"Gabriel Knight" Part 4 Trivia Quiz

Considering how well-loved the computer game "Gabriel Knight" seems to be among adventure game fans, it's hard to believe there were no quizzes here on any of the games before I started these quizzes in 2015.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who dies on day 5 (besides possibly Gabriel)?

Answer: Professor Hartridge

At the beginning of day 5, Professor Hartridge calls Gabriel to share the information that he learned about the voodoo murders. The murderers catch him doing this, and he is strangled to death while talking to Gabriel. Gabriel goes to his office to find the poor man dead. Gabriel finds notes about the murderers on Hartridge's desk.

These notes help convince Detective Mosely to get back on the Voodoo Murders case. Hence, while Professor Hartirdge died a very unfortunate death by being dragged into an unfortunate situation, at least he died a hero.

The murderers could not have been stopped without Professor Hartridge's help.
2. Day 5 is the first day in this game that Gabriel can die. Where can he die on day 5?

Answer: The Voodoo Museum

There are not many ways to die in this game. Truth be told, by the time I got to this point in the game the first time I played it, I had concluded you can't die in this game. I was quite surprised when I learned I was wrong. It could have been an even bigger shock but fortunately I had saved the game at the beginning of the day so I lost no progress.

On day 5, Dr. John gets a message saying to keep an eye on Gabriel but do not harm him. Dr. John assumes that means do not DIRECTLY harm him, so instead of choking Gabriel to death himself, Dr. John sets a trap in his museum. He expects Gabriel to come into his museum, so he leaves the door unlocked and lets his snakes out of the cage. When Gabriel walks into the museum, it is dark and the snake attacks Gabriel. The snake kills Gabriel unless he turns on the light. The light switch terrifies the snake somehow. Once the snake is off Gabriel, Dr. John walks in and apologizes to Gabriel, telling him that the museum was closed. Of course leaving the door unlocked and the snake out of its cage is a pretty stupid thing to do if the museum is closed. So Gabriel begins to suspect that Dr. John is one of the murderers. The trap ends up backfiring on Dr. John. Gabriel was able to get a scale off of the Voodoo Museum snake and he saw that it matches the scale from the lake where the murders took place right before the start of the game. This evidence convinces the police to re-open the Voodoo Murders case. Thank you Dr. John. We would not have been able to stop you without your help.
3. What day is day 6?

Answer: St. John's Eve

Day 6 is St. John's Eve, the biggest night of the year in voodoo. There is a voodoo ceremony on this day. It is up to Gabriel to find where it is.
4. From the Rada drummer at Jackson Square, Gabriel learns that the voodoo clan is meeting where?

Answer: Swamp

Using a Rada drum book that he got Grace to order for him, Gabriel decodes the Rada drummer's message at Jackson Square as "Conclave Tonight Swamp". So Gabriel goes to the swamp to try and find it, but he can't find it by himself because the swamp air confuses his sense of direction. Fortunately for him, Mosely gives him the key to his office so he can get some assistance that isn't susceptible to the swamp air.
5. When Gabriel goes to the police station, Officer Frick no longer acknowledges Detective Mosely as being part of the force. So in order to get in his office, Gabriel must distract him with what?

Answer: Beignets

On day 1, Gabriel sees a beignet vendor outside of the police station. He notices that the officers love beignets. From day 4 to day 6, Gabriel learns that the beignet vendor has moved to Jackson Square. Gabriel tells him to go back to the police station.

When Gabriel next goes to the police station, the cops all leave the station to get beignets. On a slow computer, this gives you the opportunity to sneak into Mosely's office. On a fast computer, Officer Frick will be back before in a flash and you will have no chance to get back there in time.

Instead, you will have to wait until Officer Frick falls asleep to get back there. Having always played this game on a fast computer, I thought this was the most ridiculous puzzle in the game until I learned that the reason the puzzle is this way is because it was designed for the computers they had in 1993, when this game came out. Back in 1993 it was possible to solve the puzzle the way it should be solved.

More recent computers process time faster which makes speed-sensitive puzzles impossible to solve without patches.

They never patched this puzzle because they didn't need to. Jane Jensen was kind enough to put in a way to get into Mosely's office even if you aren't fast enough, so you don't get stuck in a dead end. Even still, this is my 2nd least favorite part of the game. Sometimes you have to wait quite a while for Frick to fall asleep. Sometimes you have to leave and come back several times to get him to fall asleep.
6. Gabriel asks Dr. John to bring what?

Answer: Sekey Madoule

Gabriel finds a tracking device in Mosely's office. He sticks a part of the tracker in the Sekey Madoule at the museum. Then, he goes to the cemetery and leaves a coded message for Dr. John telling him to bring the Sekey Madoule. Dr. John complies and Gabriel finds the clan.
7. Which of the following is NOT a way Gabriel can die at the ceremony?

Answer: Taking off his mask during the ceremony

At the ceremony, everybody will be wearing animal masks and everybody will have a snake tattoo. Gabriel learned from Professor Hartridge and from Willy Walker that everybody wears masks at these ceremonies. Gabriel learned from Crash that if you want to get anywhere near a voodoo ceremony, you have to have a tattoo of a snake on your body. So, Gabriel buys a mask from Willy Walker and wears it right before walking into the ceremony.

