Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This episode began in Seattle.

Answer: True

The first scene showed Addison Montgomery in the scrub room at Seattle Grace Hospital. James Pickens, Jr. special guest-starred in his role as Richard Webber, chief of surgery. The two of them discussed Addison's resignation from Seattle Grace and explained to the audience how she got from there to the Oceanside Wellness Group in Santa Monica, California.

Addison Montgomery is played by Kate Walsh. She has so far been referred to a few times as 'Addison Forbes-Montgomery', especially in articles and specials about the show.
2. What did Sam catch Addison doing?

Answer: dancing naked

Addison bought the house next door to Sam, her old medical school buddy and one of the practitioners at Oceanside Wellness Group. She was stepping out the shower and began to dance around her new house, including right in front of an open window, and Sam saw the whole show from his open window across the way.

Dr. Sam Bennett, the practice's internal medicine specialist, is played by Taye Diggs.
3. Who hired Addison?

Answer: Naomi

Naomi, Sam's ex-wife and majority owner of the Oceanside Wellness Group, hired Addison to become the group's new OB-GYN. However, Naomi didn't tell any of the other doctors about her new staffing choice. Sam was very surprised to see Addison living next door to him, and all the other doctors were surprised to see her back at their practice (they had met Addison when she visited California at the end of season three of "Grey's Anatomy"; two episodes of "Grey's" had served as a backdoor pilot episode for "Private Practice"). They were all furious, not because they didn't like Addison, but because Naomi did not consult them before making the decision to hire Addison.

Dr. Naomi Bennett, a fertility specialist, is played by Audra McDonald. In the original pilot episode from "Grey's Anatomy" season three, the character of Naomi was played by Merrin Dungey.
4. Who accompanied Lucy, the 17-year old who was about to give birth, to the clinic?

Answer: her father

Lucy brought her father, who was furious with her for getting pregnant and then hiding it from him until the moment she went into labour. Her dad was very cold and distant and did not even want to be at Lucy's side while she delivered the child, but he immediately changed his mind and was concerned when Lucy began to experience complications; he was remembering how his late wife, Lucy's mother, had died in childbirth.
5. What do labouring moms love, apparently?

Answer: Pete

This was first said by Naomi, when she was showing Addison the birthing room at the office. Addison found out that she wasn't going to have a staff working under her, other than Dell. And Naomi added that she'd have Pete as well - "and labouring moms love Pete". Pete confirmed this when Lucy arrived in labour; he told Addison to give him a minute and he'd join her, because labouring moms love him.

Dr. Pete Wilder, played by Tim Daly, is the group's alternative medicine specialist, a.k.a. The Quack.
6. Sam and Naomi were involved in a dispute between two women who both wanted what from a dead man?

Answer: his sperm

Sam and Naomi had been working with a woman and her boyfriend who wanted to have a child. They were going to do an in vitro fertilization, but the boyfriend, Ken Wilson, had a stroke while he was making his sperm deposit. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the local hospital, but his girlfriend, Leslie, decided she still wanted his sperm. Sam and Naomi convinced the hospital staff that Leslie should be legally entitled to it, based on the couple's medical records that proved that Ken did in fact want to have a baby with Leslie. Just as the hospital gave Naomi permission to extract the sperm from the body, another woman showed up and said that Leslie couldn't have it - because it was her husband's sperm. Ken's wife then claimed she wanted the sperm for herself, because that would cause a legal battle between her and Leslie, allowing enough time to pass so that the sperm would no longer be viable and Leslie could not have Ken's child.

In the end, after speaking to Naomi, Mrs. Wilson decided to let her husband go and allow Leslie to have the sperm.
7. Dell accuses Addison of not having confidence in what?

Answer: his midwifery skills

Dell Cooper, played by Chris Lowell, is the Oceanside Wellness Group's receptionist, who is also studying to be a midwife. When he volunteered to help Addison deliver Lucy's baby, she turned him down and he accused her of thinking he was just a dumb surfer boy and of doubting his midwifery skills.

When Lucy's labour complications began, Addison did need Dell to help her out, and later said that he did a fine job.
8. Violet dealt with a patient who had a mental episode in a department store; what triggered this patient's episode?

Answer: seeing video footage of a young boy

The practice's psychiatrist, Violet Turner, is played by Amy Brenneman. Violet was called to a department store by the manager, who had found her business card in the purse of a woman who was crawling around on the floor counting tiles. Violet told him that was counting was a common practice in patients who wanted to establish some order in their lives, but that she needed to figure out what triggered the incident in order to help Jenny, the patient. With the help of Dr. Cooper Freedman, the pediatrician (played by Paul Adelstein), Violet determined that Jenny had seen a short video clip of a young boy jumping off a dock into some water and had been reminded of her own son, who had died of aggressive cancer, who had spent his last days at the family's cottage on the lake.
9. What words did Addison use to describe the surgery she performed on Lucy?

Answer: 'crazy MacGyver surgery'

Addison was close to panicking over Lucy's condition, because the OWG is not properly equipped to perform emergency surgeries and they were told that an ambulance would take at least ten minutes to reach them. Lucy and her baby did not have ten minutes. Addison decided to go ahead and cut her open right there and perform an emergency C-Section.

They sterilized as best they could, and Pete used his Eastern medicine techniques to relieve some of the pain that Lucy would feel, because they did not have anesthesia at their disposal.

When the paramedics did arrive, Addison told Dell not to let them in because they were trying to keep the room as sterile as possible and that she was in the middle of "a crazy MacGyver surgery"; referring to the show "MacGyver" and how the main character was always able to do complicated tasks using only the tools he had with him.

Interestingly, these were the exact words that Joe the bartender used in season three of "Grey's Anatomy" to describe how Dr. Burke stitched up a wound on Walter in the middle of the woods with a fishing hook.
10. In the end, the other doctors of the practice voted to keep Addison on as the OB-GYN.

Answer: False

The other four doctors asked Naomi and Addison to join them in the conference room, where they again expressed their displeasure at Naomi not asking for their input before she hired Addison. They then said they were going to vote, but Addison would not let them.

She said that they needed her, that if she hadn't been there, Lucy would have died that day; she said that the private practice was so different from her experiences in a big hospital, and that she absolutely loved those differences; and finally Addison said that she was staying on as the OB-GYN, and that she was putting her foot down.

The other doctors stared in disbelief at this strong outburst and Naomi simply said "See, that's why I didn't tell you she was coming."
