Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Broken Pieces" opens with a flashback to a group of Zhat Vash, led by Nedar (Commodore Oh), experiencing a vision of the devastation wrought by artificial lifeforms long ago. What was their name for this vision, warning them against the return of the Destroyers?

Answer: The Admonition

This flashback takes place in the year 2385 (fourteen years ago); shortly before the attack on Mars by the synths in April. This event was the catalyst that drove the plan to stop the further development of artificial life in the galaxy, as Nedar answers the question of how and where they can begin: "On the world the humans call Mars."

The only other survivors of experiencing "The Admonition" were Narissa (portrayed by Peyton List) and her aunt Ramdha, who we previously met on the (Borg cube) Artifact, played by Rebecca Wisocky. Tamlyn Tomita played the part of Commodore Oh (Nedar).
2. What is "The Conclave of Eight"?

Answer: An octonary star system

When she originally heard the name, Raffi Musiker thought that the Conclave of Eight was the name of the group behind the attack on Mars. She was close, but didn't quite hit the mark. The Conclave of Eight referred to a unique octonary star system, also called the Eightfold Stars, where the planet was located on which the Zhat Vash discovered the Admonition.

The planet is named Aia, but is called the "Grief Planet," discovered by the Romulans centuries previously. They discovered the memory repository left behind by the synthetics that had destroyed the civilization that had created them. The repository was meant for other synthetics to be able to follow or contact the original synthetic lifeforms, but the Romulans who experienced it saw it only as a warning against synthetic life (the Admonition).

Raffi Musiker was portrayed by Michelle Hurd.
3. With Captain Rios and La Sirena on their way to collect Picard and Soji Asha at Nepenthe, Elnor is left behind on the Artifact. How does he escape capture by the Romulans?

Answer: He is rescued by Seven of Nine

At the end of the previous episode ("Nepenthe"), Elnor was left hiding on the Borg cube, having just witnessed Narissa strike a killing blow against Hugh. He sent a message to the Fenris Rangers, trying to contact Seven of Nine.

Now, the Romulan soldiers have tracked him down and Elnor is fighting for his life, partially stunned by a grenade as the centurions attack. He holds his own for a bit, but is soon restrained. Just when it seems as though he is done for, phaser blasts take out the soldiers holding him, fired by Seven as she arrives in the nick of time. Between the two of them, they dispatch the remaining Romulans.

Elnor was played by Evan Evagora, while Jeri Ryan portrayed Seven of Nine.
4. Back on La Sirena, Picard surprises everyone by asking to be taken to Deep Space 12. He contacts Admiral Clancy at Starfleet Command and asks for help. Does Admiral Clancy support him?

Answer: Yes

When Picard asks to go to DS12, Soji is upset, believing that Picard has gone back on his word to take her to her homeworld. He explains that she has to trust him, and is only going to DS12 because they won't be able to get to her home without Starfleet support, given the nature of the enemy.

Contacting Fleet Admiral Clancy, Picard explains what has happened, and that his fears had come true regarding the threat from the Zhat Vash. Picard is blunt in telling her that this is a job for Starfleet, protecting beings (the synthetics) who have a right to life and liberty. In turn, Clancy tells him to shut up and assures him that a squadron would come to DS12 in support.

Admiral Clancy was portrayed by Ann Magnuson, and Jean-Luc Picard by (of course) Patrick Stewart.
5. On the bridge, Raffi is sharing her concerns about Soji with Captain Rios when she discovers that she is actually just talking to one of his Emergency Holograms, complete with Irish brogue. Which one?

Answer: Enoch (navigation)

Enoch, the Emergency Navigational Hologram, was activated to navigate La Sirena to DS12, and Captain Rios slipped away unnoticed to his quarters. Only once Enoch responded verbally to Raffi did she actually notice that Rios had left.

Each of Rios' holographic crew is a version of Rios himself, but with a different accent and style (beard, hair, clothing, etc.). In the case of Enoch, he speaks with an Irish brogue, and is a little more cleanly coiffed.

Captain Rios (and all of his holographic versions) were played by Santiago Cabrera.
6. On the Artifact, who reactivates the Borg cube's systems and begins the regeneration process?

Answer: Seven of Nine

After having rescued Elnor, he and Seven are trying to figure out a way to fight the Romulans. They enter the queencell (from where Picard and Soji had transported to Nepenthe), where Seven is able to access control of the Borg cube. She changes a setting that allows the cube to begin regenerating.

Unfortunately, this prompts Narissa to begin executing xBs. When Elnor notices their lifesigns winking out on the 3D monitor, Seven considers taking the next, more dangerous step.
7. After seeing Soji, Captain Rios sequestered himself in his cabin, and has gotten drunk while reliving memories of the events that led to his former captain's death. What was this captain's name?

Answer: Alonzo Vandermeer

Raffi gathers all of Captain Rios' Emergency Holograms and between them all, figures out the gist of what is bothering Rios. She finds him in his cabin, and is able to draw out the story:

Nine years previously, Rios had been serving on the USS Ibn Majid, when they had a 'first contact' in the Vayt system. When Captain Vandermeer reported to Starfleet that they were synthetic lifeforms, he was ordered to kill them and cover it up by a "black flag directive" from Commodore Oh. Rios witnessed Vandermeer shoot them both, then turn the phaser on himself.

One of the synthetics was named Jana, who looked nearly identical to Soji and her sister Dahj.
8. When Agnes Jurati regains consciousness from her ingestion of noranium hydride, who confronts her about killing Bruce Maddox?

Answer: Jean-Luc Picard

When Jurati wakes up, Picard immediately tells her that they are on the way to DS12, where she will be turned over to the authorities for the murder of Bruce Maddox. When she just nods in misery, Picard looks crestfallen, receiving this confirmation of her guilt. Jurati goes on to explain about how Commodore Oh did a mind meld with her and showed her the Admonition, which is also a revelation (that Oh was actually of the Tal Shiar).

Jurati explains how she has had a change of heart, despite the forcefulness of what Commodore Oh did to her. The noranium hydride did what it was supposed to do... destroy the viridium tracker. And even though the threat of the synthetics still exists, she can't help but be in awe and marvel at the creation that is Soji Asha.
9. How does Seven regain control of the Borg cube?

Answer: She forms a new collective

With the knowledge of the location of the synth planet, Narissa is already in the process of retreating from the Artifact, but in the process intends to kill all of the xBs as she does so. In order to prevent that, Seven forms a new collective from the queencell, with herself as the head, and that is enough to drive the Romulans from the ship.

When all of the drones start coming online, Narissa orders them all vented into space, which she manages to accomplish before she is taken down by a group of surviving xBs. They are unable to capture her, though, as she transports to a ship in the waiting Romulan fleet.

Seven, having taken control of the cube, is able to disconnect from the collective (something she wasn't sure she would be able to do when she created it).
10. Having figured out the truth behind the Conclave of Eight and the Zhat Vash's mission, Raffi tells the rest of the crew of La Sirena. Upset, Soji takes control of the ship and opens the nearest Borg transwarp conduit to take them to the Vayt system and her home planet.

Answer: False

Soji *attempts* to take over the ship, and it looks like she will be able to do whatever she wants, locking out the others behind a force field, but Captain Rios has a pre-set security code that shuts down the ship and wrenches control back from Soji (he sings a Spanish lullaby, "Arroz con leche").

A short discussion convinces Soji that she doesn't have to act rashly, and that her plan to take the Borg transwarp conduit is good... but that Captain Rios will fly the ship (and prevent problems such as not setting up a structural integrity field or a chroniton field, "gravimetric shear be damned!"
