Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who shot Combo at the beginning of the episode, when he was on a corner lot waiting for customers?

Answer: A boy on a bike

Combo was one of Jesse's dealers, along with Skinny Pete and Badger. He was standing on a vacant corner lot when a car pulled up. He asked the occupants what they wanted, but they just stared at him and then drove off. They ended up parking across the street from him, which made him nervous, so he called Skinny Pete on his phone and asked for help. Meanwhile a young boy on a bicycle was riding around the lot, and Combo told him to leave, thinking that there might be trouble from the men in the car.

But the trouble turned out to come from the kid who shot him when Combo turned to look at him. Combo tried to run away, but the boy shot at him several more times, and Combo collapsed in the street.
2. After Combo's death, Skinny Pete quit Jesse's crew, leaving Jesse with no dealers. Where was Badger?

Answer: California

Skinny Pete was shaken by Combo's death. He blamed it on the fact that they had moved into new territory per Jesse's instructions and that they no longer had "street cred". He told Jesse that they had respect on the street back when people thought Jesse had killed an addict with an ATM, but now "the whole town" knew the truth about that incident, so Pete told Jesse that he was out.

He said that Badger was "laying low out in Cali", and later, when he called Jesse after Jesse missed Combo's funeral, Pete mentioned that "even Badger came all the way from Fresno".
3. Jesse was upset about Combo's death and told Jane to leave so that he could do drugs. What did Jane do instead?

Answer: Joined him

Jesse took Combo's death pretty hard, and it didn't help that Walt seemed more concerned with the inconvenience than the loss of life. When Jesse initially called Walt to inform him of Combo's death, Walt asked him, "Which one was he?" Jesse responded, "You did NOT just say that to me" and hung up on him. Later when Jesse was sitting with Jane, she told him she knew he was a drug dealer because he paid for his rent in cash and used an alias.

He told her that one of his friends was killed because of him and then said he wanted to do drugs and that she should leave since she was in a recovery program.

She asked him to come with her to a meeting but he turned her down and became bitter when she told him that doing drugs wouldn't help. She started to leave but changed her mind and went to Jesse's room instead.

She completely jumped off the wagon by later introducing Jesse to heroin.
4. Saul Goodman arranged for Walt and Jesse to meet a business man, Gustavo Fring, who would distribute their product. Where did Walt and Jesse go for the meeting?

Answer: A fried chicken restaurant

Walt and Jesse still had 38 pounds of meth left from their last cook, but they had no one to sell it for them. When Saul Goodman suggested that they get some distribution help, Walt initially protested because he didn't want to work with another Tuco.

But Saul suggested "an honest to God business man... someone who's been doing this for twenty years and never been caught". However he claimed to not know who the man was exactly: "Let's just say, I know a guy, who knows a guy, who knows another guy".

The meeting was arranged to take place at Los Pollos Hermanos, a fried chicken restaurant, but Walt left after waiting for a couple of hours for someone to show up. Unbeknownst to them, Gustavo Fring was the business man, and he owned the restaurant.
5. When the personnel at Beneke Fabricators held a party for Ted Beneke, what breathy song did Skyler sing to him at his request?

Answer: Happy Birthday

Skyler and Walt had just left her doctor's office, and she told Walt she had to head back to Beneke Fabricators because it was Ted's birthday, and she needed to deliver the cake. The staff arranged a small party in the shop for Ted, and before blowing out the candles on the cake, he asked Skyler to serenade him a la Marilyn Monroe with a version of "Happy Birthday".

He indicated that she had sang the sultry song to him before, which suggested that their relationship in the past might have been more intimate than she had told Marie.
6. Gustavo Fring initially told Walt that he didn't want to do business with him because Walt had poor judgment. What specific example did he give?

Answer: Jesse was a drug addict.

Walt arrived at Los Pollos Hermanos, ordered food and sat at a table to wait for the meeting that Saul Goodman had arranged. Jesse arrived later in a disheveled state and after waiting for a few minutes, got up and left. Walt ended up waiting for two hours, and when he talked to Saul the next day, he was told that the contact was there but decided "it's a no go" without giving a reason why. Walt went back to restaurant on his own and sat there for a few hours, hoping to see the contact.

He finally decided that it was the manager (who had been the only person who stopped by their table) and asked him why he wouldn't meet with them yesterday.

After claiming not to know what Walt was talking about, Gustavo Fring finally admitted he was the contact when he said: "I don't think we're alike at all, Mr. White. You are not a cautious man at all. Your partner was late, and he was high".

When he asked why Walt had partnered with Jesse, Walt replied, "Because he does what I say. Because I can trust him". Fring responded, "You can never trust a drug addict". Walt later found out that Fring was the owner, not the manager.
7. What did Skyler discover was occurring at Beneke Fabricators which she agreed not to report to authorities?

Answer: Accounting irregularities

Skyler discovered that revenues were being under-reported; cash had been received but not recorded as revenue. At first Ted claimed it was the nature of the contracts with the customers; he said that someone had forgot to adjust the revenue entries. Then Skyler said that she had pulled documentation for the bills of sale and found xeroxed copies with dates changed and no backup.

She pointed out that it was a million dollars in undocumented revenue. Finally he admitted, "Alright, you got me", but he claimed he was doing it for the company, to save people's jobs.

She said she wouldn't turn him in, but she couldn't be a part of it. The accountant in me was a bit confused by this scene; fake invoices usually mean over-reported revenue. Any other accountants want to weigh in on this one?
8. What noise interrupted Walt's class while they were taking a test?

Answer: Walt's phone ringing in the ceiling

Walt was upset after his phone call with Saul, in which Saul told him that the contact didn't want to do business with him. In his anger, he closed his phone and hid it in the ceiling tiles of the classroom without first turning it off. The phone began to ring while his class was taking a test, and he thought it was a student's phone.

He told them to turn off their phones, but as they all checked their phones, they realized the noise was coming from above. When Walt realized it was HIS phone, he told them it must be the pipes.

When Walt retrieved his phone, the text message merely said "Pollos", and Walt rushed off.
9. Walt needed to get the product for his first deal with Gustavo Fring, he but couldn't get a hold of Jesse, so he broke the back door to get into Jesse's house. Where had Jesse hidden the bags of meth?

Answer: Under the sink

Walt went to the Los Pollos Hermanos, but Gustavo Fring wasn't there. As Walt was leaving, a man blocked his way and said "38 pounds, 1.2 million dollars, truck stop, 2 miles south of exit 13 on the 25, one hour". Walt asked for more time, but the man told him if he didn't show up, "don't ever show your face in here again". Walt then went to Jesse's house and broke in through the back door by smashing it. Jesse was passed out, so Walt smacked him around and poured water on him to revive him somewhat. Jesse told him that the product was under the sink. Walt tore everything out from under the sink and finally found the stash in a false ceiling.

He emptied a trash can and put the stash in the used trash bag.
10. As Walt was packing up the bags of meth in Jesse's house, he received a text that made him smile briefly. What did it say?

Answer: Baby coming

Walt first received a call from Skyler as he was banging on Jesse's door, but he was in a rush and didn't answer it. His phone continued to ring while he was searching for the meth in Jesse's house, and while he was packing it up, he received the text message.

He had a brief smile when he looked at it but then said, "No, no, no, no, no, not now". He sat momentarily with a look of despair on his face and then packed up the meth and left.
