At the end of episode 1, season 8, Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) arrives at castle Winterfell in a dark cloak and hood. He has apparently abandoned Cersei to come north to fight the White Walkers. As he dismounts from his horse, he sees the man Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright), still a cripple since Jaime pushed him from a tower window in season one. Bran is staring intently at Jaime, who looks both shocked and haunted as he stares back at Bran.
Jaime has softened and aged since last we saw him, with a beard of gray and white.
2. Sandor "The Hound"
Answer: Arya Stark
Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) has executed several off her Hate List but not yet Sandor "The Hound" Clegane (Rory McCann), whom she hasn't seen since she abandoned a severely wounded Sandor in season four. Both at Winterfell now, she comes up behind Sandor in the foundry. "You left me to die!" he says. "First, I robbed you", she answers. Sandor looms over her while holding an axe, she glares up at him calm and unafraid--then he smiles a rare smile. With some admiration he calls her "cold", and a survivor. Perhaps they are at a truce?
Still on Arya's Kill List seen in season 8, episode 1 is Sandor's brutal undead brother Gregor "The Mountain" (Hafpor Julius Bjornsson), whom Sandor hates as well, and Cersei Lannister. Ilyn Payne is on the list, but he was last seen in season two because the actor was diagnosed with cancer.
3. Samwell Tarly
Answer: Daenerys Targaryen
Samwell Tarly (John Bradley) has come to Winterfell after study at the Citadel. Jorah Mormont (Iain Glen) and Queen Daenerys seek him out, to personally thank Sam for saving Mormont from grey scale disease. "A great service merits great reward", the Queen tells Sam.
Sam asks for a pardon for stealing the family sword from his father Randyll Tarly's House, leading Daenerys to confess she had her dragon burn Sam's father and his brother to death. Upset and enraged by this news, when Bran Stark encourages him Sam runs to tell Jon Snow the truth of his lineage--that Jon has more claim to the Iron Throne than his love, Daenerys. Another tidbit: before he was killed, Sam's brother Dickon Tarly saved Jaime Lannister in that battle against Daenerys.
4. Euron Greyjoy
Answer: Yara Greyjoy
A while back Euron Greyjoy murdered his brother Lord Balon, the father of Yara and Theon. Euron then pledged the Iron Fleet to Cersei Lannister, and captured his niece Yara. In season 8, episode 1 Yara is rescued by Theon while Euron is away bedding Queen Cersei. Yara's not so happy to see Theon because he did nothing to stop her capture in the first place. She punishes him with a whack on the head, knocking him down, but then offers a hand of peace. There will be no such mercy for her murderous uncle when next they meet.
Queen Yara goes back to the Iron Islands saying those in Winterfell may need a safe place to fall back to should they fail to hold the north. Theon heads for Winterfell to join the fight. Though he saved Sansa from Ramsay Bolton, he may get a very cool reception at the castle he once plundered. Alfie Allen plays Theon. Gemma Whelan is Yara, and Pilou Asbaek is Euron Greyjoy.
5. Dragon Drogon
Answer: Bronn
"Relaxing" with three women in the Lannister castle, the sellsword Bronn (Jerome Flynn) brags that he is the only man who has shot down a dragon. He fails to mention he missed his shot, only wounding Drogon, but he did bring the dragon down. The ladies talk about the dragon setting fire to thousands of fighters in the Lannister army during that Loot Train Attack, where Bronn saves Jaime Lannister's life, but the Dothraki finish off the army. It's because of this loss Queen Cersei had to accept the help of Euron Greyjoy's fleet, and call in the Golden Company, who arrive in King's Landing during this episode. She's upset the Golden Company failed to bring their elephants.
Drogon is healed and at Winterfell now, but Bronn is ordered by Queen Cersei to head there ASAP to kill Tyrion and Jaime. "The Queen has other plans for the Targaryen girl," the maester tells Bronn. Will Drogo realize when Bronn arrives, and remember his attacker?