He also copies down Crash's snake tattoo after Crash dies and he shows it to Grace and asks her to paint it on his stomach. If you forget to do either of these things, Dr. John will choke you to death right away. If you do both of these things, Dr. John will ask you 2 questions. Gabriel learned the answers to both of these questions from Professor Hartridge's lecture. If you forgot this part of the lecture, the answers to both of these questions come up as discussion topics Gabriel can ask anyone about after the lecture. So it's not that hard to guess the answers to these 2 questions. If you get either of them wrong, Dr. John will choke Gabriel to death. Gabriel WILL take off his mask during the ceremony.

This strangely doesn't get him killed, probably because Dr. John doesn't notice.
8. Who is the main villain in this game?

Answer: Tetelo

Tetelo was an African slave. She was attracted to one of Gabriel's ancestors, a man named Gunter. Then, Gunter betrayed her and she stole his talisman. This turned her into a very powerful Loa and her descendants into rich and powerful people and it nearly destroyed Gunter's family. For the next 300 years, Tetelo committed murder after murder by possessing her female descendants and forcing them to organize voodoo rituals in these areas. During the ritual, she would cut the victim's heart out. Then she would leave all the hearts in a room in the hounfour.

Hence, Marie Laveau and Malia Gedde were never the voodoo queens most people thought they were because they were being controlled by Tetelo.

Dr. John is Tetelo's right hand man. Although he is a major villain in this game, he is not the main one. Tetelo is more powerful than Dr. John. Also, unlike Dr. John, Tetelo has a vendetta against Gabriel because he's Gunter's descendant.
9. Who rescues Gabriel from the ceremony?

Answer: Grace

According to the game, Grace followed Gabriel into the swamp. He passed out during the ceremony because Dr. John blew smoke in his face. Somehow Grace helped him home. How she follows Gabriel into the swamp without him or the player noticing is a mystery. How she got anywhere near the voodoo ceremony without a mask or a tattoo is a mystery to me. Lastly, how she helped Gabriel get home is a mystery. Did she just pick up a man who is bigger than her and carry her all the way from the swamp to his home?
10. Who does Gabriel find in the Gedde crypt?

Answer: Detective Mosely

After calling his uncle Wolfgang, who recommends that Gabriel look for the talisman in New Orleans, Gabriel goes to the crypt of the Gedde family to look for it. He doesn't find it. What he finds is Detective Mosely lying in one of the drawers. He concludes that Mosely is dead.

After finding Mosely, Gabriel gets hit on the head and knocked out. When he regains consciousness, he finds that Mosely is gone, but his wallet remains. Gabriel takes Mosely's wallet thinking Mosely doesn't need it anymore.

After spending a couple thousand dollars traveling around the world, Gabriel learns that Mosely is alive. He also learns that it was Mosely who knocked him out at the tomb, so he then considers the stealing of his wallet and the spending of his money getting even with Mosely. Mosely does not know that Gabriel took his wallet.
11. When he leaves New Orleans, where does Gabriel go?

Answer: Germany

Gabriel goes to Rittersburg Germany to see his uncle Wolfgang, who owns a castle there and invited Gabriel to be there. When Gabriel arrives, he learns that Wolfgang left. Still, Gabriel spends a couple of days in Germany.
12. What does "Schattenjager" mean in English?

Answer: Shadow hunter

Literally, "Schattenjager" means "shadow hunter." It's the term for good, powerful people who fight the forces of evil in the "Gabriel Knight" universe. Many of Gabriel's ancestors were schattenjagers. Now Gabriel must be one.
13. Where does Uncle Wolfgang go?

Answer: Benin

Gabriel learned from Professor Hartridge that Vodoun originated in the People's Republic of Benin. He shares this information with Uncle Wolfgang, and Wolfgang goes there right after Gabriel tells him this but before Gabriel arrives in Germany. In the castle's library, Gabriel reads several books and eventually learns that there is a double snake mound in Benin. So he goes there to look for Wolfgang.
14. When Gabriel gets all the tiles in the snake mound in their correct places, which tile number turns out to be the important one?

Answer: 3

This is where some information Gabriel learned way at the beginning of the game becomes important. Gabriel read the phrase "Drei Drachen" in his grandfather's book in his book shop. That translates to English as 3 dragons. Gabriel also read a book about snakes in his own book shop.

While he was reading the book out loud, Grace told him that legends of dragons are really based on snakes. At first Gabriel responds "Grace, get a life!" but at this point in the game he should be thanking Grace. All of the tiles had a certain number of snakes on them. Without Grace's help, Gabriel would not have known of the connection between dragons and snakes and there is no way Gabriel would have made the "Drei Drachen" connection to the three snakes in this snake mound. Even Uncle Wolfgang couldn't make that connection.
15. What kind of monster does Gabriel accidently bring to life in the snake mound?

Answer: Mummies

There is one mummy in each room. After Gabriel sticks the rod in tile 3, all the mummies come to life and go after Gabriel and Uncle Wolfgang, trying to rip their hearts out. Gabriel and Wolfgang must make it to room 7, where there is a secret passage to the inner wheel and they can get away from the mummies.

This is the hardest part of the game. This part of the game is the one reason I have yet to do a playthrough of this game where I didn't die at least once. Since my first playthrough, I have not died anywhere else in the game. The mummies always get me several times before I finally get past them.
