Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Right out of the gate, the very first enemy to appear upon arrival is a mini boss. It can easily be avoided, but it can just as easily cause the player a lot of trouble if they fail or decide not to sneak past it. What enemy is this?

Answer: Ogre

Ogres are nasty monsters that do not stagger, have large health bars and do a lot of damage. They're notably weak to Fire, but the player won't have acquired many means of exploiting this weakness this early in the game. For that reason, it's usually best to sneak past this Ogre, which is fortunately quite easy.
2. Before reaching our first bonfire, there is an opportunity to meet the game's first quest related NPC in this area. Who is it?

Answer: Cartographer Cale

Cartographer Cale will give the player the House Key, a key needed to open the locked mansion back in Majula. Exploring this mansion will eventually give the player an Estus Flask Shard and a Human Effigy.
3. Easily the area's most important bonfire is positioned next to a helpful NPC merchant as well as a ladder leading down to a boss fight and a shortcut leading to another boss fight. What bonfire is this?

Answer: Cardinal Tower

The Cardinal Tower is where the player will find themselves returning to several times or perhaps more. It is simply positioned in a very convenient place to properly explore the entire map at.
4. Merchant Hag Melentia is arguably the most important NPC in the entire game, found right in the middle of the Forest of Fallen Giants. Conveniently, she will join the player in Majula eventually, but only after they've accomplished something notable. What must the player do to prompt Melentia to go to Majula?

Answer: Defeat The Last Giant

By defeating The Last Giant and then exhausting Melentia's dialogue, she will tell the player that she will see them at Majula. Though optional, the player can earn the Covetous Silver Serpent Ring +1 by spending 10,000 souls at her shop, and then talking to her.
5. Positioned next to a tall elevator is a very wide, open and rocky platform where two Flame Salamanders rest. There is a lot of powerful loot to be had surrounding them, as well as inside a cave more of them reside in. However, the player will require a specific ring in order to explore this area. What ring is needed here?

Answer: Silver Cat Ring

Without the Silver Cat Ring, the player cannot survive the fall down to the platform the Salamanders are. With the Silver Cat Ring, they will still take an enormous amount of damage from this fall, so keeping close to full health will be needed. Even then, they'll be immediately attacked by these powerful enemies once they land, so they'll either need to kill them with projectiles before making the jump, or be prepared to very quickly heal as to be able to fight the salamanders up close without immediately dying.
6. The cave of Flame Salamanders is arguably the most dangerous part of this entire map. Nothing ventured, nothing gained however, as there is some high quality loot to be had for the adventurous. Which of the following is one item that can be looted here?

Answer: Rebel Greatshield

The Rebel Greatshield has the second highest total absorptions out of any greatshield in the entire game. It is dwarfed by the Havel's Greatshield, but it requires a minuscule amount of Strength in comparison and is much, much lighter. It's only deficiency is it's below average physical absorption, sitting at a really bad 70%.

This does grow to 80% when maxed at +10 and, combined with its extremely high elemental absorptions, still makes it very much worth using.
7. Walking up a large tree branch, turning around and walking straight sees the player looking at and eventually walking past the Cardinal Tower. There is a very convenient shortcut to be made here, that will allow the player to skip the aforementioned tree branch entirely to return to this very same place. It just requires the use of a specific element to open the shortcut. What element is this?

Answer: Fire

Leaning on a wall of the Cardinal Tower is a small pile of barrels. There barrels have highly flammable material inside them, and will explode if hit by Fire. This explosion will blast a hole right into the Cardinal Tower on the very same floor as the bonfire, making it very easy and quick to return to this place later. Fire can be found easily by purchasing a Fire Bomb from Merchant Hag Melentia or luring a nearby hollow into throwing a Fire Bomb at your position when standing near the barrels- just make sure to get out of the way once the bomb is thrown, so you don't get caught in the blast!
8. The area's first boss tends to be most players' first boss for their entire playthrough. It has an intro cutscene. Who is it?

Answer: The Last Giant

The cutscene depicts the giant as angrily rising to its feet, agitated over the player arriving to the area. This is overall a very simple fight, as the giant has a very small moveset involving slow moves with large auditory telegraphs that are straightforward to dodge. Combine this with a meagre healthpool of 2,530 and this is a fitting first boss fight for a player's playthrough.
9. The area's first boss can be tackled alone, or through the use of summons. This particular fight offers two potential NPC summons. Who is one of them?

Answer: Sellsword Luet

Luet wields two greatshields and has the Red Eye Ring equipped, which will cause The Last Giant to mainly attack him unless the player also has such a ring equipped.
10. Mild-Mannered Pate is a possible NPC summon for the area's first boss. However, he doesn't leave his summon sign until the player acquires a specific item from him. What item is this?

