Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who does Gabriel accidently kill on day 9?

Answer: Uncle Wolfgang

Gabriel and Uncle Wolfgang go to Benin to recover the family talisman. When they get to the inner wheel of the snake mound they find a trough. They can feel a magical energy coming from there and they believe that's where the talisman is. But they can't get the lid off the trough by itself.

They have to get a human heart from the mummy. Uncle Wolfgang tells Gabriel to cut up a dead mummy and get the heart from the mummy. Uncle Wolfgang knew what was going to happen when Gabriel cut up that mummy. Gabriel didn't.

It was real voodoo. Whatever happened to the mummy was going to happen to Uncle Wolfgang. So when Gabriel cut up the mummy, Uncle Wolfgang was stabbed to death. Gabriel, and probably everybody who played or watched someone else play this game the first time, was emotionally torn apart by this. Gabriel's anger gave him the strength to lift the lid off the trough.
2. Who gets abducted by the murderers on the 10th and final day of the game?

Answer: Grace

Gabriel learns from Detective Mosely that the murderers are targeting mainly out-of-towners. Unfortunately, Gabriel does not mention this to Grace, who is from Japan. Therefore, Grace does not know that she is in trouble. She knows that Gabriel is in trouble and strongly urges him to get out of New Orleans.

However, she does not do so herself. She gets kidnapped right before Gabriel returns to New Orleans.
3. Who turns up in Gabriel's bookstore, shockingly alive?

Answer: Detective Mosely

Gabriel found Detective Mosely laying down in the Gedde crypt and thought he was dead. When Gabriel returns to his book shop and sees Mosely, he still does not believe that Mosely is a live. He thinks he is a mummy or something. It turns out Mosely was trying to learn as much about the history of the Geddes as he could.

When Mosely heard someone coming into the tomb, he destroyed a light bulb that was in the tomb (that explains all the broken glass that was there as well as why Gabriel heard the sound of breaking glass when he pushed the button and why it was dark there) and hid in one of the drawers.

When Gabriel found him in a drawer, Mosely knocked him out and ran off, accidently leaving his wallet behind. Mosely did not know it was Gabriel at the tomb, he thought it was one of the murderers. Gabriel is angry and Mosely for almost killing him, but then he realizes he spent thousands of dollars of Mosely's money and Mosely wasn't dead, so he calls it even.

The two of them fill each other in on what they have learned, then they make a plan.
4. Where is the entrance to the hounfour?

Answer: Cathedral

The ENTRANCE to the hounfour is in one of the confessional booths in the cathedral. There is a knothole in the cathedral the same size as the twelve knotholes in the snake mound in Benin. The way to get in the cathedral is to insert a snake rod into the knothole. This triggers an elevator that takes you underground to the hounfour.
5. What is in room 10?

Answer: Animals

Room 10 is where they keep all the animals they use in the rituals. You can't do anything in there during the game except listen to the music and feel sympathy for the poor animals. This is the one room in the hounfour that has its own music. On a soundtrack where just about every piece of music is a winner (most people who are familiar with this game will tell you it has one of the greatest video game soundtracks of all-time if not THE greatest), the theme for the animal room is one of my personal favorites.

It is possible that Gabriel goes back to this room after you beat the game but before the ending scene and sets the animals free. I like to think he does, anyway.
6. What room is Malia Gedde in?

Answer: Three

Gabriel can go into room 3 and overhear a conversation between Malia and Tetelo. Malia begs Tetelo to set her free and to not harm Gabriel. Tetelo tries to convince Malia that Gabriel will betray her just like his ancestor betrayed Tetelo. Poor Malia refuses to believe her and runs off, terrified and upset.

Actually, Tetelo can be right. That is up to the player to decide at the end of the game. However, there are two sequels to this game, both of which assume that Tetelo is wrong.
7. What room is Dr. John in?

Answer: 2

Dr. John can be found in a cracked, blood-stained room, praying to an altar that appears to be made of the bones of an animal. In that room is a keycard that Gabriel must steal, but he cannot steal it while Dr. John is in the room. He must get Dr. John out of the room.
8. What is Dr. John's voodoo name?

Answer: Brother Eagle

Gabriel learned at the swamp that Dr. John was Brother Eagle. Gabriel finds a Rada drum book in room 4 that has the codes for all the members of the cult. He uses this and the drums in the inner circle to lure Dr. John out of his room so he can steal the keycard.

Interestingly, Gabriel can say a number of things to get Dr. John out of his room. He can summon him. He can warn him. He can engage him. He can request him. He can inquire him. The hint book says to summon him, but I've found that it doesn't have to be "summon." As long as the 2nd part of the code is "Brother Eagle," Dr. John will come. He will be out of his room for a short time, which gives Gabriel a small amount of time to go in his room and steal the keycard. While Dr. John is wandering through the hounfour, you will hear some amazing music. Once this amazing music stops, you will know that he has returned to his room.
9. Which of the following rooms is not locked?

