Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What caused the explosion at the Chinatown First National Bank?

Answer: An acetylene tank

Mac and Stella were called to a bank in Chinatown in this episode where a man emerged from the bank on fire. A hole was blasted through the wall to the safety deposit box, and when the security guards tried to stop them, they accidentally shot an acetylene tank and set the men on fire. One of the guards was pronounced dead at the hospital, and the two men in the room (who were wearing plastic masks) were killed by the burns.

There was a trail of blood to the back door, so one of the men in the room escaped. According to an employee at the bank, the sprinkler systems aren't hooked up, and the fire alarms aren't connected to the fire department. Everything is just for show since the bank is relatively new. Flack ends up collecting one of the security guard's guns for examination.
2. What was used to line the walls of the bank vault?

Answer: Stainless steel

While examining the room, Danny checks out the hole in the wall that the robbers entered through and noticed how thin the metal on the wall was. Evidently, the owners simply lined the walls with stainless steel in order to give the illusion of security. Before the bank was created in the building, it used to be a shoe store, so the owners simply attempted to build a makeshift bank.

When the CSIs reconstruct the scene, they figure that the robbers made the hole and entered the vault at 8:30, the guard heard a noise, investigated, and shot the acetylene tank by accident.
3. Which is not a safety deposit box that was opened during the robbery?

Answer: 32

Other than 12, 14, and 45, the robbers also opened 18, 28, 38, and 58. Mac figures that this is because the number 8 is a number that brings good luck in China. The robbers had to have figured that these would contain the most valuables since customers would use those the most.

The man responsible for leasing the store behind the bank said that the owner no longer wanted it, so he kept the 'For Lease' signs out. This explains how the robbers entered through the store to the back of the building. Mac finds a hole in a door, and when he checks a dumpster in an alley he finds an umbrella without its covering.

He figures that this is how they entered the door.
4. What type of animal was the jade figurine shaped as?

Answer: Monkey

The Jade Monkey was in one of the burn victims' hand during the explosion, and when he was burnt it left an impression that the CSIs were able to identify. This jade monkey along with two charms (one saying 'prosperity' and the other saying 'love' in Chinese symbols) were found at the crime scene, and although they weren't worth as much as what was in the vaults, the robbers tried to take them.

There was also a clasp found with a print on it, which turned out to be from one of the employees. The CSIs managed to identify the one victim who ran out of the bank on fire, but the one from the explosion was beyond recognition and nothing on him could be salvaged.
5. What is the name of Joanne Cho's daughter?

Answer: Doris

When her fingerprint is found on the clasp found at the bank, the CSIs bring Joanne Cho in for an interrogation. They show her the beads and jade monkey, and Mac realizes that the monkey was probably given to Joanne's 11-month old daughter, who was born on the year of the monkey. Joanne confesses that the clasp is hers, and she tells them that her daughter was kidnapped from her.

The kidnappers left her a ransom note telling her to call a phone (which Flack discovered was in Madison Square Garden).
6. What is sodium polacrylate commonly found in?

Answer: Diapers

Using one of the masks, Aiden is able to figure out whose face fits the mold. The man, Luther Willet, is on parole, and lived in five cell blocks over the course of his time in prison. He suggests that he probably knew them during his stay, but he couldn't say who it was.
Meanwhile, Stella finds material on the baby clothing left at Joanne Cho's apartment. The compound, Sodium Polyacrylate, is commonly found in diapers, but when Stella checks if they match, they're different. It turns out that the material is from fake snow.
When Mac runs a search on the fonts used on the ransom note, he comes up with three matches. One of these is 'Playbill', which revolves around theater productions. When they arrive at one of New York's only winter-based shows (which closed a month and a half earlier), they find the third robber dead on the stage, and bloody baby handprints trailing away from the body.
7. How many bullet holes did Danny find at the crime scene in the bank?

Answer: Five

Stella and Mac search the theater and find cocaine in the victim's pocket as well as the letter X that was missing from the ransom note sent to Joanne Cho. The letter was luckily from the inside cover of the 'Playbill' magazine and included part of a zip code. Flack tells Stella and Mac that the third robber was named Kevin Moretti and that he was in prison with Luther Willet. Meanwhile, Danny investigates the bank, and using lasers, he lines up the bullet holes in the walls. One doesn't make sense though.

The bullet that Mac took out of the wall doesn't line up with the shot fired from the security guard's gun since it would have needed to turn left.
8. What substance is not found in Kevin Moretti's (the third victim's) lungs?

Answer: Sulfur

Kevin escaped the bank crime scene with a shot to the neck and ended up returning to the theater. This shot hit him in the carotid artery, and had he not run away, he would have survived. When Hawkes checks his lungs, he finds lead, mercury, and glass fibres, which would have come from working at Ground Zero at the World Trade Center. Meanwhile, Mac checks the cocaine packet found on Kevin Moretti's body and finds the shape of a dragon on the side.

This symbol is used by a gang in New York City.
9. How much money was mentioned in the second ransom note received by Joanne Cho?

Answer: $200,000

Mac and Stella investigate the second ransom note and find that it was written by the same person that leased the building next to the bank. There was also residue on the top of the page showing that it came from a note pad. When they look closer, they find indentations of Chinese lettering on it.

These spell out the name 'Nina Chang'. They search the name and find that a Nina Chang worked for the theater as a make-up artist and when they finally narrowed it down to the correct Nina Chang (using the zip code and the dragon belonging to a gang in Lower Manhattan), they went to her apartment. Meanwhile, Joanne Cho finally decides to give in for the ransom money. Stella and Flack wait outside near the newspaper stand specified in the note and the kidnapper goes to get the money, but a bunch of cop cars show up, and the robber leaves without the money.

They leave the mask, and luckily, Stella gets his fingerprints from the newspaper stand.
10. Who is found guilty of kidnapping Joanne Cho's baby?

Answer: Marvin Hummel

Danny attempted to figure out how the fifth shot didn't line up at the bank crime scene, and he discovered that the shot was intended to miss the robbers. Flack and Danny interrogate him and he tells the truth. Tony, the dead security guard, realized that Marvin was with the robbers when he shot away from them, so he accidentally ignited the acetylene tank and caused the explosion.

In the end, Marvin is put behind bars, and Joanne gets her baby back.
