Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Nintendo's flagship first-party titles saw new installments on the Wii. Which 'Legend of Zelda' game was a launch title for the Wii, and was also released on its predecessor, the GameCube?

Answer: Twilight Princess

'The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess' was originally slated for a GameCube release, but the developers chose to delay its release to coincide with the arrival of Nintendo's then-newest home console, the Wii. 'Twilight Princess' marked the first 'Zelda' game for the Wii, and the last for the GameCube. Upon its release, it was lauded by critics and gamers alike as on par with the series' undisputed greatest title, 'Ocarina of Time'.

The game follows the same basic 'Zelda' formula of having the protagonist, Link, rescue Princess Zelda from the evil clutches of Ganondorf, whilst conquering many unique dungeons, acquiring useful new items, and generally laying waste to some of Hyrule's most fearful creatures. 2011 saw the release of the next 'Zelda' console game, 'Skyward Sword'.
2. Link and Zelda got a new game; so did Mario and Luigi. In which 2007 Wii title did Mario reach for the stars, quite literally?

Answer: Super Mario Galaxy

After the success of the first two 3D adventure games, 'Super Mario 64' and 'Super Mario Sunshine', all eyes were on Nintendo to see what was in store for the Italian plumber on the Wii. In true Nintendo style, fans were not disappointed, and 'Super Mario Galaxy' was an instant universal success. Awards and accolades poured in from all over the world, and the game shot up to the top of many 'Best Game' lists giving 'The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time' a run for its money.

As always, Mario sets out to save Princess Peach and roundly trounce her kidnapper Bowser, collecting stars along the way, but this time, Mario takes to outer space and explores strange new planets and galaxies as he travels across the universe to the tune of orchestrated music, a welcome addition which added so much depth and grandeur to an already amazing game. Such was the success of 'Super Mario Galaxy' that it spawned a sequel, a first for the series in the sense that it was the first time that a second 'Mario' adventure game was released on the same console. 'Super Mario Galaxy 2' was released in 2010 to equal critical acclaim.
3. Nintendo's friendly rival Sega sent their iconic blue hedgehog the Wii's way in which 2010 game, which also saw a Nintendo DS release?

Answer: Sonic Colours

After a few games which performed worse than expected, Sega sought to give the 'Sonic' series a well-deserved kick in the bottom in the hopes of regaining their reputation for exciting and enjoyable 'Sonic' games. This came in the form of 'Sonic Colours', which indeed restored faith in the brand.

Despite previous games in the series being released across the various home consoles on the market, 'Colours' only saw a release on the Wii and Nintendo DS, the latter being a 2D sidescroller reminiscent of earlier 'Sonic' titles as opposed to a 3D platformer like its console counterpart. Dr. Eggman is up to his old tricks again, and manages to convince Sonic and co. that he has changed his ways by constructing an amusement park in outer space. Of course, Sonic sees through his plan and stops him from enslaving a race of friendly alien beings known as Wisps.
4. 2010 saw a long-awaited successor to Rareware's classic SNES platforming trilogy from the 1990s. Placed in the very capable hands of Retro Studios, what was this game?

Answer: Donkey Kong Country Returns

The 'Donkey Kong Country' trilogy is amongst gaming's best, masterfully created by Rareware in their heyday. The announcement of 'Donkey Kong Country Returns' came unexpectedly, and many thought that Rare were creating a new game for Nintendo, despite being owned by Microsoft. Sadly (or perhaps fortunately), this was not to be, and Retro Studios, who proved their competence with the 'Metroid Prime' trilogy on GameCube and Wii, were revealed to be working on this new 'Donkey Kong' platformer.

The game centres around Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong working together to rid their island of the Tiki Tak tribe who use bananas to brainwash the wildlife to carry out their fiendish plans.
5. There were bundles galore released for the Wii, and no game sold anywhere near as many copies as which title that came bundled with the Wii console itself as a launch title?

Answer: Wii Sports

Almost every Wii owner has or has played 'Wii Sports', a game that was bundled with the console since the very beginning. Consisting of five sports (golf, boxing, tennis, bowling, and baseball), 'Wii Sports' served to show off the Wii's motion controls and familiarise players with its unique control scheme.

By the end of 2006, 'Wii Sports' was one of the highest-selling games of the year. By 2011, it had sold well over 70 million copies worldwide, and overtook Nintendo's own 'Super Mario Bros.' to take the title of highest-selling video game of all time.