Answer: White Sign Soapstone

The White Sign Soapstone is needed to allow indefinite access into another player's world as a cooperator. Appearing as a Shade through the use of the Small White Sign Soapstone will only allow the player to briefly appear as a cooperator in someone else's world. This is achieved by simply entering and escaping Pate's trap.
11. Despite this being the first area of the game, a Titanite Slab can be found here. It will require the player to acquire a Key Item to access, however. What item is this?

Answer: Pharros Lockstone

The player should head to, and eventually clear, a small room with multiple ballistae positioned. Once this is done, there is a small ladder behind the ballistae for the player to climb down where the Pharros Lockstone can be used. Using it and then destroying the illusory wall will reveal two treasure chests, one of which containing a Titanite Slab.
12. The area's second boss is unique in how it can be approached. Even up to 2023, this is a concept no other game in the franchise would replicate. Which of the following is true about The Pursuer?

Answer: He can be defeated outside his boss room

Right next to the Cardinal Tower shortcut is a large platform where a hollow will be standing guard, throwing Firebombs if the player gets close. If the player goes to the top of this platform, The Pursuer will appear to fight them. If defeated here, his boss room will later be empty, and the player will be rewarded with typical loot for defeating him.

They've only got one chance at this, however, as if they flee or are defeated by The Pursuer, he will not return here and will need to be fought in his boss room.
13. As luck would have it, the player will need to return to this area towards the end of the game, as a mandatory boss fight takes place that they can't access until this stage of their playthrough. What item will they need to access the Giant Lord fight?

Answer: King's Ring

There is a locked door guarded by a Shan Knight. This door can only be opened if the player equips the King's Ring. This ring can only be found by completing the Undead Crypt, a late game area, and picking it up after the boss room for Velstadt, the Royal Aegis.
14. Right in front of the Soldier Key door leading to The Pursuer's boss room is a tall statue of a sword, poking out a window towards the sunset with an item drop right at the statue's tip. Clearly, this is a trap, so it shouldn't surprise you when something attacks you when you go to get the item. What enemy shows up here?

Answer: A group of hollows

Fortunately, this simple group of hollows can be easily dispatched. Sometimes, they don't even need the player to do it for them, as they'll eagerly fall off the side of the statue as they bumble about trying to reach the player.
15. A powerful quality weapon can be found in the King's Gate room, as simple loot idly laying against a wall the player can freely grab. What weapon is this?

Answer: Grand Lance

A personal favorite of mine, the Grand Lance requires 22 Strength and 18 Dexterity. This typically means an early game player won't get the stats to use this weapon just yet, but they should definitely hold onto it for later, as the weapon is exceptionally strong in the early game.
16. The Last Giant's soul can be used to acquire a powerful Strength scaling weapon for end game. What weapon is this?

Answer: Giant Stone Axe

The Giant Stone Axe requires a high 45 in Strength, but packs beneficial qualities that can make this worth meeting. For one, it has very strong scaling in Strength with an A scaling. For another, at +5, it's base 400 power makes it competitive with other colossal weapons, and it's solid moveset for its weapon class makes it a strong all around choice for a weapon.
17. The Pursuer's soul can be turned into either his sword or his shield. The Pursuer's Ultra Greatsword is unique amongst its class for one thing it only shares in common with the Fume Ultra Greatsword. What is this?

Answer: High Dexterity scaling

At +5, this weapon gets an A in Strength but also a C in Dexterity. Only the Fume Ultra Greatsword makes this mark as well, making The Pursuer's Ultra Greatsword one of the best weapons in the game, and arguably the single best early game, for quality builds.
18. The Pursuer's Greatshield is an excellent greatshield, but with one odd quirk about it: the description on the item is misleading. Which of the following is not true about this shield?

Answer: It resists Curse

Despite the item description clearly stating that this shield 'offers a resistance to curse', it unfortunately does not offer any resistance to Curse whatsoever. It is likely that this description was written without considering context. Since The Pursuer was designed to hunt down those branded by 'the curse', the description suggesting the shield resists curse was likely depicting The Pursuer himself resisting the curse by killing those who have it, not by The Pursuer himself actually being able to resist being cursed.
19. Defeating the Giant Lord and taking his soul to Straid of Olaphis grants the ability to unlock a unique Hex. What Hex is this?

Answer: Repel

Repel prevents any units very close to the caster from taking or dealing any damage at all for a couple seconds. This could be useful if you're very bad at dodging one particular attack you can't afford to be hit by, but is otherwise a novelty tool for limited use in PvP.
20. If the player wants to fight The Last Giant and The Pursuer again, a Bonfire Ascetic would ordinarily be needed. Can it be used here to respawn them?

Answer: Yes

Thankfully, only one Bonfire Ascetic is needed to cover both bosses. By playing it at the Cardinal Tower, both bosses can be fought once again.
