He eventually found a small pistol taped to the underside of the kitchen sink basin. He took the gun into the lab and told Skinner that the "clip was three rounds shy," which was the same number of shots fired in the Hangemuhl house before Mulder disappeared.

The men had come to the woman's house to find the creature, now that they knew it wasn't dead. When they saw it trying to escape through the woods, they released their dogs, which gave chase until the creature got caught in a net and dragged back to the trucks. As the woman pleaded for the creature's welfare, the men locked it into the back of an enclosed truck and drove it away.

After talking to Sheriff Frey, they went to the cemetery to dig up the grave where the transient had been buried. Doggett was looking for evidence to support his theory that Mulder had shot the transient. However, when they got there they found the grave already dug up and the body missing. Doggett also found a tunnel under the open casket through which it seemed someone had escaped the grave!

Marie was suffering from end-stage renal failure, and her husband Paul had arranged to have the creature consume her illness. I remember the first time I saw this episode, I thought Marie was being used as some sort of sacrifice for the town and the creature was going to rape her! Of course, the truth was much more sorrowful.

They then conjectured that the symbol was "placed on a grave as a sign of respect or on a door as a summons [...] to indicate a sick person lives there, someone in need of the creature's healing gift."

Doggett heard a noise and pulled a rug aside to reveal a trap door. When he went through the door and into the caves, he found Marie lying in the floor covered in goo. He took her out of the caves and to the hospital, where tests showed her kidneys disease had "spontaneously healed."

He had gone to the town to get cured, but when he lay on the floor in front of the creature, he saw the pain and suffering it was enduring because of everyone's illnesses. Mulder didn't go through with it and returned that night to shoot the creature and "take its pain away."

Doggett had just put the creature into his car to take him away when the Sheriff and his boys showed up. Sheriff Frey told Doggett he couldn't take the creature, claiming, "It belongs to us." Doggett replied, "This is a man. He doesn't belong to anybody." Set to drive the creature off, Doggett turned to head back to his car.

Sheriff Frey shot Doggett in the back and Doggett fell to the ground, dead.

After Doggett was shot and buried, he found the body and consumed it. When Doggett awoke in the underground cave, covered in yellow viscous fluid, the woman explained, "All these years we didn't know what it could do. It took your death. You freed it."
