Madison is engaged to Travis Manawa, who has an ex-wife and a son named Chris. Madison's character, played by Kim Dickens, was introduced in the pilot episode, which first aired on AMC in the U.S. on August 31, 2015.

Madison has two children. Her eldest, a son, is named Nick, while her high school daughter is named Alicia. She also has a stepson of sorts in Chris, though he is living with his mother.

Although Madison initially tells her children that their father died in a car accident on the way home from a construction site, in reality, he deliberately committed suicide by driving into a construction barrier. Madison knows it was a suicide because he left a note saying, "enough is enough."

It's Nick who accidentally causes Jake Otto's death when he tries to keep the man from killing Troy, knocks him into some walkers, and has to amputate his arm. Madison put down Phil McCarthy out of pity when she found him scalped by the Indians, still alive, and talking incoherently.

She bludgeoned Troy Otto, the younger son of Jeremiah, to death with a hammer. And the audience learns that, as a teenager, she shot her alcoholic father in the head to protect herself and her mother from his abuse.

When the show starts, Madison is working as a high school guidance counselor at Paul R. Williams High School in El Sereno, California. It's there she meets her fiancé Travis, who is an English teacher. Madison has to deal with a student, Tobias, who has brought a knife to school, but he knows more than Madison does about the impending apocalypse.

Victor Strand points out that Madison sounds like her accent isn't Californian. Madison reveals she was born in Montgomery, Alabama and later talks of being at home in the country.

The audience learns about Madison's death only through a series of flashbacks. In order to save her children, Victor, and Luciana, who are trapped by walkers in the parking lot, she lights a flare to draw the walkers into the stadium and then sets them on fire. It is implied she is burned and/or consumed because of her self-sacrificial act.

Madison began the apocalypse by hunkering down in her own community, which was policed by the military, before spending some time on Victor Strand's yacht. She then settled at the Abigail Family Vineyard, until it was set on fire and she made herself unwelcome there.

She lived for a time at Rosarito Beach Hotel, after helping to clear it of walkers, until it was overrun and she made herself unwelcome there. Next, she settled at Broke Jaw Ranch, run by Jeremiah Otto. Although her son Nick lives for some time in La Colonia, Madison never lived there.

Although Madison has a complex relationship with Daniel, they survive a lot together. She is more open to his way of dealing with the apocalypse than her fiancé Travis, and she confides in him what she witnessed when she left the safe zone. She allows Daniel to torture Andrew Adams to learn about her son's whereabouts.

The two seem to develop a trust. Brothers Ennis and Mel, however, are enemies to her people, and Jeremiah Otto, owner of Broke Jaw Ranch, is someone she jockeys with for power and whose head she eventually delivers to the Indians.
