Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What item of furniture is Del trying to sell?

Answer: Cabinet

The episode opens with Granddad and Rodney carrying the cabinet into Nelson Mandela House, with Del guiding the way. Del has picked up the cabinet and intends to sell it on. He believes it could be worth a nice sum of money, although it is riddled with woodworm and is falling apart.
2. From which period does Del claim the item of furniture to originate?

Answer: Queen Anne

Del speculates that the cabinet could be a Queen Anne, although Granddad and Rodney are sceptical.

Granddad: "It don't look very old to me."
Del: "No, that is because when you were a lad, this was most probably G Plan. But to anyone born after the Napoleonic wars, this is antique."
3. How much is Del charging for the item of furniture?

Answer: £145

Del is going to place and advert in the newspaper and unsure how much to charge for the cabinet.

Del: "What do you reckon, 95?"
Granddad: "Why don't you go the whole hog and make it a pound?"

Del eventually asks for £145.
4. What is Miranda's surname?

Answer: Davenport

Miranda introduces herself to Del, who initially thinks that she is the owner of the Mercedes he backed into a few days before. She corrects him, and tells him that she is actually enquiring about the cabinet, and had called earlier and spoken to Granddad to arrange a visit.

Miranda: "Well, I left a message with an elderly gentleman. He did sound somewhat vague."
Del: "Yes, yes, he is rather vague. He had a bang on the head you see?"
Miranda: "When did this happen?"
Del: "Soon."
5. Miranda rejects the item of furniture, instead preferring to purchase a painting instead.

Answer: False

Miranda is not interested in the cabinet, but she spots a painting that she thinks may be valuable. She asks Del how much he wants for it, and he tells her it's not for sale. Miranda then decides to buy the cabinet and begins flirting with Del, offering to help Del restore the cabinet and share any profit they make from selling it.

This is an attempt to get closer to Del so that he will eventually let her have the painting, which he does later in the episode.
6. Del asks Miranda on a date by slapping her on the bottom.

Answer: True

After Miranda flirts with Del, he asks Rodney to go into the kitchen with him so that he can get some advice about asking Miranda on a date.

Del: "I want your advice, Rodney. I think she fancies me."
Rodney: "Miranda? Leave it out Del, she's an intelligent woman."
Del (pinning Rodney against the wall): "I know she's an intelligent woman, that's most probably why she fancies me."

Rodney then tells Del to ask her out by being himself. When they return to the front room, Del then slaps Miranda on the bottom and asks: "fancy a curry?"

Miranda, despite being initially visibly appalled at Del's behaviour, agrees, much to Rodney's bemusement.
7. What happens when Rodney tries to seduce a lady outside the cafe?

Answer: She slaps him

Having witnessed Del's attempt to seduce Miranda earlier, Rodney and Del are having a drink at an outside cafe table. When Del leaves to buy a "Dalton's Weekly", Rodney catches the eye of a lady sitting at the next table. She stands up and bends over to pick up her back, prompting Rodney to slap her on the bottom and ask: "Fancy an Indian?" She proceeds to slap him and storms off, much to the amusement of a couple sitting at the window table inside the cafe.
8. Where did Del take Miranda for their second date?

Answer: Berni Inn

Del and Miranda come back to the flat. Del is in a tuxedo and bow tie, while Miranda is wearing a blue gown.

Del: "It was a blinding meal, weren't it, Miranda, eh?"
Miranda: "It was very nice. I did feel a bit overdressed for a Berni Inn though."
Del: "No, I don't think so. I think we made quite an impression. I mean, everyone was looking at us."

Berni Inn was a chain of steakhouses in the UK, founded in 1955. The company was sold to Whitbread in 1995 and converted in to Beefeater and Brewers Fayre pub restaurants.

Del also mentions Berni Inn in the episodes "Go West Young Man" (S1 Ep2) and "Fatal Extraction" (1993 Christmas special), and clearly believes Berni Inn to be a high standard dining experience, offering a fine steak meal.
9. What is the name of Miranda's assistant at the shop?

Answer: Harry

Del goes to Miranda's antique shop with a bunch of daffodils, but he has just missed her, as she's gone to the auction house. The shop is closed when Del arrives, and Harry answers the door.

Del: "Here, how comes you ain't open?"
Harry: "We had to close, mate. We're being fumigated, the place is full of woodworm."
Del: "You wanna watch that, H. Especially with your wooden leg."

Presumably, the woodworm have come from the cabinet Del was trying to sell.
10. Del's grandmother stole the painting.

Answer: True

Del visits Miranda at the auction house. She tells him she's busy and that Del should wait for her at the wine bar around the corner. As he is about to leave, he notices the painting he gave to Miranda when she claimed it was her birthday. Realisation dawns on Del that Miranda was just using him to get the painting, and Miranda admits she had no interest in the cabinet or in Del. She then claims that she has registered the painting in her name and that her parents have signed an affidavit claiming the painting has been in their family for generations.

Del: "Thank god for that. I've been trying to get shot of that painting for years."
Miranda: "What do you mean?"
Del: "I know exactly what that painting is, and I know exactly what it's worth."
Miranda: "Rubbish, how could someone like you possibly know that?"
Del: "I'll tell you how I know, shall I? Because my old gran used to be a char lady to an art dealer. That's how I know."
Miranda: "Oh, I see. And this Mrs Mopp examined it, did she?"
Del: "No, she didn't examine it. She nicked it."
