Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the connection between these four names?

Answer: They are the ghosts in "Pac-Man"

Namco's "Pac-Man" is a fairly straightforward arcade game in which you control the titular Pac-Man as he navigates a maze and chomps up pellets. A level is considered complete when all the pellets have been eaten. However, four ghosts also wander the maze in pursuit of Pac-Man, whose names are Blinky, Clyde, Inky and Pinky. All Pac-Man can do is avoid the ghosts, unless he chomps one of the Energizers in the maze, which temporarily allows him to eat the ghosts.
2. What is the connection between these four video game developers?

Answer: They've all developed "Spyro" games

The "Spyro" series is primarily focused on platforming and adventure, as Spyro and his dragonfly friend Sparx explore different realms in search of treasures and enemies.

Insomniac Games started the series and developed the first three games for the PlayStation between 1998 and 2000: "Spyro the Dragon", "Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage!" and "Spyro: Year of the Dragon". Check Six Games produced the PlayStation 2 and GameCube game "Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly" in 2002. Australian developer Krome Studios created the first two games in the "Legend of Spyro" trilogy between 2006 and 2007: "The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning" and "The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night". Étranges Libellules took on "The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon", the third game in the trilogy in 2008.
3. These four pictures represent animals that are protagonists in different video games by a specific developer. Which developer connects these four animals?

Answer: Rareware

The four pictured animals are a gorilla, a bear, a squirrel and a fox.

The gorilla represents Donkey Kong, the titular character in the "Donkey Kong Country" trilogy for the SNES. The bear represents Banjo, the heroic bear in the "Banjo-Kazooie" series. The squirrel represents Conker, the protagonist of Rareware's cult classic "Conker's Bad Fur Day". The fox represents Fox McCloud, the lead character in "Star Fox Adventures" for the GameCube. Prior to being purchased by Microsoft, Rareware was one of Nintendo's most popular developers.
4. These four pictures represent items contained in the subtitles of video games from a specific series. Which series connects these four images?

Answer: The Legend of Zelda

The four pictured items are a sword, an hourglass, a mask and an ocarina.

The Wii's "Skyward Sword", within the series' chronology, is set earlier than most of the other games, before the ever-present antagonist Ganon/Ganondorf even came about. "Phantom Hourglass" is the first game in the series for the Nintendo DS and is a direct sequel to "The Wind Waker". "Majora's Mask" is the second "Zelda" game to feature on the Nintendo 64 and considerably darker in tone than its highly-acclaimed predecessor "Ocarina of Time".
5. What comes fourth in this sequence?

Answer: IV: Caribbean

This connection here is that these are the primary settings for the main, numbered entries in the "Assassin's Creed" series.

"Assassin's Creed", although not numbered with a Roman numeral, was set primarily in the Holy Land of the Middle East during the Third Crusade. "Assassin's Creed II" was set in various cities across Italy, including Florence and Venice, during the Italian Renaissance. "Assassin's Creed III" was set in America during the Revolutionary War. The fourth in the sequence would therefore be 'IV: Caribbean', referring to the seafaring "Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag" which was set primarily in the Caribbean during the Golden Age of Piracy.
6. What word comes fourth in this sequence?

Answer: Black

These are the first words in the subtitles to games in the "Call of Duty" series of first-person shooters in order of release.

'Modern' refers to "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare". 'World' refers to "Call of Duty: World at War". The second 'Modern' refers to "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2". The next main entry in the series is "Call of Duty: Black Ops", so the fourth word in the sequence would be 'Black'.

If you were to continue this sequence further, you would have 'Modern' again (for "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3") and 'Black' again (for "Call of Duty: Black Ops II").
7. These picture clues represent names of video games and form a sequence. What would be fourth in the sequence?

Answer: Platinum

The connection between these pictures is that they represent the titles of enhanced remakes in the "Pokemon" series in order of generation.

"Yellow" was an enhanced remake of "Red" and "Blue" in Generation 1. "Crystal" was an enhanced remake of "Gold" and "Silver" in Generation 2. "Emerald" was an enhanced remake of "Ruby" and "Sapphire" in Generation 3. If you carry on this pattern, the fourth in the sequence would be "Platinum", the enhanced remake of "Diamond" and "Pearl" in Generation IV.

Generation V broke this trend of enhanced remakes. Instead, it marked the first time that a pair of games had direct sequels, namely "Black" and "White" which spawned "Black 2" and "White 2". Generation V also didn't feature any remakes of previous games, either. This trend was restarted again, though, in Generation VI with "Omega Ruby" and "Alpha Sapphire", remakes of the Generation III games.
8. These picture clues represent specific sets of things in a video game series. What would you expect to see fourth in the sequence?

Answer: A crown

The connection between these pictures is that they represent cups in the "Mario Kart" series: Mushroom Cup, Flower Cup and Star Cup. While the fourth in the sequence would be the Special Cup, it is represented by a crown (though it has also been represented by a letter S in a couple of games).

From "Mario Kart DS" onwards, these four cups have been collectively referred to as the Nitro cups. The Retro cups, consisting of remade courses from previous games, are the Shell Cup, the Banana Cup, the Leaf Cup and the Lightning Cup.
9. These three video games have each had their vowels removed and the consonants squashed up. If you can work out what each one is, you can answer this: which series connects these three games? (Spaces in the clues are not necessarily indicative of multiple words, nor do they necessarily indicate where a word ends or begins.)

Answer: The Elder Scrolls

The three games in question are "Arena", "Oblivion" and "Morrowind", meaning the series that connects them all is, of course, "The Elder Scrolls".

Games in "The Elder Scrolls" are open-world RPGs. "The Elder Scrolls: Arena" was the very first game in the series, released in 1994 for the PC. It was "The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind" that really made the series' popularity skyrocket in 2002. "The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion" followed in 2006 and "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim" in 2011. The series then made the leap to MMORPG territory with 2014's "The Elder Scrolls Online".
10. These three items have each had their vowels removed and the consonants squashed up. If you can work out what each one is, you can answer this: which organisation connects these three items? (Spaces in the clues are not necessarily indicative of multiple words, nor do they necessarily indicate where a word ends or begins.)

Answer: Nintendo

The three items, or perhaps consoles, are Wii (Wii U also fits), GameCube and Game Boy Advance. The organisation that connects them is, therefore, Nintendo.

The Wii marked Nintendo's entry into the seventh generation of gaming in 2006, alongside Sony's PlayStation 3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360. Its unique motion control scheme and focus on casual gaming meant it was a global success. 2001 saw the arrival of the GameCube, but didn't sell as well as both its successor, the Wii, or its own predecessor, the Nintendo 64. The Game Boy Advance was also released in 2001 to replace the Game Boy Color.
