Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Nepenthe" opens with a flashback to Dr. Agnes Jurati at the Daystrom Institute, shortly after meeting Picard (in episodes 1 & 2). Who visits her and convinces her to join Picard's mission?

Answer: Commodore Oh

Commodore Oh (Tamlyn Tomita) has already been revealed to the audience as a secret member of the Romulan Tal Shiar and the Zhat Vash, bent on destroying all synthetic life. When she visits Dr. Jurati (Alison Pill), she uses a mind meld to give Agnes a vision of 'The Admonition' - a warning against synthetic life from hundreds of thousands of years ago.

Seeing the apocalyptic vision causes Agnes to willingly go along with Oh's plan, which we already know resulted in her killing Dr. Bruce Maddox. Agnes is also given an edible tracking device to swallow, and this results in complications for the events of this episode.
2. Jean-Luc Picard and Soji Asha appear on the planet Nepenthe, teleported long-distance from the Borg Queen's chamber in the Artifact (Borg cube). They are very quickly met by a young girl who threatens them with a bow and arrow. Picard knows her, and calls her by what name?

Answer: Kestra

Almost immediately after materializing on Nepenthe, Picard and Soji are met by Kestra (Lulu Wilson), who is dressed up like a native, complete with bow and arrow. She points the bow at Picard, and he is quick to point out to her that she should aim at his head instead of his heart, since his heart is made of duritanium. In the moment she makes no indications that she knows who Picard is, but once he calls her by name and asks if her parents are about, she lowers her bow and leads them to her home (and parents).

Patrick Stewart, of course, plays the inimitable Jean-Luc Picard, while Soji Asha is portrayed bi Isa Briones.
3. The young girl turns out to be the daughter of Will Riker and Deanna Troi, two of Picard's former bridge crew aboard the USS Enterprise (his first officer and counselor). What are they in the middle of doing when the visitors arrive?

Answer: Making pizza

Riker (Jonathan Frakes) and Troi (Marina Sirtis) have a lovely log cabin-style modern home (complete with protective shields) in the countryside away from anybody else. They are in the process of making supper (fresh garden tomatoes and basil for wood-fired pizza) when Picard and Soji arrive with Kestra. Troi meets Picard on the front step and gives him a big hug before acknowledging why he has come. With her empathic abilities, she quickly understands the full import of Picard's mission, and both she and her husband are quick to offer whatever is needed.
4. Riker reminds Picard about the warning he gave when Picard got involved with the Romulan supernova crisis years ago. What did Riker refer to as 'Newton's Fourth Law of Thermodynamics'?

Answer: "No good deed goes unpunished."

The funny thing here, of course, is that Newton didn't actually come up with the Laws of Thermodynamics. They were established by different scientists, and accepted by consensus. Newton described the Laws of Motion.

Either way, Riker's assertion seems apt enough. Picard had the best of intentions in his efforts to aid the Romulan people after their sun went supernova, and now the Romulans (specifically the Zhat Vash) are the cause of his current predicament.
5. With Picard gone from the Artifact, the Romulans release the tractor beam holding La Sirena. Who pilots the ship that follows Picard's crew?

Answer: Narek

After romancing Soji and convincing her to undergo the Romulan meditation 'Zhal Makh,' Narek (Harry Treadaway) learned about her homeworld and then tried to kill her (in the previous episode "The Impossible Box"). When Picard helps Soji escape the Artifact, Narissa (Peyton List) sends Narek to follow La Sirena, assuming that they will try to rendezvous with the two fugitives.

Captain Rios (Santiago Cabrera) is sure that he can lose the Romulan, so is not concerned about being followed, but what he doesn't realize is that Narek has the advantage of having a tracking device to follow (the one implanted within Dr. Jurati).
6. Elnor, who followed Picard onto the Artifact in the previous episode to protect him, is left behind when La Sirena leaves.