Answer: 7

Room 1 has all of the money. Gabriel can break into that room and steal some money (since they got it in an awful way, Gabriel feels no guilt stealing from them). He can't fit it all in his pockets, but it makes him quite rich.

Rome 11 is where they keep all the body parts that they steal from the murderers (the hearts and other things). Gabriel cannot do anything in this room, he just gets points for getting in there.

Room 8 is where Grace is.

Room 7 has the costumes, so you'd think that'd be locked but it isn't.
10. One of the many things people love about Gabriel Knight is the fact that unlike many other Sierra games, especially the popular "King's Quest" games, Gabriel Knight does not have many dead ends. However, this game has a few dead ends. What is one way to get irreversibly stuck in this game?

Answer: Enter Grace's room without Mosely

When you find the entrance to the hounfour, you better leave the tracker and snake rod there for Mosely. If you don't do so right away, you'll still have more chances to do so. The elevator does not return to the cathedral until after you've left the tracker and snake rod there. So, you can go back to the cathedral and leave the snake rod and tracker at any time... until you find Grace. Once you find Grace there is no turning back, and if you didn't leave the tracker and snake rod for Mosely by that point, Gabriel and Grace are doomed. Detective Mosely is the only person among these three people who has the means to take out Dr. John (a gun). Gabriel and Grace cannot fight Dr. John because he is too big and strong and the talisman protects against magic not muscle. If Mosely is not there, Gabriel will be killed by Dr. John one way or another (Grace might be killed by Tetelo instead). If the player continues as far as possible without Mosely, then when you get to the part where Mosely should shoot Dr. John, instead Dr. John will punch Grace to death and then strangle Gabriel.

Another way to make the game unwinnable is to enter Grace's room without having retrieved the costumes from room 7.

Regardless of what you may have learned from a popular "Let's Play" of this game, going to the swamp without leaving the message asking Dr. John to bring the Sekey Madoule does NOT make the game unwinnable. Although the LPer restored his game after doing this, I checked this for myself and you do not need to do that. The game leaves a confusing message if you do this, as the narrator says that they must not have brought the Sekey Madule to the ritual and Gabriel says "Oh great, now what?" In reality though, this just means the ceremony hasn't started yet. It doesn't start until after you've left the tracker in the coffin AND after you've left the message. So if you went to the swamp without leaving the message at the cemetery, and got this message from the narrator, just leave the swamp, go to the cemetery, leave the message, and the Sekey Madoule will be at the ritual when you return to the swamp. No need to restore the game.

Room 12 is an empty bedroom. There is no need to go there.

Listening to the Malia/Tetelo conversation gives you points, but is not required to beat the game.
11. Most of the ways for Gabriel to die in this game involve being killed by Tetelo.

Answer: False

Most of the ways for Gabriel to die in this game involve being killed by Dr. John, either directly or indirectly. Tetelo cannot kill Gabriel in this game until after Dr. John dies.
12. What item of his family line does Gabriel use to save Grace?

Answer: talisman

Gabriel rescues Grace with the talisman three times. First he uses it to wake her up from unconsciousness. Then he shows it to Tetelo when she is about to kill Grace. Lastly, after Tetelo demands the talisman, Gabriel throws it to Mosely and tells him to get Grace out of the hounfour and says that the talisman will protect them both (Grace has been knocked unconscious again by Dr. John at this point).
13. What is the source of Tetelo's power?

Answer: A stone idol

Once Gabriel gives the talisman to Mosely, Tetelo drags Gabriel to the center of the hounfour, right next to the stone idol. Gabriel knows that this is the source of her power, so he yanks it out of there and defeats Tetelo. What he does not know is that this will open a huge crack in the floor that leads to hell.

He also does not know that Malia planned on sacrificing herself to end her evil family's line.
14. If you get the bad ending, who stands on the balcony with Grace?

Answer: Detective Mosely

"Gabriel Knight" has an interesting similarity to a later game, "King's Quest 7". Not only do both games have two endings, one good one and one band one depending one whether or not the protagonist attempts to rescue his/her true love, but the ending that you get is decided on the final puzzle of the game.

In both games, there is one way to get the good ending and two ways to get the bad ending. In both games, one of those two ways is to do nothing. In both games, the other way is to use an item.

In "Gabriel Knight" the item is a dagger. If Gabriel uses the dagger on Malia or does nothing, Malia will throw a rope at Gabriel and drag her down to hell with her. Then, the ending will show Grace and Detective Mosely on the balcony, with Grace saddened by the loss of her friend and the tragic 300-year history of both families that ended with them killing each other off. Grace says she can't help but think it could have been different. Grace is right. If you click the take icon on Malia, you get a much better ending.
15. Who composed the soundtrack for this game?

Answer: Robert Holmes

Jane Jensen is the creator of this game, but not the creator of the soundtrack. Aubrey Hodges did the "Quest For Glory 4" soundtrack. Mark Seibert did soundtracks for many Sierra games.

It's tough to decide whose work is my all-time favorite between Robert Holmes and Aubrey Hodges. If I have made up my mind which one is my favorite by the time you play this quiz, I don't plan on ever letting you know.
