Dwight is a cross-over character from the original TV series, "The Walking Dead", but he's not the first. Morgan Jones crossed over in season 4, episode 1. Dwight did not cross over until season 5, episode 3, which first aired on June 16, 2019 on AMC in the United States. Dwight left "The Walking Dead" in 2018, after season 8, episode 16 of that show.

Dwight is played by Austin Amelio. His wife Sherry is played by Christine Evangelista. Though "Fear the Walking Dead" was originally set in California, it moved to Mexico and back to the U.S. and then, in season 5 and 6, most of the action was set in Texas, with one of the communities, Lawton, residing in Oklahoma. Dwight is in Texas when he discovers his wife again after hearing her on a walkie talkie.

Dwight shoots out the tires of their van and demands to know where "she" is, meaning Sherry, but they have no idea what he's talking about. June knocks Dwight out. He later explains he was hoping for a message from Sherry in the vehicle, because she left a note on its registration, and she has been leaving him notes to try to direct him to find her.

After leaving Virginia, Dwight joins Morgan's group, which is eventually dispersed and settled among the Pioneer communities. Along with Al, Dwight's job is to investigate and film failed communities to try to find out why they failed so that the same thing won't happen to the Pioneer communities.

Negan was the head of a group of extortionists known as "The Saviors" in "The Walking Dead". He kept multiple wives in a harem, including Sherry, who agreed to the arrangement under coercion to protect Dwight and to get medicine for her diabetic sister. Dwight began as a worker for the Saviors, but gradually rose to be one of Negan's most trusted men, before he betrayed Negan by becoming an informant to Rick's group.

Sherry feels she can't be at peace until she kills Negan, but she changes her mind and decides to remain with Dwight after hearing June read a letter from her late husband John Dorie over his grave.

In the original "Walking Dead" series, Dwight was burned with an iron by Negan as punishment when he stole medicines from Negan for his sister-in-law Tina and ran off with Tina and Sherry. They were caught and brought back. As a consequence, the left side of Dwight's face is deformed with a large burn scar.

They live by a "code" of ethics they have adopted for themselves, though Dwight has a brief crisis of conscience when he ends up in a confrontation with two men over stolen food and kills one of the men because he seems about to attack.

Victor attempts to recruit Dwight and Sherry to bring Mickey back, but instead Dwight and Sherry join forces with her to attempt to find a place called "Padre."
