Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to "Time's Arrow, Part II", what future writer was the bellhop at Data's hotel?

Answer: Jack London

If you believe the story, London befriended Data, and was encouraged to go to the Klondike, which is where some of his best known stories are set, by Mark Twain. Sounds plausible to me.
2. Continuing with the same episode, what did Mark Twain leave behind in the cave at the end of the story?

Answer: Pocket watch

When he went forward in time to the Enterprise, he learned that his pocket watch had been found in the same cavern as Data's head. As he was leaving the cavern after returning to his own time, he remembered to leave the watch behind.
3. In "Realm of Fear", what part of Barclay's body did the crewmember trapped in the matter stream touch?

Answer: Arm

Some crewmembers were exposed to lifeforms that lived within a plasma streamer. They tried to remove the lifeforms via the transporter, but their patterns were trapped in the plasma. Barclay was exposed by one of the trapped people, and when he was in the matter stream being cured, he grabbed a crewman and brought him to safety, leading to the rescue of the others.
4. Here's a couple of questions about "Relics". Who joined Scotty in the holodeck version of the original Enterprise ("1701, no bloody A, B, C, or D") bridge?

Answer: Picard

For all the hype that went with the return of Spock in "Unification", I think this episode in general, and this scene with Picard and Scotty sharing memories of their old ships over brandy in particular, was better than anything in the earlier episode.
5. What did the Enterprise use that accidentally activated the entrance system that pulled the ship inside the Dyson's Sphere?

Answer: Standard hail

The frequency of a Federation ship's standard hail was the same as the frequency of the entry system for the sphere. They sent a signal, and got pulled in. It took Scotty and Geordi's ingenuity to get the damaged USS Genolen moving and into a position to help give the Enterprise an escape route.
6. Who wasn't taken from the ship in the episode "Schisms"?

Answer: Mot

An alien race that couldn't exist in our enviroment was bringing members of the crew into theirs for experimentation, which included amputating Riker's arm and reattaching it.
7. In "A Fistful of Datas", Brent Spiner, while in his Data makeup, played multiple characters on the holodeck. Which character did he not play in Deadwood?

Answer: Mary, the school teacher

An experiment to see if Data could directly run the ship went wrong, so that holodeck characters had Data's appearance and skills, Data started acting like a cowboy from a John Ford western, and replicators only offered Spot's catfood. This was one of several episodes where Brent Spiner got to play multiple roles.
8. In "Chain of Command, Part I", who took over as captain?

Answer: Jellico

The Cardassians were allegedly working on a new weapon that only Picard was qualified to disarm. Jellico took over the Enterprise in case he didn't get back. It turned out that capturing Picard was the real goal. The weapon reports were meant to draw him into a trap, and they worked.

This was also the episode that Troi finally started wearing a normal uniform instead of civilian attire on the bridge.
9. I bet you saw this question coming. How many actual lights were behind Gul Madred's desk?

Answer: 4

In an effort to break Picard, Gul Madred kept punishing him because he wouldn't say that there were 5 lights behind the desk, when there were actually 4. Picard was able to hold out until he was released back to the Enterprise, but later admitted to Troi that at the end he really thought he saw 5 lights.
10. In "Ship in a Bottle", did Moriarty actually leave the holodeck?

Answer: No

Moriarty was a self aware hologram ("Elementary, Dear Data"). Wanting to exist off the holodeck, he created a program that convinced Picard and Data that he already could exist in the real world, and got info from Picard that let him take over the actual ship in order to force the crew to help him reach his goal. Once they figured this out, they created another program that tricked Moriary into believing he'd succeded in his plan, and he and his love went out to explore the galaxy thanks to a holodeck program and an expansion module.
11. Which of Picard's internal organs were damaged in his bar fight with the Nausicaans when he was just out of Starfleet Academy?

Answer: Heart

"Tapestry" had Picard dying because his artificial heart was damaged, and thanks to Q, he tried an new version of history where he avoided getting in the fight. It set up a series of events where he became a junior officer who never took any risks and never accomplished anything.

After he let things play out as they originally happened, and was saved by Dr. Crusher, he found himself appreciative of what Q had shown him, assuming of course that it was Q in the first place.
12. Which crew member from "DS9" brought a piece of equipment on board the Enterprise that when activated caused Data's dream program to start working?

Answer: Bashir

The device's actual role was never really explained, but it caused Data to dream about his father, Noonien Soong. According to what he's told by Dr. Soong, a dream program was included in his programming, and designed to activate when he reached a certain level of awareness.
13. The Klingons that Worf found in Romulan space were survivors and relatives of the same massacre where his parents were killed. True or False?

Answer: True

While Worf's father was killed, a group of Klingons were taken prisoner. Rather than have their families dishonored by that event, they chose to live in Romulan space so everyone would think they died with honor. When their children chose to leave with Worf, it was with the agreement that they'd never tell anyone their true heritage.
14. Which race was not involved in "The Chase"?

Answer: Ferengi

When a puzzle involving DNA fragments from several worlds was solved, it was found that an ancient race seeded this part of the galaxy with their genetic material so that all the future races would have a part of them inside, and at least somewhat look like them. Just for fun, look for the artifact that Dr Galen gave Picard in the wreckage of his office the next time you watch the movie "Generations".
15. Where in the ship did Picard and Neela play the music that Picard learned during "The Inner Light" together in "Lessons"?

Answer: Jeffries tube

She had located a particular spot where the acoustics were perfect, and played on a portable keyboard while Picard played the song from "The Inner Light" on the flute. The crewmembers in Engineering heard the music, but didn't figure out where the music they heard was coming from.
16. In "Face of the Enemy", who was altered to look like a Romulan?

Answer: Troi

We got to see the harder side of Counsellor Troi for one of the few times in the show. This was also one of the rare times that we got an idea of what Ambassador Spock was up to back on Romulus, and the first time we heard anything about people defecting from the Federation.
17. In "Rightful Heir", what Klingon figure had been cloned?

Answer: Kahless

Kahless was a great leader from Klingon history, and the model for all Klingon warriors that followed him. A group of Klingon religious leaders found a way to clone him, with the intention of making him a symbol for their people to follow. Chancellor Gowron defeated him in a fight, but Worf convinced Gowron that his people did need a symbol, and he agreed to accept the clone as a figurehead emperor.
18. When the group from the shuttle craft found the Enterprise and a Romulan ship almost frozen in time during "Timescape", who was about to be shot?

Answer: Dr. Crusher

An alien race thought that the artificial black hole that powered the Romulan ship was a real one, and the resulting accident caused time to run diffently at differnt points in space. An accidental firing of a weapon toward Dr. Crusher was about to kill her, but Troi saved her. We also got to see Picard drawing a happy face in a worp core explosion.
19. We'll finish with a couple of questions from the season finale. In "Descent, Part I", which real person played a holographic version of himself?

Answer: Stephen Hawking

The author and physicist Stephen Hawking asked for a chance to appear on the show, and they came up with the idea of Data playing a holographic poker game with Albert Einstein, Sir Issac Newton, and Dr. Hawking.
20. Did Data kill in "Descent, Part I"?

Answer: Yes

Data began to suddenly start to experience emotions, but only negative ones, and in a fit of anger killed a Borg. Lore had the Borg feed Data emotions from the chip Lore had gotten from Dr. Soong, and got Data to leave the Enterprise and join him.