A sequel, 'Wii Sports Resort', was released in 2009, and came bundled with the Wii Motion Plus accessory, which enhances the motion sensors in the Wii Remote, allowing it to track the controller's movements more precisely.
6. The third game in the 'Super Smash Bros.' series, which pits Nintendo characters against each one another, was released with what subtitle?

Answer: Brawl

The first 'Super Smash Bros.' game was released in 1999 for the Nintendo 64, and was unique in the sense that it was the first time that characters from a range of Nintendo games could battle it out against one another. 'Super Smash Bros. Melee' followed in 2001/02 for the GameCube, and 'Super Smash Bros. Brawl' in 2008 for the Wii.

The staple Nintendo characters returned (like Mario, Luigi, Bowser, Link, Zelda, Ganondorf, Donkey Kong, Fox McCloud, Kirby, etc), but rather uniquely, there were two outsiders who were new to the series, namely Solid Snake (from the 'Metal Gear' franchise by Konami) and Sonic the Hedgehog (Sega's mascot and counterpart to Mario).
7. The Wii also saw a number of 'sleeper' hits, which went largely unnoticed in the wake of other high-profile titles. Which game was a hit in 2008 by Blue Tongue, an Australian developer, who based the game on a Dutch student design project?

Answer: de Blob

'de Blob' centres around the titular Blob, who, through the use of paint, has to restore all the colour to an otherwise grey and lifeless Chroma City. Comrade Black, the antagonist and leader of the INKT Corporation, seeks to remove all the colour from the world and replace it with white, grey, and black.

As Blob paints, he unlocks new areas of the city, restores rivers, pools and fountains, and liberates citizens from their bland, colourless lifestyle. The game was well-received, with particular emphasis on the unique, funky, up-beat soundtrack, and a sequel came along in 2011 for the Wii, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
8. Retro Studios started the 'Metroid Prime' trilogy on the GameCube, and finished it on the Wii. A team of developers from three separate companies picked up the series and developed their own title in 2010 entitled what?

Answer: Metroid: Other M

Opting for a more cinematic, story-based game, a team of Nintendo, Team Ninja, and D-Rockets developers joined forces to create 'Metroid: Other M'. The Wii's unique control scheme meant that 'Other M' could be played in two different ways: in a third-person perspective by holding the Wii Remote horizontally, and a first-person viewpoint by pointing the controller at the screen, allowing the game's main character, Samus Aran, to fire missiles and scan the immediate environment for vantage points or secret areas. Criticism of the game was mixed: on the one hand, it was praised for its grand, cinematic feel, and simple but effective mechanics, but on the other hand, it was felt that it was too much of a deviation from previous games and that it didn't live up to the series' standards.
9. Capcom added to the influx of sequels in 2009/10 with their beast-hunting game, entitled what?

Answer: Monster Hunter Tri

'Monster Hunter Tri' is the third in the 'Monster Hunter' series, and again players can explore a vast land in search of monsters and other beasts. While there isn't a distinct plot, much of the game revolves around receiving quests and hunting down the relevant monster, wherever it may be, and either slay it or capture it, depending on the quest. Skins, scales and hides can then be harvested from the monsters and used to make armour and weapons.

In addition to a single-player component, the game also offers a multiplayer experience, where players can team up to hunt and take down beasts. 'Monster Hunter Tri' was also bundled with the Classic Controller Pro, a redesigned Classic Controller similar to the Dualshock controller from PlayStation consoles.
10. Clover Studio's 'Zelda'-inspired Wii offering hit the shelves in 2008/09, having previously been released on the PlayStation 2 in 2006/07. What lupine-centric game is this?

Answer: Okami

Drawing on Japanese history for inspiration, 'Okami' focuses on Amaterasu, the sun goddess, who becomes a white wolf and can interact with the environment and enemies through use of the Celestial Brush, which can paint onto the surroundings. The game's art style is also based on that of traditional Japanese watercolour, and the cel-shaded graphics reflect this. 'Okami' was ported to the Wii after its success on the PlayStation 2, and the developers thought that the Celestial Brush mechanic would fit well with the Wii's control scheme. 'Okamiden', which is related to 'Okami' but isn't a direct sequel, was released in 2010/11 for the Nintendo DS.
