Angela Kang took over from Scott Gimple as showrunner during season 9 of "The Walking Dead." The season uses material from issues 127 through 144 of the comic book series and depicts what happens in the aftermath of the War with the Saviors as the communities of Oceanside, Hilltop, the Kingdom, and Alexandria unite to face obstacles and integrate the surrendered Saviors into their world.

Rick left the show in episode 5 of season 9. After being impaled on rebar, and then playing the hero and stopping a herd by exploding a bridge, Rick washes up on shore and is found by Anne (Jadis), who communicates via radio and has him taken up in a helicopter.

Maggie also departed the show in season 9, but she was not a season 1 character. Maggie wasn't introduced until season 2, episode 2, "Bloodletting." Maggie is expected to return in season 11 of "The Walking Dead."

With Rick's departure, Carol and Daryl became the only two remaining characters from season one of "The Walking Dead."

Answer: By hanging

Gregory takes advantage of Earl Sutton's grief over his dead son and manipulates him when he is drunk into attacking Maggie. When that doesn't work, Gregory pulls a knife on Maggie himself. While Earl is imprisoned for his attack, Maggie orders Gregory to be hung for his in episode 1 of season 9, "A New Beginning." The hanging serves as a public display intended to send the message that such behavior will not be tolerated in the future.

Answer: His arm

In episode 2, "The Bridge," when a herd of walkers approaches a repair crew working on the bridge, Aaron's arm ends up crushed under a log that rolls down from a log pile. While Daryl rescues him, Enid is forced to amputate the lower half of his left arm.

She's never done a medical procedure like it before and must consult medical books. Later, Aaron ends up making a morning star weapon he can attach to the stub on his arm. In the comic book series, Rick has his hand cut off by the Governor, but the television writers decided to give Aaron a similar injury instead.

Answer: No exceptions

Former Saviors mysteriously go missing in season 9. In episode 3, Daryl and Maggie learn they are being killed by Oceanside's women in revenge for the Saviors having killed all of Oceanside's men. They catch Cyndie in the act of preparing to execute Arat and are going to stop her, but then Cyndie tells them of how Arat made her beg for her little brother's life. Cyndie makes Arat repeat the final words she said before killing Cyndie's bother: "No exceptions."

"No exceptions" were the very same words Negan used when he killed Glenn. When Daryl and Maggie hear this, they turn around and leave, allowing Cyndie to proceed with the execution.

Answer: In a pit

Rick is not allowing Maggie into Alexandria because he knows she wants to kill Negan. So together, in episode 4, "The Obliged," Maggie, Daryl, and the Oceanside group conspire to get her through those gates. Jesus warns Rick of Maggie's intentions, and Rick in turn contacts one of the message relays, Rachel, to tell her to be on the lookout for Maggie, but Rachel is in on the plan. Daryl offers to drive Rick back to Alexandria to intercept Maggie, but actually veers off road.

When Rick realizes what he's doing, they get into a fist fight and end up sliding into a pit. Trapped in the pit, they work out their differences and come to peace with one another.

Answer: The Highwaymen

Magana's group is rescued by Judith after a time jump in season 9, episode 5, "What Comes After," and is eventually integrated into the Hilltop.

Season 9 also introduces The Whisperers in episode 6, when Eugene and Rosita hide from a group of walkers they hear whispering, "Where are they?"

The Highwaymen are introduced in episode 13, when Jerry tells Ezekiel his patrol was jumped and robbed. The Highwaymen insist on a toll being paid by anyone traveling their road to the Kingdom's fair. Ezekiel ends up striking a deal with them to provide protection to traveling fair-goers.

The Scavengers were introduced in season 7, the Saviors in season 6, and the Wolves in season 5.

Answer: Ezekiel and Michonne

Ezekiel proposes to Carol in season 9. She initially rejects him, but after a time jump, we see that they are married and have adopted Henry as their son. After the time jump, the audience also discovers that Enid has formed a relationship with the ex-Savior Alden and that Jerry and Nabila have children together.

While Ezekiel and Michonne do later share an extemporaneous kiss in season 10, they do not become romantically involved.