Answer: True

After Picard and Soji transported away from the Artifact, Elnor (who had aided his escape) was left behind, along with Hugh (the ex-Borg from "Star Trek: The Next Generation"). This left them to face Narissa's anger at having her plans (somewhat) thwarted.

Narissa takes out her frustrations by executing the xBs that Hugh had helped in the Borg Reclamation Project. Witnessing this travesty, Elnor (as a Qowat Milat who supports lost causes) chooses to remain behind and help Hugh with his fight.

Hugh and Elnor make their way back to the queencell, and Hugh declares his intent to wrest control of the Borg Cube away from the Romulans. Narissa, hearing him say this, uses it as an excuse to void the protection that Hugh had as part of the negotiated Federation/Romulan venture, and she kills Hugh with a thrown dagger before Elnor can stop her.

Elnor was portrayed by Evan Evagora, while Hugh was played by Jonathan Del Arco.
7. On Nepenthe, Soji is bemused to learn that their hosts often speak to each other in various made-up languages, created by Will and Deanna's (now deceased) son, Thaddeus. From what disease did Thaddeus die?

Answer: Mendaxic neurosclerosis

It was because of Thaddeus that Riker and Troi came to Nepenthe in the first place. The planet has various regenerative properties that promote plant growth and healing, but it was not enough. Mendaxic neurosclerosis was already known to be treatable, but only through culturing infected cells in an active positronic matrix. With synthetic life banned following the 2385 attack on Mars, there were no positronic matrices available to save Thaddeus' life.

Soji learns from Deanna and Kestra that Thaddeus had an active imagination, creating languages for various invented peoples, like the 'Wild Girls of the Woods,' whose language he called 'Viveena.' He even created a dictionary for the language, which Soji quickly learns, enabling her to speak the language with Kestra.

That was only one of twelve languages and cultures that Thaddeus created, to varying levels.
8. Soji finally decides to trust Picard and his friends, and tells them about her experience with the Romulan Zhal Makh, which revealed her memory of her home planet. What word does she name it, borrowed from Thaddeus' invented language, that means 'home'?

Answer: Ardani

As Soji describes the vision that she had (two red moons, dark as blood, and surrounded by lightning), Kestra sends the description to a local family friend (and former starship captain) Rupert Crandall, who responds that it is a planet in the Ghulion system in the Vayt sector, and only has a numerical designation (no name).

Inspired by the story of Thaddeus, who grew up on starships without a home planet of his own, Soji chooses to name her planet 'Ardani,' which was what Thaddeus named his imaginary homeworld.

The other three answer options all also mean 'home,' but these are real languages: domum is Latin, maison is French, and casa is Spanish.
9. Suffering from a crisis of conscience, Dr. Agnes Jurati self-administers a toxic substance that destroys the biological tracker implanted within her. What substance?

Answer: Noranium hydride

When Captain Rios realizes that he is unable to lose the tailing ship, he confides in Agnes that he is suspicious of Raffi. But Agnes, knowing the truth of the situation, chooses to rectify the situation. As she prepares a hypospray of noranium hydride, the computer warns of its dangerous neurotoxic effects.

When she administers the dose, she immediately falls into a coma and is near death.
10. As Picard and Soji are being picked up by La Sirena, which has finally made it to Nepenthe, to whom does Elnor sends a request for help?

Answer: The Fenris Rangers

Having escaped from Narissa, Elnor finds a comm chip amongst Hugh's things that is like the one Seven of Nine gave to Picard, capable of contacting the Fenris Rangers (with whom Seven works). He uses it and sends a message for help.

Meanwhile, Picard and Soji say their farewells to Will, Deanna, and Kestra before beaming up to La Sirena. Picard thanks Riker for not trying to talk him out of his mission, and asks Riker if he ever thought of returning to Starfleet. In his answer we learn that Riker is still a member of Starfleet's active reserve, and would need a good reason to return (can you say foreshadowing?).
