Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How much did Del pay for the bricks?

Answer: £100

Del paid for a pile of bricks in the hope of selling them to builders for a 200% profit. A factory had been demolished on the site which made pre-fabricated structures.
2. Del found some lead under the bricks which had originally been produced for lining church roofs.

Answer: False

The lead was actually for the construction of a nuclear fallout shelter. This episode originally aired in 1981 during the height of the Cold War when the threat of a nuclear attack seemed like a very real possibility. There was about three tonnes of lead altogether, or £1000 worth. Although Del laid claim to the lead, it wasn't legally his, as he had only paid for the bricks.
3. Which of the following suggestions does Rodney NOT suggest may be used as the sound of the four minute warning?

Answer: Marching pipe bands

Rodney asks Del what he would do if he heard the four minute warning. Del asks what it sound like, and Rodney replies that no one knows, offering the listed suggestions as possibilities.
4. Where do Del, Rodney and Granddad settle on as a potential location for a fallout shelter?

Answer: The New Forest

Granddad suggests The New Forest, as Del had always wanted a weekend place. When Del points out that they could never make the journey in four minutes, Rodney suggests Granddad's allotment as an alternative. They decide to give it a trial run for time.
5. What was the name of the man driving the police car?

Answer: Wayne

Del, Rodney and Granddad are stopped by the police for speeding. When the sergeant gets out of the car, he walks around to the driver's side and calls out the name Wayne a few times to get him to turn the siren off.
6. The police sergeant asks Del if he knows anything about a stolen microwave.

Answer: False

He actually asks about some stolen summer wear.

Del: "You after a promotion, Eric?"
Eric: "No, me and the wife are off to Corfu next month."
7. What did Granddad take with him to the shelter?

Answer: Television

Granddad is constantly seen watching two TVs when he is in the flat. He took one of the into the shelter, only to discover that the analogue signal could not get through the lead.
8. How old did Granddad's brother, George, claim to be during the war?

Answer: 14

Granddad is telling Del and Rodney about the horrors of war, and mentions that children of 14 used to pretend to be 18 so that they could join in the war effort.

Granddad: "My brother, George, lied about his age."
Rodney: "Pretended he was 18?"
Granddad: "No, he WAS 18. He pretended he was 14."
9. How many batteries does Rodney estimate they would need in the event of a nuclear fallout?

Answer: 1450

The batteries last about twelve hours each. Rodney thinks they would need to stay in the shelter for two years to avoid radiation poisoning when they come out. Del asks how many batteries they would need.

Rodney: "Well, there's two a day. Seven days a week. Two sevens are fourteen."
Del : "See that, Granddad? Two sevens are fourteen. Just like that. No hesitation."

When Rodney reveals they would need about 1450-odd, Del remarks sarcastically that he thought they would need a lot.
10. The shelter was eventually built on the roof of Nelson Mandela House.

Answer: True

At the very end of the episode, the camera pans out to reveal the shelter on the roof of Nelson Mandela House, just as Del proclaims that in the event of a nuclear war, they would be as "safe as houses."