Answer: Jesus

Jesus, played by actor Tom Payne, meets his end in episode 10, "The Next World." While several members of the group are searching for the missing Euguene, they end up trapped in a cemetery, where they are surrounded by walkers. Jesus is killing the walkers when one suddenly ducks, pulls a knife, and stabs Jesus in the back.

Answer: Jocelyn's children

A flashback episode in season 9 reveals the source of these scars as well as the source of Michonne's reticence to help Magna's group. At some point before the time jump, Michonne welcomes an old friend, Jocelyn, into Alexandria. Jocelyn shows up at the gates with a group of children. They quickly settle into Alexandria, but one night Jocelyn raids the pantry and leads several of Alexandria's children, including Judith, away.

Daryl joins a pregnant Michonne to track and rescue the children. They are temporarily captured by Jocelyn, who has her children brand them with cattle brands, saying, "I told you children are capable of anything."

Answer: Magna and Tara

Magna is involved with Yukimo, not Tara. The audience sees Magna and Yukimo kiss in season 9, episode 15, "The Calm Before." Yukimo was Magna's defense attorney before the apocalypse. Father Gabriel and Anne (Jadis) share a kiss in episode 2, "The Bridge," and begin to share a romantic relationship, but it's cut short when Gabriel discovers Anne has been trading people for supplies. Later, Father Gabriel develops a romantic relationship with Rosita, and the audience sees them kiss in episode 6, "Who Are You Now?"

Answer: Siddiq

During episode 9, "Adaptation," Rosita tells Siddiq that she is pregnant with his child. They apparently had a series of casual sexual encounters during the off-screen time jump, but are no longer a couple. Rosita ends up choosing Father Gabriel as her lover, and Eugene becomes a helper in raising her child, in a sort of "Three Men and a Baby" storyline.

Answer: Henry

Carol and Ezekiel's adopted son Henry comes to the Hilltop to train under Earl to be a blacksmith. He is initially put in the cell for sneaking outside the Hilltop, getting drunk, and causing trouble, but Daryl sees to it that his stay is extended when Lydia is captured.

He thinks the two will hit off and talk, and he stays outside the prison by the window, listening to their conversation. Henry is unaware of his part in the plan and develops a fondness for Lydia.

Answer: Michonne

Michonne, inspired by an exhibit she sees of the Constitution in the American History Museum, proposes a mutli-community charter in the season 9 premiere. In a later flashback, the communities sign the charter together. Rachel, Cyndie's younger sister and a granddaughter to the former leader Natania, has grown up during the time jump and signs for Oceanside. Carol and Ezekiel sign on behalf of the Kingdom, and the Hilltop and Alexandria also have representatives place their signatures on the charter.

Why does Michonne propose a charter instead of a constiution? Danai Gurira, who plays Michonne, told TV Guide, "Charters, to me, seem to be simpler. A constitution involves a lot of elected, delegated people, whereas a charter is something that can be more simply enacted and I think ultimately grown upon."

Answer: Daryl's

Alpha sneaks into the Kingdom's fair, and the Whispers take several captives, decapitate them, and use their heads to mark their northern border, a line that they insist the allied communities must not cross without more dire consequences. Tammy Rose Sutton, the wife of blacksmith Earl Sutton who adopted the Whisper's abandoned baby, also ends up with her head on a pike. The remaining heads include those of two of the Highwaymen, two ex-Saviors, and two young members of the Hilltop.

When Carol beholds her son Henry's head on the pike, Daryl turns her to him and tells her to look at him instead.

Answer: False

In the finale of season 9, "The Storm," the Kingdom collapses because pipes have burst and rot has set into the buildings. The rot seems symbolic of the rot that has also crept into Carol and Ezekiel's marriage, because after their adopted son Henry's death, their marriage begins to crumble.

On the journey through snow from the Kingdom to the Hilltop, Ezekiel confronts Daryl and tells him it would be easier for him and Carol to maintain their marriage if Daryl and Lydia (who is a constant reminder of Henry's death) were out of the picture and settled somewhere other than the Hilltop. Daryl asks Ezekiel if that's what Carol wants, and Ezekiel replies they both want the same thing - to hold their son alive again.

In the end, however, Ezekiel cannot save their marriage. At the Hilltop, Carol returns his ring and follows Daryl and Lydia to Alexandria.
