 undergo some kind of change (his eyes flicker electronically), after which he begins to operate the computer to lower the planet's orbital defenses. When his human coworkers try to stop him, he kills them all, and then himself.
2. At Château Picard, Jean-Luc and his Romulan housekeepers Laris and Zhaban look at the recording of the attack in San Francisco that claimed Dahj's life. Zhaban says that it is the work of the Romulan secret police - the Tal Shiar - but Laris believes that it was a different, legendary subsect of the Tal Shiar... called what?

Answer: Zhat Vash

Laris and Zhaban (portrayed by Orla Brady and Jamie McShane, respectively) are Picard's housekeepers while also being long-time friends and confidants. In the past, Laris was a Tal Shiar agent whose handler was Zhaban's mother... and it was from her that Laris heard of the existence of the Zhat Vash.

The Zhat Vash is so secretive (according to Laris), that even their actual existence is in question; Zhaban believes them to be nothing more than a myth. Even so, something about the whole situation (especially as regards the pursuit of a synthetic lifeform) leads her to believe the attackers were the Zhat Vash.

Of course, in case you missed it, Patrick Stewart has reprised the role of Jean-Luc Picard.
3. Picard and Laris beam into Dahj's apartment to find clues about her twin sister Soji, but everything has been scrubbed clean, both physically and digitally. They leave without finding any information regarding Soji's whereabouts.

Answer: False

While there is no physical evidence of the attack that happened (in "Remembrance") and even the digital record of what happened has been erased and scrubbed through saturating the room with antileptons. Even trying to find a record of contact between Dahj and Soji in Dahj's digital assistant proves nigh impossible, as the index sorting the data was deleted.

Laris is able, however, to find records of Soji contacting Dahj, and determines that the messages originated off-planet. No details about where, but it gives them a place to begin their search. Picard decides that the best next step would be to locate Bruce Maddox, the cyberneticist who created Dahj and Soji.
4. On the Borg cube 'Romulan Reclamation Site', Soji Asha and the Romulan she met at the end of "Remembrance" (Narek) are in an intimate relationship. While speaking together of life aboard the cube, what term does Soji insist on calling it?

Answer: The Artifact

'The Artifact' is a Borg cube that was severed from the Collective after an incident with two Tal Shiar vessels (details revealed in a later episode). Although located in Romulan space and under Romulan oversight, the Artifact has multiple species working in conjunction on different projects - some involving Borg technology, and some involving reclaiming the Borg drones themselves.

Isa Briones played the part of Soji Asha while her Romulan lover Narek was acted by Harry Treadaway.
5. On Earth, Picard begins to look for the means to get off-planet. His first thought is Starfleet, and he starts with a visit from a physician with a view to get medical clearance. On which starship did Dr. Moritz Benayoun and Picard serve together?

Answer: USS Stargazer

Jean-Luc Picard served as the Captain of the USS Stargazer for 22 years, during which Dr. Benayoun was the chief medical officer for at least one posting (number of years unknown). With the idea of seeking reinstatement with Starfleet, Picard hoped for Dr. Benayoun to be willing to 'fudge the numbers', if required.

As it happens, the doctor assures Picard that in nearly every category, he is at or above the standards required for interstellar travel. In one area, however, Picard has a problem - an abnormality in the parietal lobe in his brain. At this point, Dr. Benayoun can't say what, specifically, it could lead to, but none of the potential outcomes has a good ending.

Dr. Benayoun was portrayed by David Paymer.
6. Picard travels to Starfleet Headquarters to seek reinstatement and command of a small ship. After explaining his reasons to Fleet Admiral Clancy, what is her response?

Answer: She refuses and tells him to go home

It was actually a bit shocking to have the Fleet Admiral respond so vehemently to Picard, using profanity not typically associated with a "Star Trek" show. She rips into him about his hubris and the gall of asking for anything from Starfleet after just doing a television interview in which he disparaged Starfleet for their response to the Romulan disaster (their sun going supernova).

Fleet Admiral Clancy was portrayed by Ann Magnuson.
7. Soji is preparing to enter the 'gray zone' work space on the Borg cube, listening to the checkpoint supervisor stress the safety protocols. Everyone must wear a security badge, and is told specifically to do what if the badge starts to blink green?

Answer: Run

While the Borg cube (and all its Borg inhabitants) has been severed from the Collective, there are still a lot of unknowns regarding the Borg and if, somehow, that connection were to be reestablished, it would be disastrous for everyone on board.

The supervisor says it simply, "While in the gray zone, you are likely to encounter former members of the Borg Collective. Please maintain a safe distance. And if your gradient badge starts to blink green... run!"
8. Fleet Admiral Clancy contacts Commodore Oh to report on what Picard did and what he asked for. What position does Commodore Oh, a Vulcan, hold in Starfleet?

Answer: Director of Starfleet Security

Commodore Oh (played by Tamlyn Tomita) follows up her conversation with Clancy by contacting another Starfleet officer by the name of Lieutenant Rizzo (portrayed by Peyton List). It soon becomes apparent that both of them are moles who are part of the Zhat Vash and are the ones behind the very things that Picard was trying to warn Clancy about.

Oh has worked her way up to the position of Director of Starfleet Security and is actually a Romulan/Vulcan hybrid. And Lieutenant Rizzo, seemingly a normal human, is really a surgically-altered Romulan.
9. In an effort to secure aid with his plan, Picard seeks out a former colleague by the name of Raffi Musiker. The problem with this, though, is that she wants nothing to do with him. What does Picard say to persuade her to listen?

Answer: "Secret Romulan assassins are operating on Earth."

Zhaban suggests that Picard could reach out to his Enterprise senior staff, such as Riker, Worf, or La Forge. Jean-Luc responds that he though about it, but ultimately decided against putting them at risk, knowing that they would jump at the chance.

When Picard finds Raffi at her home, she is not pleased to see him, brandishing a weapon in his direction and telling him that she doesn't want to hear anything he has to say. In response, as he turns to go, Picard says, "Secret Romulan assassins are operating on Earth." This piques her interest enough that she asks him if the bottle of wine he is carrying is the '86 vintage, giving enough of an invitation for him to continue.

Raffaela 'Raffi' Musiker was played by Michelle Hurd.
10. Narek is holographically visited by Starfleet officer Lt. Rizzo, who is working as a Romulan spy (disguised as a human) and checks in on his progress with 'the abomination'. What is Rizzo's relationship to Narek?

Answer: Sister

Both Rizzo and Narek are part of the Zhat Vash, working to discover the location of the 'nest', where more of the android 'abominations' are hidden away in their own colony. Rizzo wonders whether Narek's approach at finding the information (being intimate with Soji) will yield results, and threatens to come in person to handle things her own way. During their conversation, she refers to Narek as 'baby brother's.