6. Queen Cersei
Answer: Tyrion Lannister
Although Cersei Lannister orders Bronn to Winterfell to kill both her brothers, Bronn will use the bow and arrow Tyrion used to kill their father Tywin Lannister, with Qyburn calling it "poetic justice" that Bronn kill Tyrion with it. Cersei hates Sansa and House Stark, and sees "the Targaryen girl" as an opponent of war, but all her life she's most deeply despised her younger "imp" brother Tyrion. Now that he's murdered her father, she wants him dead.
As for Tyrion, he never stops looking for sisterly love from Cersei. Even in season 8, episode 1, after all she's done to him, he believes in Cersei--he says he fears her, but he's certain she will do as she promised and send her army to help them fight the White Walkers.
In truth when the maester says, "The dead have broken through the wall..." Cersei replies, "Good".
7. Jon Snow
Answer: The Night King
For a long while Jon Snow has urged everyone to see that the major threat to them all is across the Ice Wall to the North, where the Night King brings the White Walkers, an army of undead wights, undead giants and an undead dragon into the south land of the living. The Night King seems to have set his sights on Jon in particular, and the reverse.
Other than being stabbed to death by his brothers in the Night's Watch, Jon Snow has thus far befriended his enemies and made them comrades. Missing from episode 1 is Jon's dire wolf ("fearsome dog") Ghost. Kit Harington plays Jon Snow, while the Night King is Vladimir Furdik.
8. Dragon Viserion
Answer: Drogon and Rhaegal
Although the undead dragon and his living siblings do not meet in this first episode, there is much talk about them. Jon Snow gets his first ride upon a dragon, Rhaegal, who unbeknownst to Jon then is named after his father Rhaegar. Jon is able to manage the ride fairly well, as one would expect from a half-Targaryen. Most people cannot get near a dragon never mind ride one.
Bran tells the leaders at Winterfell that the Night King broke through the ice wall, using the dragon Viserion who "is one of them". So now they know Viserion is under the control of the Night King. Tormund Giantsbane was on the wall at the time this happened, the end of season 7, but he's out north of Winterfell in this first episode of season 8. Arya asks Gendry to fashion her a spear out of dragon glass. She must have plans for the undead...
9. Bronn
Answer: "Treasonous" brothers
Cersei offered "several chests of gold" if Ser Bronn (Jerome Flynn) kills her "treasonous" brothers Tyrion and Jaime Lannister, in particular Tyrion for murdering their father Tywin with a bow and arrow. She wants Bronn "the Cutthroat" to kill them with that same bow and arrow, for "poetic justice". As always, Bronn puts gold above loyalty and accepts the job.
In past seasons Bronn has fought for, fought with and been teacher to the Lannister brothers, even shooting a spear into the Targaryen dragon Drogon and saving Jaime's life. But he also sold them out before, since Cersei's pockets are deepest, and Bronn is a sellsword--one who sells his sword to the highest bidder.
10. Lady Sansa Stark
Answer: Queens Cersei and Daenerys
Lady of Winterfell Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) has neither liking nor trust for either Queen. Daenerys father the mad Targaryen King tortured and murdered Sansa's grandfather and many others; Cersei and the Lannisters beheaded Sansa's father, executed her mother and brother, and crippled her brother Bran. The only Lannister who showed her kindness, Tyrion, Sansa now views with contempt, suggesting his trust in Cersei is ridiculous. "I used to think you were the cleverest man alive", she tells him scornfully. Tyrion catches Sansa talking in secret to a Lord. She learned much about scheming and strategy--playing the game--from Littlefinger, after all. As Sansa walks away, Tyrion sees Bran across the way, staring at Tyrion in a way both strange and intense.
Queen Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) rules the Iron Throne alone now, in King's Landing; Queen Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) crossed the Narrow Sea with two great armies to fight the White Walkers, and then plans to take the Iron Throne. Both women feel fierce entitlement to rule, based on family history, betrayal and pain. Perhaps Sansa is a cynic when it comes to those claiming royal blood.
