Sara Ahmed is an Egyptian weightlifter who had won several African championships and two titles at the World Championships in 2022 and 2023 in the 76kg category. At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, she won a bronze medal in the 69kg category, becoming the first Arab woman to win an Olympic weightlifting medal and the first Egyptian woman to stand on the Olympic podium in any event.
At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, she competed in the women's 81kg weightlifting event. She lifted a total of 268 kg - 117 kg in the snatch and 151 kg in the clean and jerk - to win the silver medal. Gold went to Norway's Solfrid Koanda, who lifted a total of 275 kg.
2. Cheick Sallah Cisse (CIV)
Cheick Sallah Cissé, born in 1993, is an Ivorian taekwondo practitioner who shot to international fame when he won Côte d'Ivoire's first ever Olympic gold medal in the men's 80kg category at the 2016 Rio Games. His dramatic victory came with a last-second head-kick.
He's also a multiple African champion and a regular at the World Taekwondo Championships. At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, he competed in the men's 80kg taekwondo category. He lost a tight semi-final to Great Britain's Caden Cunningham.
He then won another tight bout to secure a bronze medal against Mexico's Carlos Sansores.
3. Tatjana Smith (RSA)
Tatjana Smith (née Schoemaker), a South African swimmer, won three gold medals at the 2015 African Games, two gold medals at the Commonwealth Games, a World Championship, and a gold medal at Tokyo 2020. She has set several Olympic and world records during her career.
At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, she competed in the 200m and 100m breaststroke. In the 200m breaststroke, she set a new world record of 2:18.95 in the final to win an undisputed gold medal. In the 100m she finished second behind Lydia Jacoby (USA).
These two medals made her the most decorated South African Olympian in history.
4. Daniel Varela de Pina (CPV)
David de Pina, born in Santa Cruz in 1996, is a flyweight boxer from Cape Verde. He started boxing in 2002 and later moved to Portugal to train at Privilégio BC in Lisbon. In 2022, he won a bronze medal at the African Championships in Maputo and competed at the World Championships in Tashkent in 2023.
At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, he was one of the Cape Verde flag bearers at the opening ceremony. Competing in the men's flyweight division (51kg), he defeated Thitisan Panmod (Thailand) and Patrick Chinyemba (Zambia) before losing to Hasanboy Doʻsmatov (Uzbekistan) in the semi-finals.
His bronze medal was Cape Verde's first ever Olympic medal.
5. Achraf Hakimi (MAR)
Achraf Hakimi is a footballer born in Madrid in 1998 to Moroccan parents. He developed through Real Madrid's youth system before making his senior debut in 2017. He went on to play for Borussia Dortmund and Inter Milan, winning league titles with both clubs. In 2021, he joined Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), where he established himself as one of the best attacking full-backs in the world. On the international stage, he was a key figure in Morocco's historic run to the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the first African nation to reach that stage.
He represented Morocco in the men's football tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. As one of the team's senior players, he played a crucial role in defence and attack. Morocco progressed from the group stage after beating Argentina and Iraq, losing only to Ukraine. In the quarter-finals, the Moroccans beat the USA 4-0 before losing 2-1 to Spain in the semi-finals. The bronze medal match was an easy 6-0 victory over Egypt.
6. Kaylia Nemour (ALG)
Born in France in 2004, Kaylia Nemour is an Algerian gymnast. At the 2023 African Championships in Pretoria, she won a gold medal in the individual all-around competition and a bronze medal in the team event. In the same year, she won a silver medal on the uneven bars at the World Championships.
At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, she competed in the women's all-around and apparatus finals. She won the gold medal on uneven bars with a total of 15.700 points, ahead of Qiu Qiyuan of China and Sunisa Lee of the USA.
7. Beatrice Chebet (KEN)
Beatrice Chebet, born in 2000, is a Kenyan long-distance runner. She won gold in the 5,000m at the 2018 World U20 Championships. In 2022, she won silver in the 5,000m at the World Championships, and in 2023 she won two gold medals at the World Cross Country Championships.
She also won a 5,000m bronze medal at the 2023 World Championshipst and two more gold medals at the 2023 World Cross Country Championships. At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, she competed in both the 5,000m and 10,000m and won gold in both events.
She won the 5000m in 14:28.56, beating compatriot Faith Kipyegon. She won the 10,000m in 30:43.25, just ahead of Italy's Nadia Battocletti and Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands.
8. Fares Ferjani (TUN)
Born in Tunis in 1997, Farès Ferjani is a sabre fencer. He won gold medals at the 2019 African Games in the individual event and in the team event at the 2024 African Championships. At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, he competed in the men's individual sabre event.
He progressed through the early rounds with strong performances against Gu Bon-gil (South Korea), Csanád Gémesi (Hungary) and Shen Chenpeng (China). He defeated Ziad El-Sissy of Egypt in the semi-finals to reach the final, where he lost 15-11 to Oh Sang-uk of South Korea.
9. Ahmed El-Gendy (EGY)
Ahmed El-Gendy, born in Cairo in 2000, is an Egyptian modern pentathlete. At the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, he made history by winning the silver medal, becoming the first African and Arab athlete to win an Olympic medal in the modern pentathlon. In 2023, he won gold in the team event at the World Championships.
At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, he competed in the men's modern pentathlon. He won the gold medal with a world record total score of 1555 points in swimming, fencing, riding and the laser running.
10. Alan Hatherly (RSA)
Alan Hatherly is a South African mountain bike racer. He gained international recognition after winning a gold medal at the 2018 Under-23 World Cross Country Championships. He had also won gold medals at the 2019 and 2024 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in the electric MTB cross-country and Olympic cross-country events respectively.
At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, he competed in the men's mountain bike cross-country event. He finished third in a highly competitive field. He finished the race in 1:26.33, just 11 seconds behind the winner, Tom Pidock (Great Britain).
