They did look into a nurse who had quit three days later, but during the couple of days where a switch would have been possible, that nurse was laid up in the emergency room with a really bad case of flu.

They finally figured out that baby Sarah's father had been the one to perform the switch. He and his wife had spent a lot of time and money trying to get pregnant and he did not want to end up with a child who would die before she was five years old.

He switched their hospital bracelets one day when he was alone in the nursery. His wife was appalled to learn that he had given away their child like that, and decided right then and there that she would leave him.

He was arrested as well. In accordance with California law, the babies had to be returned to their rightful parents. It was a heartbreaking scene when the mothers gave up the babies they thought they were their own and welcomed a new daughter into their arms. Emily's father finally showed some emotion, and cried when he had to give her to Sarah's mother.
